The Amazing Spider-Man #700 - Dying Wish: Suicide Run; Spider-Dreams; Date Night

4

The final issue after fifty years. This issue marks the historic moment when everything changes. It's also a celebration for the series.

The Good

Comic books are about telling stories. That is what Dan Slott has been doing. Even though spoilers have been flying around for the last couple weeks, I still won't go right out and say what's happened. There is something great in reading the events that occur here for yourself in the actual comic.

There has been a lot of outrage over what happens here from long time Spider-Man fans. I like to think that I am a long time fan as well. The key here is Dan Slott is telling a story about a fictional character. As he has even mentioned, nothing in comic books is forever. There's always a backdoor that can revert changes. Of course there is one here. This is a way for us to see a different kind of story. It's been fifty years and the time has come to try something a little different.

The story picks up on the battle between Spider-Man and the dying Doc Ock. We know there's a lot at stake for Peter Parker. It's a blast seeing both men, both equally desperate, use their ingenuity to try to outthink the other. This is a different type of fight. The two have clashed numerous times over the years but those have usually been physical battles. This is where we see how intelligent they each are.

Having Spider-Man's supporting cast present for most of the story further drives home what this battle's outcome means for Peter Parker. We see that it's not just Peter's life at risk but the others as well as they are brought into the middle to be used as pawns.

Humberto Ramos does a great job capturing and depicting this final story. There is so much going on and so many characters present. It truly is a wonderful send off to the series we've been reading all these years. Seeing the events unfold with the edge we have in knowing what's really going on is fun as we see Spider-Man interact with friends and foes. This is just giving us a taste of what's to come.

As for the ending of the main story...I'll get to that in a moment.

This is an oversized final issue. To mark the occasion, we do get a variant cover gallery. Whether you're a fan of variant covers or not, it's great to get the chance to actually see the great pieces of art produced. Chances are you won't get the chance to actually see them in person as variant covers tend to sell at a higher price.

J.M. DeMatteis and Giuseppe Camuncoli give us a story that begins "Once upon a time...in the near future." Future stories are to be taken with a grain of salt but this one will make you wonder about the possibilities.

Jen Van Meter and Stephanie Buscema also have a fun story involving Spider-Man and Black Cat, with more of a focus on Felicia.

Adding to the issue are some preview pages for SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, AVENGING SPIDER-MAN, MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE, VENOM and SCARLET SPIDER. There's also one of those thumbnail galleries of all 700 covers. Of course we get an extra long letters column featuring Stan Lee answering questions as well.

The Bad

Did I love the ending of the battle? As a longtime Spider-Man fan, of course not. But that isn't to say that it was a bad story. As the battle progresses, the ending is almost sudden. We know what's coming but it's a matter of how it happens. The shift does make sense but just felt a little abrupt. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the final speech in the story.

The extras are nice. Are they necessary? Not really. They're great to see. The DeMatteis story makes you wonder but almost feels like what we saw in the anniversary issue (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #692). The Black Cat story was fun and had great art but wasn't necessary for a final issue. Maybe it makes sense because it wouldn't fit in after the events of this issue.

The Verdict

The final issue of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has arrived. Spider-Man as we know him is no more. Comic book readers will be the first to complain if we keep getting the same old stories but if a major change is done to our beloved characters, we'll also complain. This is a chance to see something different. Dan Slott has cooked up a crazy idea and now we'll get to see what happens next in SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN. I am on board to see how this plays out. I'll be reading to see what the next chapter holds for Spider-Man and the supporting cast. Of course Spider-Man fans will not be pleased with what happens. But we do see a great battle that really shows what Spider-Man is about. He is one of the greatest heroes and this issue is a testament to that. It's a fight fought on a different sort of battlefield. This is a story you'll remember for years to come. It does change everything.

Will this change last forever? Of course not. At least, as a veteran comic book reader, I'd like to think that. The main thing to remember is this is just a story. It's a comic book story. There are always ways to change things and bring back any status quo fans might miss.

The oversized issues contains a couple other fun and interesting stories along with a look at the variant covers, some preview pages and Stan Lee answering letters.

It's been a great 700 issues. It's the end of the series. Is it the last we've seen of the AMAZING Spider-Man? I seriously doubt it. This issue is a piece of history since you likely won't see another Marvel issue 700 due to all the re-numbering. Enjoy the coming ride to see what else Dan Slott has coming. He's been doing a great job since Big Time (and before). Next month we'll get to see if his gamble in writing this story pays off.

