Thunderbolts #3 - Unconventional Warfare Review

2

Rulk reveals the Leader's involvement and the team begins to train the rebels.

The Good

Previously, I was asking myself "why can't this team just go for a direct assault?" This powerhouse group could surely handle a dictator and his fodder forces, right? Well, writer Daniel Way gives more life to this story by re-introducing a villain and explaining why this matter is more complex than it seems. It's certainly a slight improvement in the story.

Deadpool's the highlight here, but even that comes as a double-edged sword. He has some decent zingers (yeah, I said zingers) and I will admit that the final page gave me a solid laugh. On the flip side, though, Deadpool feels painfully stupid at times and comes off as more obnoxious than usual.

Steve Dillon's art really is hit or miss. I've grown to like how he illustrates Frank Castle and his action sequences are done well, although they tend to feel stationary.

The Bad

I'm not going to lie, this series is a huge disappointment for me. This roster has so much potential but this story barely has any intrigue and feels completely uninspired. It essentially has the feel of an okay '90s action movie.

There's a few pages of Deadpool and Rulk talking in a red shipping container. Yup, that's right. Two prominently red characters surrounded by even more red. It's a freaking overdose of the color for your eyes and incredibly jarring. It's no fun shifting your sight from an all red image to white or yellow dialogue boxes and then back again. To make matters worse, there's four whole pages of this. SO. MUCH. RED.

Hey Flash Thompson, I'm not sure if you forgot or something, but you can use the symbiote as camouflage. You've actually done it plenty of times over in your ongoing, so I'm not sure why you'd pick that Dick Tracy-esque disguise over an advanced alien costume that can make you look like virtually anything.

Minor point here, but I think it's worth discussing. The rebels are using guns that fire green projectiles. The bad guys are using guns that seem to fire traditional bullets. So, how does the rebel die with a green projectile to his head? Sure, it looks cool, but it makes no sense.

Steve Dillon's faces are waaaay too similar in some cases. To be blunt, Elektra looks like Frank Castle in drag (even with that ridiculously large chest) and Rulk looks like hulked out Frank.

The Verdict

THUNDERBOLTS pretty much feels like Marvel NOW!'s unsuccessful attempt at duplicating The Expendables. It's a roster of badass characters you love, there's an able dose of action but the story leaves a lot to be desired. Except here, the action isn't even that grand or even energetic. Because I'm such a fanboy of these characters, I'm going to see this story arc through to the end, despite my better judgement. I sincerely hope it improves or else this is a title I'll absolutely drop. I want to like THUNDERBOLTS and was so excited for it, but man, it's just a letdown.

A bit off topic, but did anyone else feel like Deadpool and Rulk were hanging out with Sinestro?

That's who it thought it was on the cover!

Gregg do you think this book will improve when Phil Noto joins?

I was really stoked for this series, but gave up after the first issue. With all the potential it has, it's just pooping a hole thorough the bed. The art is terrible, the characters are boring, and it's just a wasted idea.

That comparison to The Expendables was interesting. I may have to check out an issue or two now.

I am a huge fan of these characters. Some of my favorite Marvel characters are on this team but this book just sounds awful. I haven't heard anything good really. I wish they would have put someone other than Daniel Way on this book...and I have said it before but I will say it again, I cannot even finish an issue with Steve Dillon's art inside.

This series has dropped a star each issue 4,3 and now 2 is a 1 coming next?

Posted by Cafeterialoca

I'm sorry, but if you didn't expect this from that creative team, you kinda earned the disappointment.

Pre-Marvel NOW Thunderbolts now and forever!!!

I agree. Steve Dillon is one of my least favorite mainstream comic artists. Good thing he's leaving with issue #6, so that means I'm not dropping this until at least issue 7. Right now I am tolerating it.

Posted by neiliusprime

thinking about skipping the rest of the issues of Thunderbolts for the next story arc. And yeah, I too don't like Steve Dillon's art...

That right that's a Celestrial making a loser sign!!!

Oh Hey Daniel Way, Punisher called he said he wants Greg Rucka back......

Posted by The Mighty Monarch

Ugh, this Punisher is NOTHING like the Rucka Punisher I've grown to love.

A RED one know less

I'm mostly a fan of Marvel NOW!, but Thunderbolts has long been my favorite comic book. I loved the concept, the characters, and especially Kev Walker's art over the last few story arcs. This book shouldn't even have the Thunderbolts title. It's not the Thunderbolts, and it has ruined my favorite book at Marvel.

I'm glad, I'm not the only one who noticed this.

