Uncanny X-Men #2 - Poink Is the New Bamf

4

We finally get to see Cyclops setting up his new X-Men school

The Good

The first issue gave an interesting outside look at Cyclops' new team and direction for the X-Men. It established the fact that these weren't the X-Men we were used to. They definitely weren't going to be seen as heroes, especially with Cyclops being seen as a terrorist trying to start a 'revolution.'

The focus shifts in the second issue as we get a direct look at the characters. More importantly, we find out what's up between Emma Frost and Cyclops. As mentioned in the first issue, those affected by the Phoenix Force in AVENGERS VS. X-MEN have discovered their powers are no longer working the way they used to. This puts the former powerful X-Men in a different position. The lack of knowing exactly where their power levels stand adds an element of mystery and suspense to characters we're already familiar with. The addition of new characters also bridges the gap between old and new.

What may be most alarming is seeing Emma in a moment of vulnerability. She's always been a character full of pride and the unstable nature of her power along with her standing with Scott allows us to see her in a new light. The new mutants also serve the purpose of the everyman. We get a mix of reactions to suddenly gaining new powers as well as being recruited to this team of X-Men. Too often in the past, the mutants were simply brought on and that was the end of the introduction. It's a life changing move and it's great to see the reaction explored once again. Seeing a brief layout of Cyclops' school was also a treat that reminds you of the old annuals where we'd see these sort of diagrams.

Despite not having a lot of actual action, it's a great set up for the direction of the series. Chris Bachalo's art works and the subtle differences from panel to panel make scenes of conversation great. The reactions of the new recruits is great as well.

The Bad

We're getting a great set up in these first two issues but it almost feels like we're still in a holding pattern waiting for something to happen. It's important to see how this team will operate and what the new mutants think of their situation. The tease of a traitor has been revealed but we're still not quite sure if we can trust the motive already given.

The new mutants and their mixed reactions is great but they're not too likable at this point. One is (I'll avoid mention his possible new codename) but maybe we just need to see more of the others to care about them in this series.

There is a set up for a big clash at the end. There's some confusion as to how they arrived at the location so quickly. We know the X-Men teleported here but how did the others arrive moments later?

The Verdict

Brian Michael Bendis continues his flipside take on the X-Men. It's great to see a writer apply different takes to the same franchise. ALL-NEW X-MEN and UNCANNY X-MEN are not and should not be similar titles. The first issue gave us an outside look at the characters but with the more direct storytelling here, we get some insights into their current status after having their powers messed up at the end of AVENGERS VS. X-MEN. Seeing Emma Frost in a slightly vulnerable position was surprising and provided more insight into her character. Chris Bachalo does a great job depicting several scenes of conversation. There is some action here but as things are still being established, it's important to see how this series will move forward. Bendis is delivering questions and mysteries to this series and that's adding to the excitement that has been much needed in the X-Men franchise.

Nothing against Chris Bachalo, he is a fine artist. I just don't feel his style fits the tone of the book.

I thought it was great, although I wish you would get a better image of magneto. It is interesting to see Magik much more sympathetic too

I really liked the Scott/Emma interactions here. Her dialogue still seems a little off to me though.

I still can't get over how weird the traitor angle is. Granted, we don't know the full scope of it yet (they could very well be a double-agent), but it's currently a little hard to swallow, even though I'm enjoying the rest of the story.

I mean, c'mon, it's freakin' Magneto. Very little about his defection makes sense: on the one hand, if he really has turned on Scott, his motivation doesn't really line up with any of his characterisation from his extensive comic history. Not only that, but he's blaming Scott for breaking his powers, when Scott is hardly any more to blame than Emma (who also interacted him with Phoenix-infused powers) or Tony Stark (who caused the whole mess in the first place), and so the end result is Magento basically reverting to a pretty petty villain.

On the other hand, even if he's a double agent for Scott, it's a little much to accept that S.H.I.E.L.D have welcomed him with open arms. Aren't Magneto's collective crimes significantly greater than Scott's? And hasn't he been one of Scott's closest allies for a few years now? If he does turn around at some point and reveal the double-deception, it will make S.H.I.E.L.D and Hill look like morons.

Overall, the whole mole subplot doesn't make a great deal of sense to me in regards to both Magneto and S.H.I.E.L.D, but it's still early days, so I'm interested to see how it plays out.

Better than the first issue--the characters actually resemble their previous selves this time. It would have been nice to have a more subtle handling of the psychology of Scott and Emma: having them just vomit out what they're thinking and feeling made this issue feel in parts like a Dr. Phil crossover. But we know Bendis doesn't do subtle.

All the new mutants so far seem as dull as dishwater, but then so do most of the lot at the Jean Grey school, too. Is it really that hard to come up with fun powers and characters? Guess it is.

