Uncanny X-Men #1 - The New Revolution

4

UNCANNY X-MEN is back but it's different than before. Find out what Cyclops is up to now.

The Good

UNCANNY X-MEN is back. But it's not the same title you remember from before. The face of the X-Men has changed since AVENGERS VS X-MEN and Cyclops is now seen as a mutant terrorist. What sets this series apart from the others is seeing how he goes about on his mission to protect mutants. In the pages of ALL-NEW X-MEN, we've seen Cyclops mention setting up his own school. He's been seeking out new mutants as they're powers develop in order to add them to his ranks.

This issue starts off in a way different from what you'd expect. We're too assume that this is Cyclops and his team's book but we're seeing it through someone else's perspective. Because of accusations of being a terrorist and trying to start a revolution, S.H.I.E.L.D. is brought in to get an update on Scott's activities. So rather than start off with seeing their new set up for the school, we see Maria Hill take in everything that Cyclops is doing. What makes it even more interesting is the fact that a non-S.H.I.E.L.D. person is the one bringing Hill up to speed. In other words, get ready for an interesting and crazy twist at the end.

Chris Bachalo provides the art and his over-the-top action scenes are always fun to see. You may have seen the preview, there are some new looks for the members, new costumes. It's great to see this team of X-Men along with some of the new mutants go up against Sentinels.

I love that a certain character is finally not willing to blindly follow Cyclops. It's something I've questioned before.

Bendis is making it clear that this title will be completely different from ALL-NEW X-MEN.

The Bad

This is an interesting way to start the issue but it doesn't quite give a feel to what new readers might be able to expect. They get a glimpse of the team, from an outside perspective but it's almost like they don't get a direct connection with the 'stars' of the book in the first issue.

We also seem to jump forward a tiny bit from their last appearance in ALL-NEW X-MEN. Seeing the team with new costumes, it was a little odd. It almost felt as if I missed an issue or appearance in which Cyclops, Magneto and the others decide to get new costumes for some reason.

The Verdict

Brian Michael Bendis' second X-Men title is here and he's showing that he won't simply be repeating what he's doing on ALL-NEW X-MEN. With the current view of Cyclops and the way he's handling himself in public, this volume of UNCANNY X-MEN will definitely have a different flavor from the past ones. Bendis is showing that while it might be easy to simply release yet another X-title, there is a definite meaning and direction in this one. As the first issue of a new (Marvel NOW!) volume, it has a slightly odd start. We don't fully get a direct feel for the characters but instead are introduced to them through another person, giving a sort of narrated feel. There is a crazy twist that will ensure you run out to the comic shop when the second issue is out. Bachalo's art is fun and frantic, capturing the lively action scenes as well as the more subdued interrogation scenes.

I don't think there was an issue where they decided to change costumes, they just did it. And as far as the twist ending

I thought Mags and Scott were bros for life from here on out. Hopefully Erik gets turned into a villain again. It would be one step closer to bringing back classic X-Men.

Bachalo is a great artist. He draws some comic book @$$ comic book art.

Sorry G-Man, I think:

Magneto is still blindly following Scott. I think this is all part of their revolution plan. Magneto is a double-agent, imo.

Great review. :)

@AdamC: That's also a possibility. I guess I'd be alright with that too. I'm not sure what they'd be trying to accomplish though. I suppose we'll see in two weeks.

@AdamC: Either way is fine with me. I love a good mystery in comics. We don't get many of them. Keep us on our toes. I liked him being the one in this issue rather than some random character with too much info.

"Wow, Eric, the old you could have balled these puppies into a pinball before they even -" Um, excuse me Mr. Bendis? I'm not sure who you think you're writing in the diamond body, but that sure as hell wasn't Emma Frost of the acerbic wit, IMPECCABLE vocabulary and a tongue that could lash you just as soundly as her telepathy used to be able to. Please whip out a thesaurus and refer to Whedon's and Morrison's runs for further reference.

This line really stood out to me...can no-one (bar Morrison and Whedon) get her character right?

I liked this issue. Not a fan of Bachalo's art, but it wasn't awful in this issue. I wish we could've gotten my boy Mike Deodato Jr. on this piece.