So far this has been a quite mediocre book in my opinion. The characters are generally wasted by barely ding anything and I never really liked Dillon's art in superhero books. He's great for a Punisher book, with the whole "ugly underworld" thing, but I honestly think he should be kept away from the spandex folk.

"To be blunt, Elektra looks like Frank Castle in drag" - This made me laugh my ass off. As far as faces go, there are a few artist who fall into the same problem, like Romita Jr (whose art I actually like, but the only way to differentiate between his version of, say Tony Stark, Reed Richards and Dr. Strange is tony has a goatee, Strange has a goatee and grey sideburns and Reed only has the grey sideburns) and Greg Land (who's a whole other can of worms).

Doubt it, when the writing is this poor writing

Posted by Gonzo33

I liked Daniel way's Deadpool run but the Thunderbolts has really been lacking. I don't think he can handle a team book (or at least not this team).

Posted by Pacperson

You Mean Way writes Deadpool as a complete moron? Shocker =/ He was written so well in his run.... =/ when is this getting canned?

Posted by TheAmazingImmortalMan

I want to like this title but the art is pretty bad never really liked Dillon's art though, but this team is full of badasses so I'm gonna stick with it for the next few issues twith hopes that it gets better.

GARBAGE GARBAGE GARBAGE

Someone tweet to Way and tell him how bad this book sucks and how he ruined all these characters.

Posted by Tolliver_Trask

I know it won't happen, but I'd love if Marvel tapped someone like Jason Pearson to be the artist for Thunderbolts. I think his style would be absolutely perfect for this book.

I think I'll be dropping this series. I gotta agree on the Electra part, haha.

Posted by jsphsmth

Out of all the announced Marvel Now series, this was the one I was most excited about. Too bad it isn't living up to its potential. Maybe I should go buy the series I was least excited about.

Posted by VictorVonDoom_1

When my friend told me about this roster I was so excited about it... Until, I saw the art and the storyline so far just seems boring. I love the team, but, I can't read this.

Posted by SavageDragon

Well I liked the last issue, it was alright and kinda fun. This issue was...alright decent at best. Ive been reading since issue 1 and this may be getting dropped. Like Gregg i will give it till the end of the story arc. I really dont have problems with Dillons art, hes not my favorite I really dont think its that bad. Man I want this book to be better. Hopefully the end of this story gets awesome...fast.

@broo1232: Hopefully, so that a new creative team will join.

This book is actually alot worst than the Katzman made it seem, this is a 1 star issue in my opinion and the comic book store should give you a refound if you buy this lol

Posted by k4tzm4n

@zackattack529: I actually contemplated for awhile between a 2 and a 1. I then decided I would reserve a 1 for something offensively bad, where-as this is just flat out bad with a few okay moments (few at best...).

X35 warned me about this, i didn't read the first 3 issues but as HUGE leader fan i gave way a chance, but hell......this is by far the worst thing i've read yet, horrible ......simply horrible .......thank you K4tzm4n for such a good review of this horrible thing.

You're welcome.  I was very close to giving this issue a 1.  I really hope the next issue is a vast improvement, but I can't say I'm very hopeful.

The problem is not the roster, it's definetely the writer and the artist. Like Gregg said this team has a lot of potential, like an Expendables plot this should be simple and quickly to action and till now i haven't see nothing special.

@k4tzm4n: ^__^

honestly it's the only one i picked up, X35 warned me that i shouldn't , and the firts two issues i ignored, i ONLY got this thanks to Leader, but i'll never pick this book up again until way leaves.

@InnerVenom123: ROFL that is hilarious.

I am so glad I dropped this series after issue 2. Has so much potential to be as awesome and complex as Uncanny X-force and yet it falls flat on its face due to poor writing and mediocre art.

Posted by ILLO_29

I really wanted to dig this book, but so far I can't. The story just ins't there and the book suffers from a condition known as "cover shock". The interior art is just so far separated from the art on the cover that it leaves me disappointed. I mean don't get me wrong I know that continuing the art style used for the cover over into the interior art probably would not that work well but come on we can do better then this. I think I'm dropping it and replacing it with secret avengers #1 next month.

Rucka and Checcetto have set the bar very high for Punisher. They are going to be hard to compete with. I went into Thunderbolts with a VERY bad attitude but have found parts of it to be entertaining (mostly involving the Punisher).

Posted by SupremeHyperion

they need to get into the action and death missions this group should be partaking in. get rid of deadpool and stop trying to make this a witty book when it should be a violent and dark title.

Posted by Liz_Lixx

Also, obviously I am in the minority, but I like Steve Dillon. I like the stuff he did on Punisher with Garth Ennis. Oh, and Preacher. I said PREACHER, people!!!
