Uncanny X-Men #3 - Avengers vs. Uncanny X-Men Go! Review

4

It's time for Cyclops' X-Men to face off against the Avengers. Think you know how this issue plays out? Think again.

The Good

The first couple issues have given us different feels for what to expect in this series. The first gave us an outside view on Cyclops' team and the 'revolution' he's trying to start. The second showed us a little more of the team but still didn't quite give us an idea where this was all going. This issue changes things.

In the confrontation between Cyclops and Captain America, we get to find out more on how the two feel about the state of things since their last encounter in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN. Cyclops makes a compelling argument but it's hard to completely buy into everything he's saying as parts of it are a little too extreme. That's what makes this X-Men title different from the other ones.

This isn't the X-Men in the traditional sense. We've seen the team on the outs with the authorities but never quite at this level. As fugitives, it's a completely different game and you'll find yourself torn as to whether or not you agree with Cyclops' philosophy. The story elevates to an intense level as you're not sure who's going to make the first move while at the same time, we have that typical and refreshing Brian Michael Bendis' humor thrown right in the middle of it all.

Bendis also takes a little time to allow us to get to know one of the new mutants. In a single opening page, we find out a great deal. This tiny flashback humanizes the character and we no longer have just another random new character with powers. And of course there's more on the 'traitor.' Have we seen all there is to see?

I enjoy Chris Bachalo's art more and more each time I see it. There are some really great scenes as the intensity builds and by switching the perspective, it adds to the feel of the story. Bachalo is also doing the colors here. There were a few panels with plane/empty backgrounds but the way the color meshed with scenes, it added a really nice feel to the vibe of the art.

The Bad

I've enjoyed the first two issues but this one really stood out. The combination of the suspense, action, humor and twists easily made this one of my favorite comics this week. There is still a feeling that something big is about to happen. This was a great issue but I feel we're still building towards something even bigger.

The Verdict

I've been enjoying this series quite a bit but this one really cranked up the excitement. Just as Bendis' ALL-NEW X-MEN has that sense of unknown because it's hard to say how long the characters from the past can stay in the future, this one also leaves you wondering how long can Cyclops operate with his new extreme way of thinking. The argument he makes gets you thinking and it's really hard to determine if he's right or not. Chris Bachalo's art is fun to see and the way he lays out each scene really adds to the feel of the story. With a final scene that will make you stare at Cyclops in awe, Bendis is taking it to the next level. For those that wondered if he could do the X-Men justice needn't worry any longer. Bendis is completely shaking up the X-Men Universe and it's become an exciting time to read X-Men comics once again.

I liked this issue a lot gave it 5/5. Really picked up and the end was somthing very big!

There's still a feeling something big is about to happen? No. Something big IS about to happen based on that last page. It's gonna be on soon.

5/5 for me here.

I loved the art and the dialogues. The issue solved the only concern I had in the previous 2 issues about "you-know-what-not-being-really-possible-in-character-unless-being-just-acting", and I like how Emma and Scott still have good dynamic... in fact it seems like they still act as a couple to me, I hope they continue being a couple, I love them together.

There were many "in your face" points thrown at the Avengers too (and Clint trying to not hear anything of that and just wanting to start a fight attending to no reason was irritating me). I liked the humor too, like the "time out" scene and the joke made by Illyana near the end, and when Cyclops had 2 panels to show a smile I though for a moment they were going to the Avengers Tower to do that xD.

Tempus, as expected, is a very powerful mutant, I though last issue that she was going to be a big part of why the Avengers heavy hitters weren't going to slaughter a bunch of rookie mutants and their semi-depowered teachers.

Last pannel is interesting, I wonder who they will take with them... I hope many, if not all, students from Kyle and Yost time with the academy-x, specially Hellion and Mercury, my 2 favorites from them.

"To me my X-Men" was always in my heart a far more iconic phrase than the repetitive "Avengers assemble", I liked seeing it again here :)

PS: As much as I'm liking Scott's new costume, and I even plan to cosplay as it, I can't explain to myself how it "works". I can figure more or less where are his eyes place (though depending on the artist they are on the upper part of the X or on the lower part), but... how can he shoot with that? We know his visor opened, either by pressing a button or with a sensor obeying a mind impulse. Even his Age of X Basilisk Costume opened... but this one never seem to open when it shoots. I wonder if it's some kind of special lens that change refraction angle like some special sunglasses.

That would be great

I concur with the earlier question; not to fixate on numbers, but what precisely cost this issue a star? I honestly couldn't think of anything I didn't love about it.

Anyhow, I love Eva. I want her to become a big thing. I just hope they don't jump the shark with her powers too much because then everyone will just want to see her killed off.

Is this what you were talking about on twitter? If it is, shame on you for not giving it 5 lol nah 4 pretty much sums it up, that last page though, "To me, my X-men."

Scott's gotta have some chrome-platted balls to use that phrase.

It really didn't sit well with me how AvX turned out, with Cyclops being demonized and made out to be the new Magneto. I loved the previous Uncanny X-Men concept, with Utopia and the Extinction Team, and mutants telling the rest of the world "we've had enough of your crap". So to then see Marvel's writers put all that blame on Scott Summers, and to see Captain America and Iron Man looking like hypocrites who were shirking their responsibility for the situation... it's a huge relief to see this series showing the other side of the argument as legitimate.