The finale page I think is confirmation that the traitor isn't a double agent. There's no advantage to Scott to have that happen.

I was a fan of Scott and Emma's interactions, I like how it wasn't really a blaming game but rather a nice self evaluation of sorts I disliked the way the dialogue progressed and the art just doesn't fit. I was fine when Bachalo was on WatX because the context and the feel of the book fit his art style. But fir a title that is based on revolution with characters like Magik, Scott, Magneto and Emma it just feels extremely off.

I like how of Emma and Scott still have a door opened for a return (and I was thinking "say yes!! say yes!!" when she asked him if he wanted to come back instead of that abstract answer). If Bendis finds interesting to write about them dealing with this, and knowing each other outside of a relationship, that's fine, but only if they're back together at the end with a stronger relationship!

Please Brian, there is not a better couple in the whole Marvel Universe. If you're doing this let it be just to strengthen their relationship, making them come back together more confident on each other and marry when they can take a break from everything that's happening... please?

My feelings about what's happening with Magny were pretty much reflected here:

If he's indeed a traitor it wouldn't make sense at all, specially when it was Bendis who wrote on All New X-Men that Magneto wants Cyclops to solve his problem with some intense pannels of both having an argument.

Yep, I'm going to be pissed if there isn't misdirection going on. And even if there is, parts of what happened don't make sense. This issue disappointed me after a relatively strong start. I like the crew in this one, so I'll be disappointed in ANXM is the better book.

Loved this issue, like, a whole lot.

Emma and Scott's conversation, the new kids reaction, and Magik and Bejamin's last panel made me laugh like crazy. Not to forget this issue's last panel.

The Avengers are there to conversate, try to convince Cyclops and Emma to turn themselves in an leave the new Mutants in Wolvie's hand (ugh, worse fate than death), but even they know that won't happen so easily, and it seems obvious they're expecting a fight since they brought some big guns like Hulk, Iron-Man and even Ms.Marvel with them.

I really, REALLY want to see how team Cyke's manages to escape. We'll probably see more of Magik's new capabilities, and probably some help from the new Mutants, I can see Benjamin and Eva's abilities coming quite in handy.

Really can't wait for next issue. I'm totally loving UXM.

these 2 Bendis books are great. I'm happy to see most people are enjoying them. I'm sure he has his plan to have the 2 stories go along for a couple years before they end up at war together against some baddy like Sinister or Apacalypse. Its the ride that takes us there that's going to be so much fun. He already is doing an excellent job on writing 2 differant Cyclops.

It chafes me to say this, but this issue was AMAZING.

The scenes between Scott and Emma re more than I ever hoped for. They're utter perfection and I'm shocked to be saying that.

I'm enjoying reading all of the positive feedback. For me I enjoyed this issue a lot more than the first issue. Frankly I'm not the biggest fan of Bendis when it comes to writing Emma Frost, however I do like that he's not making her into a whiny ex girlfriend. It was good dialogue between her and Cyclops - and I hope that they progress as friends and end up back together. It's actually nice to see them apart, hopefully we'll see Emma become more of her own person now. Other than that the issue was alright. I wasn't a fan of Magik being sympathetic to the new recruits that's not really like her - however i did enjoy her " I would break you" comment, that was more Magik. I'm also excited to read the next issue, should be interesting how they get out of that mess. Here's to hoping Emma's powers come in handy.

@gridde: The possibility that Magneto loss of powers could possibly broke him mentally. His powers were something of a clutch for him, along with his ego being interconnected. Not being able to manipulate metal like he used too. He could be just lashing out to everyone who he hold responsible, and not fully thinking it through,

This is better then I expected. This series is growing on me.

Finally, Magik is sounding more like....Magik. Emma, not so much, but there is an improvement. I am quite shocked that I am enjoying Emma in this vulnerable position, I always loved her as the White Queen, oozing sex appeal and confidence, but it's nice seeing her insecurities surface. It makes sense that a lot of their confidence stems from their powers. I would love to see Emma fight the through her issues with her current depowered state. Makes her even more heroic.

Still hoping against hope that Mags is still on team Scott's side.

I disagree. I have really come to like the more cartoon-y, less polished types of art-work, David Aja, Chris Samnee, and others. I just like how it gives a completely different feel than Stuart Immonen's work on All new X-Men.

True, though he's lost his powers at least once before. It's kinda weak grounds for his recent character shifts.

Really enjoyed this issue more than the first. Made me chuckle that the Avengers got ready and flew to Australia in a jet within about 2 minutes of Magneto's call.

I hope Christopher and Eva stick around! They seem to stand out the most of the new mutants.

I'm liking the new look skinhead Magneto; is this some sort of tribute to Charles?
