Uncanny Avengers #14 - The Day Nor The Hour

4

The battle against the Apocalypse Twins heats up. This is definitely an issue people will be talking about.

The Good

I've had a lot of people the last couple days ask if they should be reading UNCANNY AVENGERS. Rick Remender has consistently been giving us interesting stories here. The good and the bad thing about the series is that it is separate from the other core Avengers and X-Men titles. It definitely stands on its own and, as this issue shows, it's not a title to be overlooked.

Remender opens the issue with some fascinating scenes. Kang is taking a trip all over time and space and what he's up to is something that have big repercussions later on. We see characters I never would have expected in a current Marvel title. Of course the real emphasis of the story is dealing with the Apocalypse Twins. Scarlet Witch is trying to make a deal and trick them in order to help save the mutant race. Wolverine has his hands full with Daken. Rogue and Sunfire have their own mission which goes against what Wolverine has ordered.

It's great to see Steve McNiven's art. There are quite a few great moments and seeing McNiven's detailed on the battered characters is great. Of course there are some really memorable scenes as well.

The Bad

The pages in the beginning were cool but didn't feel like they fit in with the rest of the issue. But build up for the next issue is good.

Hopefully readers will read the issue before being exposed to spoilers. Some big things happen and there's always the doubt, as comic fans, whether or not they'll stick. Even though the action is all taking place within a certain area, they sometimes come across as feeling pretty distant.

The Verdict

Get ready for some crazy stuff here. Rick Remender has been building up the story throughout this series and he does not slow down here. We're seeing more being added to the overall story and Remender does not shy away from the action. Big things happen which will lead to some interesting repercussions. Seeing how everyone deals with this, if they're given the chance amidst all the action, will be intriguing. Steve McNiven's art is a welcomed sight as he gets right down the gritty detail required in the scenes. What it comes down to is, you should not miss this issue.

Pretty big events in this issue. I'll probably have to wait until the next issue to be sure about certain things that happened at the end. I may be a bit annoyed about some of what happened.

I just noticed you've posted this in the forum for the French editions of the series.

its still very meh, its very bland x-men book, its very bland Avengers book. its just an unfortunate anagram, a marketing gimmick thats gone on way to long. would rather have seen this story play out in old Uncanny X-force.

the whole red skull future things has become very annoying very fast

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? I knew someone was gonna die, but Rogue!? This series started off great then got pretty weak and I had a hard time getting through it. I was gonna drop it except for my fav X-Man Rogue being in it was the only reason I powered through it. Now just when the book finally in the last few issues started to get way better they decide that Rogues is the one to die... Seriously!? ugh!

I cannot stand Scarlet Witch. Even when she's dying, she's got to act so smug and superior.

I've said before and I'll say it again Avengers and X-men should never co-exist and crap like this just proves now my favorite Avenger and my former favorite X-men member are dead because a writer just had to force this bull crap "Oh there from separate teams with different ideology so they automatically hate each other, I'm so smart!" Just disband this team already or better yet cancel this book Marvel. Get these two teams back to being ignorant assholes to each other not giving a damn if the teams are in dire life threatening trouble.

Sorry, Rogue is an a-hole. The former girlfriend and ally of Magneto, someone who sent an electromagnetic pulse through the world dooming thousands of lives and notorious anti-human criminal mastermind, takes issue with the Scarlet Witch? The daughter of Mystique and Destiny, stands in judgement of Wanda? A woman who, knowingly and willingly, participated in some hefty anarchistic actions and almost killed the Avengers after nearly killing Ms. Marvel feels she needs to eliminate Wanda?

@rubear:

Throughout this entire series, she never seemed to really accept responsibility or act guilty for what she did. She would just get defensive whenever Rogue or someone else would bring it up. Everyone would condemn Cyclops for what he'd done, but I think Scarlet Witch did much, much worse things, and didn't really seem to pay for it at all.

The McNiven art was great. Really put me in the mood for a big brawler comic. Thankfully I managed to avoid spoilers for this one. Two of the three departed members in this book I'd really grown to like a lot. People can say what they want, this feels like good old fashion Marvel comics to me. I really enjoy this series. This issue was no exception.

Just to be clear here, Wolverine healed from last issue and Wonder Man, Scarlet Witch, and Rogue all died, right? Still an enjoyable issue, but I'm not sure how the book will turn out after having a third of its cast get axed in a single issue.

I actually loved this issue, and I don't see why people don't like it. X-Men and Avengers working together has always been something I liked, and I can see why Remender wanted it. To be honest though, I don't know why people are suprised, AvX showed that big things would happen. This is my favorite team book right now, and I am really enjoying. People who are mad that Rogue died, suck it up. She features in other series. It's almost certain she will be back before or after this arc. When Kang features in a story just believe all dead heroes will be revieved.

As for the issue I loved how we got to see how Logan felt towards Rogue, and even Scarlet Witch. Going enraged and slashing up Horsemen Daken. This one issue is going to leave a big mark on Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man, and Rogue for a long time. Simon is going to hate Rogue for what she has done, and Wanda will never forgive her. It will basically like a change of tablea on them. I can't wait for next issue to see how Wasp fights off the Sentry and to see Thor become completely enraged when he finds out Rogue is dead.

