The Amazing Spider-Man #700 - Dying Wish: Suicide Run; Spider-Dreams; Date Night

4

The final issue after fifty years. This issue marks the historic moment when everything changes. It's also a celebration for the series.

The Good

Comic books are about telling stories. That is what Dan Slott has been doing. Even though spoilers have been flying around for the last couple weeks, I still won't go right out and say what's happened. There is something great in reading the events that occur here for yourself in the actual comic.

There has been a lot of outrage over what happens here from long time Spider-Man fans. I like to think that I am a long time fan as well. The key here is Dan Slott is telling a story about a fictional character. As he has even mentioned, nothing in comic books is forever. There's always a backdoor that can revert changes. Of course there is one here. This is a way for us to see a different kind of story. It's been fifty years and the time has come to try something a little different.

The story picks up on the battle between Spider-Man and the dying Doc Ock. We know there's a lot at stake for Peter Parker. It's a blast seeing both men, both equally desperate, use their ingenuity to try to outthink the other. This is a different type of fight. The two have clashed numerous times over the years but those have usually been physical battles. This is where we see how intelligent they each are.

Having Spider-Man's supporting cast present for most of the story further drives home what this battle's outcome means for Peter Parker. We see that it's not just Peter's life at risk but the others as well as they are brought into the middle to be used as pawns.

Humberto Ramos does a great job capturing and depicting this final story. There is so much going on and so many characters present. It truly is a wonderful send off to the series we've been reading all these years. Seeing the events unfold with the edge we have in knowing what's really going on is fun as we see Spider-Man interact with friends and foes. This is just giving us a taste of what's to come.

As for the ending of the main story...I'll get to that in a moment.

This is an oversized final issue. To mark the occasion, we do get a variant cover gallery. Whether you're a fan of variant covers or not, it's great to get the chance to actually see the great pieces of art produced. Chances are you won't get the chance to actually see them in person as variant covers tend to sell at a higher price.

J.M. DeMatteis and Giuseppe Camuncoli give us a story that begins "Once upon a time...in the near future." Future stories are to be taken with a grain of salt but this one will make you wonder about the possibilities.

Jen Van Meter and Stephanie Buscema also have a fun story involving Spider-Man and Black Cat, with more of a focus on Felicia.

Adding to the issue are some preview pages for SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, AVENGING SPIDER-MAN, MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE, VENOM and SCARLET SPIDER. There's also one of those thumbnail galleries of all 700 covers. Of course we get an extra long letters column featuring Stan Lee answering questions as well.

The Bad

Did I love the ending of the battle? As a longtime Spider-Man fan, of course not. But that isn't to say that it was a bad story. As the battle progresses, the ending is almost sudden. We know what's coming but it's a matter of how it happens. The shift does make sense but just felt a little abrupt. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the final speech in the story.

The extras are nice. Are they necessary? Not really. They're great to see. The DeMatteis story makes you wonder but almost feels like what we saw in the anniversary issue (AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #692). The Black Cat story was fun and had great art but wasn't necessary for a final issue. Maybe it makes sense because it wouldn't fit in after the events of this issue.

The Verdict

The final issue of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN has arrived. Spider-Man as we know him is no more. Comic book readers will be the first to complain if we keep getting the same old stories but if a major change is done to our beloved characters, we'll also complain. This is a chance to see something different. Dan Slott has cooked up a crazy idea and now we'll get to see what happens next in SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN. I am on board to see how this plays out. I'll be reading to see what the next chapter holds for Spider-Man and the supporting cast. Of course Spider-Man fans will not be pleased with what happens. But we do see a great battle that really shows what Spider-Man is about. He is one of the greatest heroes and this issue is a testament to that. It's a fight fought on a different sort of battlefield. This is a story you'll remember for years to come. It does change everything.

Will this change last forever? Of course not. At least, as a veteran comic book reader, I'd like to think that. The main thing to remember is this is just a story. It's a comic book story. There are always ways to change things and bring back any status quo fans might miss.

The oversized issues contains a couple other fun and interesting stories along with a look at the variant covers, some preview pages and Stan Lee answering letters.

It's been a great 700 issues. It's the end of the series. Is it the last we've seen of the AMAZING Spider-Man? I seriously doubt it. This issue is a piece of history since you likely won't see another Marvel issue 700 due to all the re-numbering. Enjoy the coming ride to see what else Dan Slott has coming. He's been doing a great job since Big Time (and before). Next month we'll get to see if his gamble in writing this story pays off.

@animehunter: yeah, and no. I feel that Peter Parker can only be Spider-Man. Wouldn't want this to be like Batman. From all the hate comments, I bet all of u guys will be getting SSM to see how/long this might last. Like any major change in comics, especially Marvel, this won't last long.

not really sure how i feel about it all though I've enjoyed slotts run but agree with the majority that this could have been handled a lot better

I picked it up, but didn't process it until my second reading

It's easy to compare this Parker Death to Parker's Ultimate Death. There, the death was earned. Ultimate Parker saved his family, fought to the bitter end, and was welcomed into death by Uncle Ben. The new Spidey had to earn his Spidey-cred and has. Overall, the story has been paced well and hit all the right notes.

