Uncanny X-Force #21 - Otherworld, Chapter Two

4

Betsy is faced with the option of saving Fantomex's life, or betraying her brother. Whose side will she be on?

The Good

After you spend nearly twelve issues with Jerome Opena's artistic style on UNCANNY X-FORCE it can be hard to get comfortable with someone whose style is so totally different than what you are used to, but Greg Tocchini is starting to grow on me. Much of the story focuses on specific plot developments and close range action panels which seems to be something Tocchini is really good with.

Ill start by saying that I felt this issue was much better than the last. I think the parallel of having Betsy come in and rescue Fantomex after everything that happened during the Dark Angel Saga is very cool. Remender continues to deliver a really fun and entertaining dynamic between the characters here and it is beginning to become a story I am really looking forward to.

The pacing of the story is really good, and the balance between the scenes featuring Jean and Betsy and the ongoing battle with these "demonic invaders" is interesting.

However, I was left with a lot of questions.

The Bad

Now, this isn't so much a complaint of mine but one that I have come across in my discussions with people regarding the events of this book. It seems, to some, that Jaime (Captain Britain) feels slightly out of character. Some of the events in this issue contradict the characters and events that have previously affected the Braddock family. Being that I am not so familiar with Betsy's brothers, I can't speak for that as a complaint of mine. However, I feel that if Remender is so strongly going against the characterizations of certain characters (like Captain Britain,) that there must be a reason for it. We just may not know it yet.

The Verdict

As Remender continues to explore Otherworld, the story is getting more and more interesting. Readers are left with a huge cliff hanger at the end of the issue that will guarantee to leave you wanting more. Who is the mysterious man on the final page with a vendetta against Fantomex and Psylocke? And why? Great dialogue in this issue and I it is definitely great to see Nightcrawler as a member of the team.

Not really into the whole Otherworld arc but I do like seeing Nightcrawler settling into his position on the team.

As I said with the previous issue as well: the art is a real problem for me. It doesn't suit the book at all. Can't wait for the regular artists to get back like Tan or Opena.

I think this is the worst issue that's come out so far. Things happened, but at the same time it didn't feel like anything happened.

why are they not putting deadpool's head on his body....

yup. its not even that its bad, its that the series has headed in a completely new direction, and art wise i can hardly take it. again, its not even that bad of art but its not the x-force i was reading before and i REALLY loved the beginning of this series. the stories dont have to stay the same, but get opena back!!

Seriously though... why would the rulers of reality make such a big deal over one signle murder that doesnt affect the multiverse at all!?!? there HAS to be something behind that.

um he killed apocolypse. how does that NOT affect the multiverse at all? APOCOLYPSE. hes a pretty big deal

Yeah... 1 apocalypse in the entire multiverse. Its not like what he did put the existance of 616 on jeopardy, like say House of M did. It was just a plaing old killing. Doesnt matter if he killed Apocalypse or Galactus himself, it still doesnt affect the universe on a reality level, therefore the Cap Brit Corps have no business, especially in the middle of the sh*tstorm they are currently in, going after 1 guy. With that criteria they should be going after Selene for killing Externals, and Thor for killing Sentry and whatnot.

I like to think of myself as a semi-intelligent chap, but honestly these last two issues have left me scratching my head. Not sure if it is the setting or the art but I was awfully confused while reading these,

Thank you everyone who explained a bit! Not being a big follower of Excalibur, i thought I was missing out on something and I should know who that was.

Yeah, both Brian and Jaime are completely off character. Jaimie who is usually the embodiment of madness is totally parsimonious, and Brian who is supposed to be very balanced-minded and always believes the best in everyone is acting like a huge jackass. Altho back when Betsy first died he was a huge jackass as well... especially to Meggan. Speaking of which, her presence was actually very refreshing! She doesnt come around with BS.

Seriously though... why would the rulers of reality make such a big deal over one signle murder that doesnt affect the multiverse at all!?!? there HAS to be something behind that.

Much better issue than the last. Enjoying Otherworlds. Tocchini art was a little bit better this time.

@GBrutality: He's a brand new Remender creation. There are 3 statues that appear in 18 while Genesis and Warren are fighting. They are foreshadowing easter eggs involving Weapon Plus and Fantomex according to Remender.

I've read very little Excalibur in the past but, yeah I dont recall Capt. Britain being so douchey. I agree I thought this issue was better than the previous. Seeing Wolverine get pretzeled was awesome.

I enjoyed this issue. I thought Nightcrawler was great. I don't know enough about Jamie to know if this out of charecter for him, but it does seem like Brian is acting a little strange. I'm not sure how to add the spoiler thing but I do have a spoliery question, Who the hell was the guy at the end?