I will say that my experiences with Bendis' books are both good and bad. He honestly has a lot of really amazing ideas to share with us. But, it also seems like he takes way too many liberties with his books. He changes characters around for the sake of his own storytelling and all that. His Magik, as I noticed in this book and a few ANXM, is written terribly. Did he forget that she was Russian? She's been in America for a while, but she would definitely not be using slang like she has been. His Emma also isn't perfect, but I didn't mind it as much. I just wish the editors or whoever wouldn't give him so much power and flexibility. His stories are great, but sometimes it seems like he just doesn't understand these characters or where they're coming from--literally, in Magik's case.

I'm still looking forward to this series however.

I also agree.

Well about him being a double agent, not about the blindly following Scott thing, it makes sense to me that he's following him, like I Prof. X kinda took a back seat to Scott too didn't he? Like back during second coming? I just think Magneto realises that its time to pass it onto another generation or something...

This book was real good, looking forward to more!

I've been finding All New X-Men kind of meh but this was fantastic. Bendis was referencing so many things relevant to today's society. Such a well crafted issue.

Totally agree. Not a big Bachalo fan but I have to say this was pretty good. But the coloring makes it look lifeless! Stark juxtaposition to ANXM for sure, maybe that was the idea, but it's ugly.

+1 to the double agent part, basically because on an issue written by Bendis on all-new x-men, Mags confronts Scott about all that stuff he mentions, and that Scott has to make things right because he owes that to him and they sort of get to an understandingt about that. It would make no sense for Mags to be a traitor after that issue so I think he's a double agent. Cyclops is a clever strategists, Mags has credible reasons for SHIELD to trust his word, so he makes a good mole.

You know, the twist isn't hard to guess. Especially since, well, there's only ONE other team member that fits all the physical description of the person talking.

Personally, I thought it was a very slow book and I was annoyed that Magik and Emma were talking like dumb blondes instead of Magik and Emma.

This, specially for Emma. That's not her character at all. The only reason I overlooked it is that Magik called Cyclops Emma's boyfriend and that gave me hope it might not be over, but it's possibly just Bendis dumbinifing them.

Yeah, I thought that too. What's even worse was Magik using the phrase "Scare the holy bejesus out of-" Really? Does that sound like something that stoic, amoral, pretty-much-dead-on-the-inside Magik would say?

Was never a big fan of Bachalo's artwork before and this issue was no different. The story though was fantastic and unfortunately I saw the twist coming from the moment I read the first page... :/

Magik also sounded very weird in this issue... Not like she's normally written

I'm a little confused. Why is Magneto turning on Cyclops when he's the one who broke him out of prison in the first place? And I don't get why he has problems with his powers. I don't remember him having any contact with the Phoenix Force during AVX.

@SpaceCommander: There's one panel in issue 12 or 11 of AvX where Scott lights Magneto on fire with his Phoenix powers. That effected his powers; it made him weaker. I guess it didn't take affect until after they broke Scott out of prison. Magneto angrily confronts Scott about this, telling him that Scott had to help him get his powers back because he chased after the phoenix which possessed him and caused this problem.

What annoys me the most is that even when fans tell him he's doing something wrong, he doesn't fix his mistakes. And SOMEHOW he keeps selling.

I am a fan of cyclops' new costume design, but the way bachalo draws it is atrocious. Same with the rest of his designs for the team, they look horrid. I just don't understand what marvel or these writers see in his work, I was so glad when he left WatXM, but now he's on another X title. Still great first issue. Oh and I hope our traitor isn't a double agent. He was never to be trusted. Never should have been on the team.

Emma saying "Wow" in any other tone other than ironic or post-coital is out of character.

But hey, it's Bendis. Knowing a character before you write them is just way too damn hard.

Sigh, I know. But nothing after #500 has been funny, but it's all one huge joke. It has to be.

Emma will sleep with someone random though, since Bendis views women as garages for the male genitalia.

So this debate on Mags.. is he with or against scott?!! >.>... all these debates gave me a headache (i'm pretty slow lolol). I don't know why some people don't like Bachalo's art. Sure some panels or splash pages are confusing as hell, but it's unique, and there aren't many books out there with his awesome style ^_^. I like how he drew Cyclops, emphasis on his 'Slim' nature.

I actually want an issue addressing where or how these people get their costumes.

Cyclops had to sit down at some point and decide on colour, design and material. Why do we not see this? Same with anyone. Why do they just get them?