I just thought of something:

Assuming Rogue's death sticks, at least for awhile, maybe her death is why Gambit joins X-Factor. I think I remember reading that Remy left the JGS for personal reasons. Doesn't get much more personal than the death of your true love. He could be blaming Logan for not saving her, after all he was right there, like 2 feet from her.

Having the solicitations released three months ahead really takes the surprise out of a lot of comics. Rouge's on the cover of February's Avengers AI, so we know she makes it out of this somehow.

And if this takes place before Infinity (which I think it does), Then we already know that Wanda and Simon are alive, because they were in the Avengers Assemble tie-in issue.

And let me guess, Havok was talking to his and Wasp's theoretical daughter at the start of the issue.

Honestly, I'm done with this book. After the big death, which might I add was insulting to anyone who knows that character for the past three decades, made me sick to my stomach.

Why should I bother reading this book if it's just going to be "Captain America, Thor and Wolverine save the day again, the rest go die". I don't care about those three, and what they did to, well, the character who died is flat out disgusting. Figures since Remender said he doesn't like said character in the first place, so he had to make the death the most unheroic and shock value crap I have ever seen.

So whatever, I'm done with this book, and I'm boycotting Rick Remender from now on. Don't need to have a writer who kills off other perfectly good characters just to enforce the super popular characters to grieve.

Just bullcrap.

I'm bothered by the people that say they are bothered by this book. I just want to yell "cant you see the web that's being spun!" It seems like people are taking this single issue out of context with the story and dont realize that usually Remender has something else up his sleeve.

Rogue has Wolverine's healing factor. His healing factor thats not compensating for Adamantium. She's not dead. Kang and his timestream schemes will almost certainly bring back Wanda or Wonder or both. We also have other plot devices that are completely ignored by most readers, namely the death of the Celestial earlier on. We haven't seen ramifications of that yet, and they were hinted at after it's death.

If you reread issue #4 at the end, Wanda is still alive and they talk about seven who became one, maybe Kang's team: Strife, May Parker, Doom 2099, Arno Stark, Ahab, Magistrate Braddock and Abomination-Deathlocked.

So I don't know what to think about this series.

It has some good stuff that's for sure. I think this is the only team that's really doing something about mutant-human co-existence (Havok's right, there are no "mutants and humans" there's just "people") and I like to see Wolverine all f***ed up after what he did in Uncanny X-Force, he did pretty bad things there and it's good to see there are consequences. Also I like the fact that Remender's kind of the R.R Martin of Marvel and can kill anyone without hesitation, it really gives the series the vibe that anything could happen.

But on the other hand... I don't know. I don't care about most of this people, I really hate Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man and I've always thought Sunfire was kind of lame (that suit doesn't help), Red Skull's scheme was as cheesy as he is (he's probably the most dated and lamest villain in the entire Marvel universe) and Kang's plan (at least for now) doesn't make any sense. Also the Apocalypse twins are way less scary than they should be.

-I hope my english is at least understandable, it's not my language-

Agreed Rogue's death gains no sympathy from me. Like her X-men cohorts they always seem so sanctimonious just because they operate out of the law.

Like I said before, this book has four of my all-time favorite comicbook chracters in it - Thor, Rogue, Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man. Given what happened this issue I would have to hate the series now. But I learned to trust Rick Remender, after I got fooled badly myself in Uncanny X-Force (you know... Fantomex.)

I mean, Rogue's got Wolvie's healing factor, so she'll be alright. Simon basically IS pure energy, so he's not really dead. And Wanda? She's the Scarlet Witch, she controls chaos, I guess she'll find a way...

Or am I only telling myself to calm down? Was I fooled by Remender myself?

McNiven's art in this was pretty fantastic. I liked it a lot more than anything else he's done.

I was pretty sad to see Wanda die again, especially after Simon said he came back from the dead to be with her. Awesome stuff.

Rogue dying didn't make me sad, but it was certainly a shocking scene, especially the way it was drawn.

This series is as wild and unpredictable as X-Force was, so I won't even try to guess what happens next. I'll just enjoy it. I definitely would have given this one 5 stars.

This is an amazing title. Haven't been this captivated by an X-Title in years. It has all the elements that Claremont conjured together in his seminal run; the personalities, the in-fighting, the grand adventure and it has reinvigorated the issue of mutants place in the world much more convincingly than ANXM or UXM.

Not my favorite issue but still great. I can't recommend this title enough.

You don't think Wanda was being judgmental at the beginning of the series when she went on that rant about the X-Men while might I add having been the catalyst of most of their recent problems and then having the nerve to tell Rogue about who Professor X was as a person while Wanda hadn't seen another mutant other than her brother in ages.

Don't get me wrong, I feel that both Wanda and Rogue have been pretty out of character in this whole series, but come on...they have both been jerks. As for the Magneto parts, I'd point out that Mags had been a X-Man in good standing for awhile, he literally pulled Kitty Pryde out of the either, and it was not great writing that had Rogue with Mags in the first place.

@bluealchemist:

It's just bugged me how everyone demonizes Cyclops for what he did while he was possessed by a godlike being, but Wanda got a free pass for everything she did, and she acts so arrogant and superior about it, too. I'm sure she got hundreds, if not thousands, of mutants killed.
