Uncanny Avengers #3 - Skull & Bones

3

It's time for the team to face the new and improved Red Skull.

The Good

Red Skull's attack is underway and he's proving to be quite the foe. Let's be honest, we've seen so many Red Skull stories and this could have easily been just another one. The way Red Skull has improved himself is questionable but it has added a new twist to him. It also makes him the perfect first foe for this unification of the Avengers and X-Men.

Another interesting dynamic I've waited to see was the question of leadership. It seems strange to have a team with Captain America and even Wolverine yet Havok is the one calling the shots against Red Skull. This isn't to say that Havok is not a good or capable leader. He's proven that in the past with X-Factor. If Havok had any doubts before, he's definitely put them aside as he display quite a bit of comfort and attitude while the action heats up.

Whether it's the full meshing of both teams but the action here has a different feel compared to what we've seen before. Red Skull is taking a different approach, especially in the allies he's chosen. The team dynamic of the Avengers is different as well. You can see that this is still a new team as they don't quite have the teamwork angle figured out.

The Bad

This Red Skull is still a little hard to get used to. I'm still finding it odd how he was able to gain his new powers. I wasn't aware it worked that way plus the fact that there should have been more security around the...body he used. His teammates are providing a good challenge to the Avengers but they feel really far off from the types he usually allies himself with.

It could be the pressure of the battle but the way Havok speaks to Captain America felt a little out of line. I understand that there is a lot going on but it seemed he had his doubts about leading the team and now is doing it full force with plenty of attitude to back it up.

John Cassaday's art is a mixed bag. In the past I've been a huge fan but there are moments characters almost look comical. Another factor might be the colors that need to be used. This isn't to say that Laura Martin does a bad job but the team has such brightly colored costumes (like Wolverine's yellow suit) and the battle scene looks too bright. We also get a lot of bright backgrounds. Some is justified by flames from the destruction around but there's too many yellow and and orange plain backgrounds.

The Verdict

We're seeing a different type of Avengers story and that's the whole point of this series. Rather than give us more of what we've seen many times, Rick Remender is mixing up different concepts from the Avengers and X-Men. Some of these are a little hard to get used to but that's what gives this book an edge. You're not quite sure what to expect. John Cassaday's art has its moments where it shines but there are many scenes that fall a little flat. We also get too many brightly colored plain backgrounds. With the chaos and destruction, it should have a darker feel to it. It's great seeing this new team try to function together. If they survive, this will definitely make them stronger but seeing them try to mesh together is what sets this apart from the other Avengers (and X-Men) titles.

I thought this was okay. I wasn't blown away. I did like the Red Skull's henchmen but I found it pretty strange that they'd just happen to find so many mutants wandering around Manhattan. I did like how Remender used Thor because it made sense. I agree on the art but I was never a Cassady fan. It's fine but it doesn't blow me away never did.

there was just so much expository dialogue boxes that it felt like this should have been a novel rather than a comic book

there's something now right about the this series, maybe its the art, or maybe its the "meh" story or silly team make up!

overall i get the sense MarvelNOW! has not be a good idea, everything feels forced or manipulated by disney to be more like the phase 2 movies

I loved the story in this issue. I thought was great. It's the art that sucks. Opena should be on this tiltle even tho he's killing it on Avengers. Then again he'd be killing it anywhere. I don't agree with the rating. The story is starting to take off big time.

I thought the art was a bit better than the previous issues, aside from two or three panels. Still, only one more John issue, then it's one by Coipel and then Acuna "for life"

but yeah the story is very good, one of my faves atm

This book was just too overly dark and bleak. I understand that fit Venom and X-Force, but man, this book is almost depressingly dark.

I'm starting to think that Remender is a one trick pony. Make things dark, kill a lot of people.

I think this issue is made worse by it's delays and it's weak premise for the first story. From what I gather, the next arc deals with Thor's relationship with Apocalypse. THAT's what should have kicked this story off. This arc is fairly generic, and doesn't feel like Remender is the writer. But once Cassaday leaves, all should be well.

I like this book so far. I think that this has been the weakest issue, but I'm still liking the story. As for Cassaday's art, it just doesn't work for me on this book.

I feel as though I'm going through the motions when reading this title. It's got some heart but for the most part it just feels odd. I'd like to see more focus on the team members as individuals. Plus I hate the S-Men.

i kinda like the fact that havok is the leader. he probably has the most destructive ability out of everyone in the group, heck its so powerful it could possibly kill thor.

Yeah, after three issues I gotta say I'm done. Remender (as usual) has some interesting ideas but right now I'm just not liking the execution. After loving his UXF after initially LOATHING it I want to give him the benefit of the doubt but I'm just not feeling it. Too much just not working for me. First there's the art, it's really not my style. Very bland penciling (nice work by the colorist though). Second the Skull just all of a sudden mastering Chuck's powers with no side effects or apparent learning curve? (Something akin to what Young Jean is going through in All New X-Men is only natural and logical). Even a man as driven and determined as Skull should need more than a freaking issue to just be all "Yup, now I have mind control". Also...is, is that how mutant telepathy works? I'm pretty sure it's an innately genetic ability and is honed by training, not something you can just easily transfer via physical transplant. That aside, it's been shown in xbooks for years that most members have been trained to resist mental manipulation by telepaths and said training was conducted by top tier wielders of the ability like Chuck, Jean,& Emma. Vets like Rogue and Wanda should be able to fight off the commands of the Skull (even with Chuck's brain) a bit more so than they've been shown to be doing. Honestly, the only thing I like about this book so far is the fact that Alex is leading.

There's something that I don't like about this book. I'd heard good things about Remender, but I am not overly impressed with his work on this title. The characterization is a bit harsh and he seems to thrive on the heroes in conflict with each other cliche. Also, the Scarlet Witch comes off like a fascist. As for this latest issue, I find it hard to believe these Avengers and X-Men would fall so easily to the newly telepathic Red Skull. Also, the way he gained his powers is ridiculous. If Xavier was dead, shouldn't his brain be a useless paperweight now? When Morrison did his U-Man crazy transplant stuff in NXM, he at least acknowledged the absurdity of it and showed that deluded humans with pilfered powers are no match for natural mutants. And what's with this Honest John dude who can delude Thor? It's all another way to create conflict among the characters and show some "cool" face offs. Also, Cassaday's work on this title sucks. Facial expressions are completely blah and he continues to give some female characters blunt noses

I agree with JonesDeini,

"Uncanny" is treading water having Big Name Characters hoping they will $ell, $ell, $ell!, while "The Avengers" and "The New Avengers" have potential for Epic storylines.

This will be my last issue, as I won't waste more Money on the rest of the Arc to finish.