The only thing I don't like is Cyclops's new visor. How can he see? There have been times when the lines of the X are drawn so that his eyes can see through them, but most of the time it makes no sense.

I bet that's what lost this issue a star :P

Nah, if you look at the previous issues, "new hellions" seems to have more to do with the evil mutant school the HF Club has started using Sauron, Mystique and Wendigo as teachers.

Sh*t is going down.

Awesome issue, 5/5. And the funny bits were perfect, it's nice to see that the team still maintains a little sense of humor and this books isn't just dark and edgy.

Eva owning the Avengers was just awesome. Way to humiliate them in front of Global TV.

Posted by JohnnyGat

This is the first issue that I felt Bachalo's art fit the tone. Despite being faced with the Avengers the injection of humor was quite interesting way of handling this especially the way the students are reacting.

Posted by Fenderxx

I was laughing so hard, when Hawkeye was about to shot Cyclops in the face "he put on X on his face for me!" I wanted him to do it so bad, but overall great book !

Posted by Ramier

In my honest opinion this book was great, I think the suspense from issue #2 put unbelievable pressure on this issue. And oh did this issue delivery, i really didn't expect the outcome i thought it was totally going to be a brawlfest. I can't believe i'm saying this but i'm enjoying Bachalo artwork, it was just flat out good this week. BMB has been writing this X books beautifully, he's one of the few marvel writers who takes into account the other books and knows what is going on in the whole universe. as far as the rating gave this issue i have to disagree as well this is a 5/5, but i think with the star rating people can take the rating out of hand. When i see a 4 star rating i automatically think 80% but in there brains it could be 85% or 90% it not being 100% you gotta give it a 4star. I think you guys should switch to point numbering system because the 4star looks so bad on this great issue i rather see a 9/10 or even 8.5/10. ANYWAY i think im getting off topic, BUT THIS F'IN BOOK

Posted by thenexusrebound

Of the new mutants on Scott's team I only like Eva. The little flashback gave her even more humanizing which I loved. I have never liked Cyclops and him going all martyr kinda makes you want to punch him in the face more. I do have to admit though he has some adamantium plated stones to walk into the Jean Grey School like he owns the place. I wonder how the fall out will effect the original X-men if this turns into a brawl.

Great issue. Loved nearly everything about it. Let the haters hate. They're the same cynical, nitpicky bunch that's going to complain no matter what.

Bachalo's art isn't bad, it's just that for most themes it just doesn't fit. I thought his art in this issue felt much less aversive because there was a lot of humor which fits Bachalo's more toony style. His art is fine as long as it fits with the theme of an issue and any other issue of Uncanny with Bachalo I wouldn't mind criticizing but as it stands the way this issue played out made Bachalo's art okay and not terrible.

Not the best comic ever, but definitely better than issues 1 and 2. Thanks to this issue, I'm keeping this on my pull list.

He already used it in Astonishing X-Men 23, a fantastic issue. Though in that context, he used it because he was the leader of the X-Men and had eclipsed Xavier. He was a shining moment for the character.

Not surprising that the f*cking incompetent Bendis has corrupted it.

I haven't been a huge fan of Marvel in the last couple years, mainly because of the saturation of Wolverine in every flipping book. However, this series is making me fall back in love with the mutants again. Every core member of this team is just pure awesome, but no one shines quite like Magneto! This and Snyder's Batman are my first two reads every month and I don't see that changing any time soon.

Posted by G_Money_Christmas

5/5. This is my favorite one yet. I love everything about it and I completely agree with Cyclops. I never liked him during the cartoons when I was young or even the movies because i always thought he was too much of a good two-shoes. My opinion of him has completely changed and now he is my favorite X-Man. The only thing i don't like is the way Chris draws noses. The left nostril is always huge and it just looks really funny to me.

This was a lot of fun: to be honest I wasn't that impressed with the first issue of this new Uncanny run, but the last two have lifted it to be a book I look forward to -- especially if we see more interactions with the other X-folk in the Marvel U.

I'd like to see Cyclops articulate more clearly what these new X-Men are all about: standing up for mutants is obvious but too broad. Has he entirely given up on Xavier's goal of integration? Is he aiming for a Genosha-like mutant state? Obviously this new team is still finding its footing, but sooner or later they're going to have to get a more clearly defined purpose.

Thought it was interesting that despite his protestations of "the Phoenix made us do it!" he actually tried to defend what he did with his godly powers... this needs to be explored more.

But this is a good book. The X-series are really thriving from the shot in the arm provided by this and All-New.

And anyone want to bet that Tony Stark now has some time-manipulation-prevention device in his armor? Eva's clearly the stand out of the new kids, hope she can refine her power into something more than bubbles...

Oh yes, I suppose Legacy is unlike many comics Marvel spits out, but I rather enjoy it! I like that it takes more than 10 minutes to read, is $2.99, has a great voice, dedicated writer, and it's always good for a few laughs. Like I said, a reviewer and critique should always have clarity and unbiased for what he or she likes.

It's a shame that he is personal likes are too obvious for us and it shows in these reviews of his. X-Men titles never getting 5, but read the comments and you can see he is the only one who thinks it shouldn't be 5 stars, while Avengers gets 5 stars but if you read the comments, no one is impressed with that title.

Exactly.

Picking and choosing things to review isn't even reviewing, it's just pointing out reasons why you liked something that you knew you were going to like.

Can you imagine if Roger Ebert only reviewed films by Martin Scorsese? It's the same thing.