Regardless of the content of the comic, I'll say this: I love all the covers for this issue. They're all great in their own way.

I really liked this issue, like we all knew that Peter Parker wasn't going to be the Superior Spider-Man, but I was never sure how that was going to happen and I was surprised by the ending and I certainly will be reading Superior Spider-Man.

Still the only thing I'm dissapointed about in this issue is there where no other legendary villains in this issue. No Gobby, no Venom, none of that. This is the end of Spider-Man...

the last 3 pages slott pulled them right out of his @ss. they made no sense. they werent consistent with what ock has been doing so far. sudden change of heart. and it was really a pathetic way to kill off a character as big as spidey. not for one sec did i think spidey was going to get back in his body or have a glimmer of hope that the situation was going to be affected in a good way. the whole issue was dan slott saying over and over: im killiing spidey neah neah neah neah.

@StMichalofWilson: We know from 698 that something's up with Norman since he woke up from his coma and disappeared. No one's really said anything about that since they've been focused on Spidey and Ock. So I imagine we'll have to wait until SUPERIOR to see what's next.

I can't and never will accept this.

There are many other ways he could have done this without killing off Peter, and making me nauseous over what might happen with Mary Jane.

for instance causing Peter an injury that causes him to hang up his costume and pass on the mantel to someone he deemed worthy and mentoring the person.

But to do this this, I say again

I CAN'T AND NEVER WILL ACCEPT THIS

@theTimeStreamer: Spoiler blocks please for those that have not read the issue or have not been keeping up with spoilers.

A re-posting of a response in spoiler filled thread on the Spidey forums:

As much as I hate to say it...it's not like that. With Peter's final act, he basically merged his memories with Ock's. Before it was like Ock had access to Peter's memories -- we could see they did not fully affect him as he was willing to harm Peter's loved ones to ensure that he won, but Peter ensured that Ock had to basically feel and live those memories as if he (Otto) actually lived it all. Ock didn't want that (that was pretty plainly shown in the story), but once complete with the process, you could see he was changed by it, and not just some Christmas revelation of how he was bad all these years and now needs to be good -- this was very much a forced change on him brought about by Peter.

At least it wasn't what I feared it would be -- Ock secretly wanting to be a good guy and just getting Peter's blessing based off of him making a promise. This isn't Ock as we knew him, and this isn't Peter Parker. This is basically an Otto Octavius that was forced to live and go through Peter's life -- his good times, bad times, and every bit of experience that made Peter what he was. It wasn't a simple revelation on his part realizing that he was bad all these years and that he should be good now because that was what the writer wanted for the story. It was a fundamental rewriting of the core of who Octavius was.

Now, this does not mean that we basically have Otto running around and acting like Peter -- we know we are getting a darker version of Spidey, we can also see this difference in his final speech, and a lot of this is going to stem from the fact that it is still not truly Peter, and Otto will most likely have to reconcile who he was with who is now. He didn't want this change, he didn't want this responsibility, but Peter is now a big part of the core of who he is -- hence he will probably have what he believes to be true blue feelings for Mary Jane -- since he has now lived Peter's romance with her and felt the feelings Peter had for her.

At first, seeing the one or two scans and breakdown someone had for the story, I hated it. I entirely felt where you were coming from, but I forced myself to go ahead and read 700, to give it a chance. I am glad I did. Am I happy that Peter is gone for the moment? Absolutely not...but I am now more willing to give Superior Spider-Man a chance after having fully read the issue and having gained a true understanding of what happened and not just believing every little internet rant I have read.

Peter will be back eventually. I truly believe that. For now, I am willing to let him go to have his well earned rest, and at least give this new character a chance for a bit. I can be patient and wait for Peter's eventual return.

Regardless, I am glad I at least read the issue and didn't just believe the random internet rants. For the most part, I agree with the review here. Good work.

@theTimeStreamer: I couldn't possibly agree more. It seems to me that we're marching into the "golden era of mediocrity", where bad and awful ideas will rule for many many dark years to come. Having a weird idea doesn't mean it's a good one! If that were the case, then we could all become writers. Here's my idea! After SSM, we can have the Inferior Spiderman. After a horrible plot device, Aunt May takes the mantle of Spiderman and decides to clean literally the hood in no time, messing with the evildoers that prefer dirty streets. Many things can happen...

There's nothing great about Dan Slott using Otto as a self-insert and then turning him into Spider-Man.

