The Black Bat #7 Review

4

After last issue's explosive ending, what's next for the Black Bat?

The Good

Throughout this series, the hunt has been on for a suitcase bomb that threatened the city. As the Black Bat discovered its location, he was too late to prevent it from being detonated. Brian Buccellato gives us something we don't often see - the aftermath.

Too many times in comics we witness some big horrific event but the city always manges to rebuild and get back on its feet in apparently no time. Seeing the reaction, repercussions and blame dealt with is an interesting angle. The hero can't always win and Buccellato shows us what it's like.

The important thing to realize is just because the bomb went off, the story is far from over. As Black Bat tries to deal with his failure, things start to turn that will give him other opportunities. There's also a big decision and a cliffhanger at the end to keep you on the edge of your seat.

The Bad

Some parts of the story take place too quickly. We don't necessarily need to dwell on the aftermath but it's unclear what everyone was doing. The confrontation at the end felt like it happened too easily.

I dig the art but even with some time going by, we see Carol still wearing an outfit that resembles Jill Valentine in Resident Evil 3 (video game). Is she constantly ready to go to a party or something? Even at the end, out on the field, she's still wearing the outfit.

The Verdict

Brian Buccellato has taken off the kid gloves with this series. Last issue ended with a bomb going off. As you would expect, there were casualties. Big destructive scenes are common in comics but Buccellato shows the results of what happened rather than have everyone happily move on. The story remains gritty with a more realistic take. The Black Bat may have suffered a blow but he's back on his feet and ready to kick ass in a big way.

I'm very interested in this series. Sucks that the trade isn't out until march.