Here, it was rushed. A lot of it seemed hypocritical. None of it was earned and it just felt like Slott was saying, "Screw you. I'll do what I want and get the story to fit my next book." The fact that Parker essentially gave up was so far off his characterization that I would've stopped reading had it not been so close to the end. Slott really screwed the pooch here.

What bugs me is he didn't get the heroes glory, he went out and fought to the bitter end, and no one even knows he did it. And one of the few times, hell the ONLY time J.J. praised him, was when doc ock was in his body. Peter fought in a dying body to protect his loved ones while they were ALL against him. Maybe that's the point of the issue, peter does what's right even when the odds are against him, hell that's what all his stories are about, fine, but then there was that one scene where they actually show him in pretty much heaven, happy, uncle ben tells him all he has to do is this one last thing and he can come home, he does it and that's his reward, then what? all thes people saying his death won't last what happens then, his soul gets put back into his body? his reward was temporary. He seemed like he wanted to just rest in peace after this one final act but they are going to thrust him back into the world that was against him?

The whole thing just seemed disrespectful to me,

"Not only will no one know what you did for them, I will take over where you left off, AND BE BETTER AT IT, I WILL BE BETTER THAN YOU!" After all the sh!t peter deals with that's how he goes down? I know some people hated the way ultimate peter died, but damn at least that guy got a heroes welcome.

What an absolute "F** You" to any type of Spider-Man fan.

So Doctor Octopus becomes the new Spidey in Parker's body? A villain is just supposed to replace Peter Parker? What an absolute load. I can understand if someone became a new Spider-Man entirely (hence, the Ultimate universe), but Doc Ock possessing Spider-Man's body while COMPLETELY SLAPPING AWAY PETER OUT OF THE BLUE?! What a horrible idea. This is such an awful move on Marvel's part, it's actually worse than One More Day. Yes, WORSE THAN ONE MORE DAY!!!

And the worst part? Not only does Peter Parker die in someone else's body, but since no one else knows it's him, he's surrounded by civilians who are saying good riddance. There's no dramatic crying or even remorse. Nobody's sad that he's gone, or even know's that he's gone. Parker has been a hero for decades, and in his last moments, how do people react in the end? CIVILIANS WANT HIM DEAD!!!

What kind of pigsh** story is this? There is no, and I mean NO excuse in the universe to make up for this udder tragedy of a comic. I've heard that Dan Slott is even receiving death threats for this comic, and honestly, I'm not surprised. I could stomach OMD and BND, but THIS?! I feel like Marvel stabbed me in the back with a rusted screwdriver. I will never, EVER forgive Slott, or Marvel for that matter, for dishing out this awful, contrived, depressing, mean-spirited, overall BULLSH** excuse of a comic.

Bring Peter Parker back, Marvel. Now.

Agreed. My biggest complaint with the whole thing is just how disrespectful all of this was to the character. It feels like Slott just took a massive dump on him and presented it to his fans for them to applaud it.

They keep saying "This is a new chapter for spider-man" but for me it was more about the character Peter Parker you cant just put someone else under the mask and just expect us to accept it so easily without Peter spider-man just isnt Spider-man.

This is the dumbest story idea I've ever heard. It'll go down as another OMIT storyline that'll revert and everyone will want to forget.

The issue was great but I agree that the end of the battle was sort of unsatisfying. I think even after reading it I have the same problem with Spider-Man that I always have which is I just don't like his fighting style. Superior Spider-Man could be an interesting change from an action standpoint but I'm not completely sold on getting back into Spidey comics.

Look folks, I'm in favor of changes in the world of comics, I am now against changes that superheroes and still fuck the guy mocks the fans of both the old as the new generation. As stated above have already done this with Ben Relly failed and what makes you think it will be different now?! A Spiderman more violent will not bring back the enthusiasm we had before the clone saga, should I resaltar that was where the universe spiderman fell and rose neck more, all for Marvel bill (very) little money above.

What is interesting is that they do shit like this to change the hero by another unknown without considering the fans, but they never changed the context of Peter Parker permanently, for example, the fact that he was and still is adult fucking and acting like an amateur hero, considering that he is no longer a teen hero. Should are more mature and more experienced oh yes deserves the title more than spiderman, but go figure Marvel.

But to make more money and sell more, or as she says that to attract more fans, dry the wave of the moment, ie all good and honorable heroes must die villains and psychopaths should replace them getting cooler and fun.

One thing is certain, I boicotei everything related to Spider-Man, I'll never buy or read Scans and his tendency is to do the same with the magazines Marvels!

As a LONG time Spider-Man I was not happy by how the story ended. However, it was a good story. I personally wish it would have taken a different route though. Especially in the beginning of the issue where Uncle Ben tells Peter it's not his time, I didn't think his "time" would only be a few moments later. It is disappointing but I am glad I was able to avoid it being spoiled for me before reading it myself. Not easy to do these days. I will stay on to see what Dan Slott has in store for the Superior Spider-Man but I will miss Peter Parker (until his return, hopefully.)