Before I say anything else I want to state for the record that peter parker has been dead ever since OMD. No one has known what to do with this character since then and the few times there was hope for something good then quesada would come in and squash it with OMT. So people can talk about how the character died in 700 but for all intents and purposes he's been dead for years now, least the character I knew.

Now that I have that out of the way all I have to say is thank you marvel! I actually mean that sadly. The character of peter parker was beyond saving with the directions they were taking him in and in my opinion needed to be dead for a while till someone could actually figure out something creative to do with the character. Personally I'm still hoping they can reel back JMS but i know I'm dreaming there.

The other reason I'm thankful that marvel has finally killed peter parker is that I don't have to care anymore about the spiderman book! I don't have to look up what's happened to character anymore, I don't have to complain about OMD, OMT and the OMBULLSh*T that's been done about the character. I don't even have to complain about how marvel doesn't understand the basics of their own freaking character anymore! Sure I'm sad it's come down to this but now I can at least say that Marvel and I have broken up in terms of our spidey relationship. In a way its like finally getting rid of that ex girlfriend that kept making your life a living hell.

So yeah thank you Marvel!

Speaking from personal views and the few local people I know, I think the reason there is so much hate is because Slott acts like this is 1. The most radical thing that has ever happened to Peter (I think ASM 100, Gwen Stacy and the Clone Saga among others might have some things to say about that), 2. This is the ABSOLUTE END of Peter as Spidey FOREVER!!! (heard that before, several times...) and 3. That Marvel is using this as a springboard to yet another #1 issue merely because of a big story or creator change. Anyone who has been reading Spider-Man as long as I have can't possibly think Slott is a good writer. He's merely rehashed old stories and put his own spin on them, rather than come up with original ideas. As much as JMS's run makes me sick to my stomach, at least he had original ideas. The ending (for now) of this this series and all the hype over it is everything that is wrong with Marvel today: namely "HYPE HYPE HYPE and oh, I guess there is some story there as well, I dunno."

And G-Man, you know the next time Marvel gets a collective 700 or 800 issue they will revert back to that numbering and proclaim ANNIVERSARY!!!/MILESTONE!!! followed by a new number 1 issue 6 months later. History has taught us little else about this company the past 10 years.

I don't get it, "The Bad" didn't really say what was wrong. Is this 4/5 because of the ending reveal? I would give it 4/5 because the battle wasn't as interesting as I'd hoped. It almost dragged a little bit. Still, it shouldn't lose a star just because we don't like what's happening to Spider-man--we haven't read Superior Spider-man #1!

I can't really bring myself to care that much about this story, because Marvel long ago killed my love for Spider-Man. This is just the latest in a long line of poorly-conceived and poorly-executed crap, another "big event" to keep Spidey in the spotlight, and all it does is push him even farther away from what made him so beloved in the first place. This isn't edgy, or cool, or meta... this is lazy, cynical story-telling at its worst. I wasted time and energy on this drivel, but at least I didn't waste my money... and I won't waste any in the future.

I may not be HAPPY about losing Pete, but I am happy to see a new chapter in the Spider-Man saga. Slott is clearly a master at creating a complex story, and none of us know where this is going to lead. Have some faith, and enjoy the vibrance and refreshing ideas that he has obviously been winding into the story since ASM 600.

He isn't one or two steps ahead. He isn't just writing each issue with disregard to others. He probably has a plan for every issue he will write on his desk right now. I have faith in Slott.

Regardless of what anyone says, the book is going to sell incredibly well (at least for the first arc), so just stay on board for a while. Ride the wave.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how they thought this was a good idea. We already have a darker Spider-man in Houston as the Scarlet Spider, not to mention there is now no place in comics that we can go to get a fix of Peter Parker. If Slott has run out of ideas for Peter, then find a writer who has some. If Slott really wants to tell the story of a darker Otto/Peter amalgam then have him write an elseworld where Otto grows up with Peter's life. I read Spider-man because he is a lighthearted hero who makes wisecracks while still recognizing his responsibility. I get my fill of brooding and darkness from Batman, so I will be passing on Superior Spider-man

Honestly.....I doubt Ock will be around for long. Ben Rilley (did I spell that right? I'm sorry) was supposed to replace Peter at one point and they dropped it. I think that they will try this, see the numbers climb for the first...eh six months or a year, then watch interest and numbers dive afterward. When you have a successful movie that is out and people think "I want to try reading the comics" then see that Spider-man isn't Peter Parker, it creates a disconnect with potential fans. Plus I don't think that long time fans will be buying this. I may try to read Superior just to test the waters, but I don't think I will care for Ock as much as I cared for Peter. We'll see though...

