Ultimate FF #5 - Stuck, Part 2 of 2 Review

4

To save their universe, Sue must have a baby with Reed.

The Good

ULTIMATE FF continues to go off the rails and be silly, and it's a ton of fun. Now, the humor here isn't over-the-top, but it does break a bit of the tradition the Ultimate Universe has of being taken a bit more seriously than its 616 counterpart. The issue deals with the super-heroes from the Spider-Ham universe. This version of the Spider-Ham universe has dealt with all the same things the Ultimate universe has dealt with over the past few years, including the death of Peter Porker and the coming of Galactypus, which is easily the most genius thing in comic books. Miles Mohames is here to warn the Future Foundation that certain actions need to happen in order for the universe to stay alive.

Let's get the animal stuff out of the way; it's awesome. Seeing the first three issues suffer through some really rough art, which in turn, turned people off the book, was hard for Ultimate fans. This second half has been a lot of fun, and writer Joshua Fialkov is tapping into the ridiculousness as the series draws to a close. Characters like Hulk-Bunny, Ducktor Doom, and Simian Storm are the highlights of the opening.

All of these animal puns aren't just for fun though. It becomes clear to Sue Storm that in order to save the world, she has to have a baby with Reed Richards. How these two are going to do that is another story with an insane reveal page at the end of the issue.

The Bad

As with the last issue, the art is better, but it's still just ok. It really could have benefited from an inker because everything feels so flimsy and frail. The thin line work from Araujo has a certain appeal, but putting an inker on this issue would have given the characters a bit more depth. In addition, the scribbled in shadow work does not look very good.

The Verdict

While the story is out there and it took 5 issues to really find a footing, ULTIMATE FF #5 is a hit. Sadly, it's coming to an end soon. Fialkov has a field day and throws as many animal puns into the issue as possible, and the issue ends in a very creepy/scary way, especially if the reader is a man. Flat-out, I like what's going on here, as an Ultimate fan. While it's no MILES MORALES, ULTIMATE FF, right now, is a ton of fun and a worth picking up.

Oh my god, what is up with that cover?

The ending of this book made me feel ill. There is no reason in hell they have to have a baby in this fashion it was all for shock value and if the roles were reversed and Reed was going to harvest an egg from Sue, Marvel would already be flooded with angry letters.

This being my first issue of this series it really is no shock why this book is being cancelled. If Invincible has shown us anything is you can use rape or whatever the hell was going on as cheap shock value and quickly pretend it never happens, Seeing how a new writer is taking over for the last issue I see this either never being brought up or retconned.

This series is awesome.

@inkink: what was the huge shock at the end?

Posted by InkInk

@master_thief: Sue captures Reed and it looks like she will surgically extract his sperm or possibly remove his testicles. Because this woman has no idea how to give a handjob and use artificial insemination

i want a galactypus action figure

I heard there was supposed to be another page to give more context. No confirmation on this.

I bought this issue because of the preview on this site. I thought it would be fun then the last pages came along..... all I have to say is crap like this, is why people do not care about the Ultimate universe anymore.

I mean seriously a characters testicle where implied to be removed solely for shock value. Remember Marvel, shock value is what killed all momentum the ultimate universe used to have.

I love Araujo's art. Pains me that Avengers AI died just for him to move on to schlock like this..

Anyone complaining about the ending should go see a doctor about that giant stick up their ass.

This book was awesome from begining to creepy ending. This really makes me want this title uncancelled immediately. I hope we get to see where this story goes by the last issue and it isn't just swept under the rug.

this is the product of a writer knowing hes canceled and that everyone hates the book, hense all the madness.

id love a shot at writing a book in the ultimate line, with some serious effort the ultimate universe could be a great place again.

This sounds bizarre, not necessarily in a good way for me. I can't justify paying cover price for them now, but I may be curious enough to look into it later if it goes cheap.

How can you be sure that they're not already being flooded with angry letters?

Have you written one?

I thought this was fantastic, I was cracking up the entire time and that ending was spooky. After all the ultimate universe has been through I thought it worked perfectly character wise. I wish the art were better but coulda been worse.

@v_scarlotte_rose: Actually I did, but I do not expect anything to come of it. To me this shows a large hypocrisy in comic book fans. People scream bloody murder when a character is changed but when something like genital mutilation is used for nothing but shock value people either turn a blind eye or say how hardcore it was, this is the stuff you should get pissed off about.

This to me was as bad as the implied rape of Dick Grayson or the cannibalism of Wasp by the Blob. All where cheap attempts to do something grotesques to shock the reader, I suppose when the writer saw how horrible his book was selling he needed something to have this run remembered by, so he choose genital mutilation, when it's impossible to say that the smartest woman in the universe could not think of another option.

....WTF Marvel?

Fialkov trying for a stint writing Guardians of the Galaxy by showing his (alleged) skills with "funny" animals
