The Rocketeer: Hollywood Horror #1 - The Rocketeer vs. the Hollywood Horror

1

The Rocketeer blazes through Hollywood in a pulpish, sci-fish, nightmare of a book.

The Good

About the only thing I liked in this book was J Bone's art. The first two pages are fantastic. The open scene, that features the Rocketeer, is a fantastic set up of this world and paced nicely. The page layouts are very cool, and Bone's art really shines here. Overall, throughout the issue, Bone does wonders with inking over everything else.

The James White and Walter Simonson variant covers are both awesome.

The Bad

I'm completely unsure who this book is appealing to. Is it just to Rocketeer fans? I'm aware who this character is. I've read a comic here and there. But as someone interested in the character, that isn't a die hard fan, I felt completely alienated. It felt like I just walked into the cool kid party and the needle on the record scratched. Everyone stops what their doing and just stares at me, waiting for me to leave. I'm not sure if this book is for kids, adults, or just a mixture in between.

It's another comic with Cthulhu elements in it. Yep, the Rocketeer has to face off against a mad scientist who has summoned his "Dark lord," which is floating tentacles. Technically, it's not Cthulhu, but it might as well be. The mixture of Rocketeer and mystic floating tentacles are not working for me here, not one bit.

This book hits up way too many cliches for my liking. We have the sassy dame, the mad scientist, the good guy who can't commit to his girl because he's secretly a super-hero. On top of that, the dialogue is extremely tongue and cheek and incredibly cheesy. Maybe I'm missing something, but I truly don't understand this book. What is it? Who is it for? It has too many tones, ideas, and styles slammed into one uninteresting story.

The Verdict

There's a question going through my mind, over and over again: "Will Rocketeer fans like this?" My opinion is one thing, but will the fanbase this is geared toward enjoy this? I read a lot of Doctor Who comics and a few of them are pretty bad. However, Whovians will like them. It's just the general public that won't. With ROCKETEER: HOLLYWOOD HORROR, I really don't think Rocketeer fans will like this.

This book is too weird and out there. Sure, J Bone does some nice work on the book, but that's not going to save this book.

Overall, I do not recommend this issue.

I think you missed the point of a Rocketeer book entirely.

This book was awesome as hell, if you like/love The Rocketeer then you'll LIKE/LOVE this book.

IDW has done nothing but put out solid books with fun stories, this is no exception.

My brain really can't comprehend this 1* review lol.

9.6 on IGN. Comic Vine continues to be the Bizarro comic book review site.

So...

Comicvine gives this issue a 1/5

IGN gives this issue a 9.6/10

Is there something I'm missing? I know that Comicvine and IGN almost always have opposite review scores, but I've never seen one this jarring. This is almost as stark of a contrast of review scores as you can get.

haha I was gonna post this. I was shocked.

@inferiorego: A typo at the end, " Sure, J Bone does some nice work on the book, but that's going to save this book." probably meant to be, not going to save this book.

Still a nice succinct review that tells me all I need to know, great work!

Thanks. I'm a pro at typos!

I read his review, and everything he likes about it is everything I hate about it.

It's weird because I look at IGNs scores and I 100% agree with them, except for this one.

Oh well.

@JakeN7: I've found recently that basing my buying habits on going the opposite way of conmicvine's review scores has served me well

I will be getting this comic. I read comics, so I kind of have to enjoy a little cheesy cliches, right?

I'm glad to hear J. Bone's art did not contribute to the 1 star rating. I think he is a brilliant artists who doesn't get nearly enough high profile projects. Hopefully this book will not hurt his career in the future.

I really really loved this issue. Yeah the art is a bit cartoonish and the narration that of a cheesy 30s/40s cartoon. All in all though I feel that it does encompass the 1930s/40s feel in that respect. I liked how Betty showed a feminist flair to Cliff. Though the art is a bit of throw off and the story is still kind of dark and though Cliched. There is room for some great story telling. I personally really liked the art. Its a bit Saturday morning Cartoonish but somehow with Cliff and co, it works. Definitely a good read and worth picking up.

I do see your points, but this is my opinion. I advise someone to either bum it, or read a few pages before committing. Happy reading :)

I think this is the 1st 1 star review i've seen. (Yeah i know you generally only review the books you love, i'm just saying) Congratulations Rocketeer, you seem like a cool character too. It's just too bad you didn't have a good enough writer for this issue.

Heck, it's rare for anyone here to give something below 3 stars!

It stinks that the Rocketeer would actually have a negative review BUT I say this as a fan of the character, and not as any type of complaint against the reviewer.

That said, I appreciate an honest review. Though I've not read this I can understand why this comic would not be appealing given the points made here and that helps. Good review.