For me the biggest disappointment for ASM 700 is that in the end everything Peter Parker worked for was for nothing. Peter Parker failed and Doc Ock won. And yes I did read Avenging, but honestly to me it still seems like in the end the Hero died and failed while the Villain swooped in stole the Hero's girl then killed him...I read comics (especially ASM) because I like to see the Hero struggle and fight and barely pull through, but still in the end they win because what they're doing is right. And yes I know in reality the Hero doesn't a;ways win...But honestly if I want to see the Villain win I'll just turn on the news...

I always loved Spider-Man and ASM was the book that got me back into comics when I was around 17. There have been good and bad issues over the years (I actually liked JSM's run), but this is the one that makes the inner fanboy in me to unleash it's nerd rage (right after OMD and Ultimatum). I really liked Slott's run on ASM, because he managed to write enjoyable stories after the disappointment of OMD and the ones that followed it. Slott made Peter live up to his potential with his role on the Avengers, FF and Horizon (which I loved since the scientific aspect of Peter was always downplayed) and it was good. Then came 700 and it all went down to hell. When I first read it last week (yes, I couldn't help myself) it felt like Slott just took a dump on everything he built up in the past few years, all just to shock everybody. The ending honestly felt like the biggest F**k You moment in Marvel since Loeb dedicated Ultimatum to Bendis, Millar, etc. And after a week I still feel all that. I want to say I know Peter will be back someday, but I can only hope, because this is not how it should have happened. And I don't think this new status quo can be maintained for long. This is something you do in a mini or as an arc in the ongoing, but not as the base of an ongoing, or at least not one that can last long. This just feels like another way to make way for another #1 issue that well be reverted to 750, or 800 when the time comes, just to cancel it afterward to have another #1 a year later in a new "initiative". The problem is that these kind of cheap tricks alienate readers, not bring in new ones, but that's a completely different discussion.

Long story short: I have to say I really don't like 700 and I kinda lost my faith in Slott and this feels like One More Day 2.0 (with the questionable decisions and the whole fan outrage).

SPOILER

I was really hoping that some third party would get involved and be the new Spider-Man.

There was no surprise. Why did Dan Slott say that issue 700 would mean he'd have to go into hiding? The end game had been visible since 698.

Wait wait wait....... Let me get this straight, you just spent eight dollars to read one of your favorite character gets killed off, and replaced by a guy who looked like John Hodgman?

This is like the 3rd time Peter died I don't see why we should complain. For all we know with the whole "merged memories" It could be Peter thinking he's Otto.

Well, I can't imagine most people will enjoy what happens. I guess it will really depend on the sales of superior. Should be interesting to see the fan rage vs sales numbers.

Well done Slott. If there is anyone who could make me ok with the death of peter parker, it was you. Well done.

Rest in Peace Peter Parker.

SPOILER

I was really hoping that some third party would get involved and be the new Spider-Man.

There was no surprise. Why did Dan Slott say that issue 700 would mean he'd have to go into hiding? The end game had been visible since 698.

I don't think he really meant it, but after what he did, who would blame him

Oh and this as well - he's been receiving death treats...

I truly believe that 99% of the complaints of this issue are because the writer's name is "Dan Slott" and not "Grant Morrison" or "Warren Ellis". This was a masterfully written story that actually connects back to issue 600 and makes complete sense. I don't necessarily like the ending but I respect how well written it was and am enjoying the ride!

I really tried so hard to enjoy this issue as well as Avenging Spider-Man #15.1, but I am sad about the ending. I am interested in this new direction of Superior Spider-Man, but I wish it ended differently....

I gotta say, I saw this coming, I guessed HOW it would happen ever since i first saw the previews with Spidey seeing the Staceys and all them. But I still loved every minute of this issue.

I'd doubt if this arc lasts a full year, before returning to the default, but that is for the best. This was a comic book death that was interesting and seems to serve a wider story.

Oh, and the art was great.

not sure if anyone mentioned it already but did anyone else catch

Uatu Jackson talking about his invention that allows him to talk to ghosts?!! could be slotts back door to get Pete back!!

not really sure how i feel about it all though I've enjoyed slotts run but agree with the majority that this could have been handled a lot better

As you can see, Tony, most of the comments aren't about losing Pete, they're about poor storytelling, pacing and just plain ludicrous faux science. It's insulting to the intelligence of the reader. This will soon be forgotten in another of many missteps in the Spider-Man franchise over the last 15-20 years. At least we've had Ultimate Spider-Man