The end just feels wrong. This is NO WAY to kill a hero like Peter. If, and only if, you decide to kill him, it has to in a over the top act of bravery. My childhood just took a serious beating, and Peter's name has been dragged through the mud. I just can't wrap my head around the idea of someone saying "Yep, that's a good story. Let's make it happen.".

I'm honestly hoping that this is just a plot that ends in Superior Spider-Man #2 when the real Peter comes back to his body and finally gets back together with MJ (judging from the cover). Marvel characters always find a way to come, so it better happen, and fast.

Peter though managed to make Otto feel his life to turn him into Spider-Man rather than let him be Doc Ock in his body. His goal was to stop Doc Ock from remaining a monster in his body and he succeeded. Now Doc Ock will be Spider-Man.

People seem to be hating because of how it ended but let's not forget this is Dan Slott we're talking about. He started this all in #600 and has been planting seeds ever since. What happened here may play out in the future and be amazing.

I've kept quite on Slott's run because of how many fans he has on the net, but I have to say that his run was mediocre. I put up with his run because I thought eventually it would end soon and a better writer would come along, but apparently that's not the case. Instead, Peter Parker is gone and this hack will continue to write Spider-Man.

Throughout the issue, I felt like crying. My second favorite character in comics is official gone. According to Wacker this is going to be permanent. I doubt this will be the case, but a part of me is still scared that it might be the case. Even if it's not, it's still sad to think that I won't be reading a good Spider-Man book for the next few years. I have no interest in reading a book about Doc Ock pretending to be Petey. I am boycotting this book and every book Slott will ever write and Wacker will ever edit.

I've made jokes in the past that it sometimes feels like villains traveled from their dimension to ours in order to make superheroes' lives more miserable than before, and this seems like another case of that. Maybe the Big Two will learn that a reason sales were decreasing the past decade wasn't because of the market, but because of sucky writing and lame stunts like this have isolated fans, both old and new.

What a terrible ending. Dan Slott shows that he really doesn't understand character. A person is just more than a sum of their memories and having someone's memories doesn't mean you'll be like them, think like them or act like them. Having Doc Ock suddenly transform into a hero after so many decades of being a villain is just completely unbelievable. I said I'd give Superior Spider-Man a chance but after reading #700 I'm going to skip it entirely.

I wonder if people would be less upset if they could look back once this whole new take was over, say several years from now, like 5 or 8, if people could look back and see where it all ended up and how eventually Amazing Spider-man returned, would people be less upset and just sit back and enjoy the story? If Slott tipped his hand and said that this would only last for a year or half a year or maybe two years?

I liked this, its a great character study.

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

The bad guys usually blame their pasts, things happened to them that made them bad guys. What if the bad guy was in a new body that had a good track record? Would that villain still be the bad guy they are? If the bad guy had the memories of a good guy (memories that molded that hero into who he is) would that villain make different choices? Would they end up going down the same path that led them to being a bad guy? I will miss Amazing Spider-Man/Peter, but I think this is an interesting idea and would LOVE to see where it goes. I just wish we would also get more on Peter, maybe a sub plot of Dr. Stranger figuring out Peter isn't Peter and that Peter's soul is lost and searching for it. Maybe retrieving it too. So that we get a little a Peter as well as this new Superior Spider-Man.

@Rixec: I personally don't dislike the idea of Doc Ock realizing the good in him and deciding to be a good guy, or rather continue being. What I do dislike is Otto taking over Peter's personal life.

I believe that Spider-Man is a character that one learns to love because the comic not only shows the hero, it also shows how Peter has to deal with his double life. That is what makes him, in my opinion, one of the most relatable characters there is. Having that taken away is what hurts the most.

I have no doubt that this story is not over, Slott has something planed and I'm dying to know what it is.

OMG! I´m one of those guys who likes statu quo changes. I loved Ben Reilly´s Spider-man, I loved Captain America´s death, I loved Garyson´s Batman & Robin, I loved Morrison´s New X-men, but this si disgusting.

Slott did have an interesting variety of characters to choose to become the Superior Spiderman. I guess the most basic thing was choosing a spider-powered-guy; in my opinion Kaine was THE candidate.

Never liked Slott stuff, since Straczinski left the franchise I never got 100% cought by the series. This turnover is awful. I really expected something cool, something that could last a couple of years. This comic book will fail and in less than an year we will have Peter Parker back…

We thought OMD was a disaster... MARVEL, you´re destroying the world´s biggest superhero (Disney´s fault??)

THIS.

This stunt is one of many reasons why the majority of modern comics (and I'm referring to anything from 2004-on) make me just SICK.

They give me the subterranean homesick blues

They make me want to organize demonstrations

And for the rest of you, they make you want to drop titles--though only a few of you all actually do

Dan Slott: Your poor imitation of Ultimate Spider Man 160 is not accepted by me. Calling it "Superior Spider Man" doesn't make it so. So you ripped Death of Spider Man (Ultimate Universe) and parts of The Dark Knight Rises to make Amazing Spider Man 700.....Mr. Slott you did WORSE than Quesada in One More Day. I never thought I would say that in my life.

This is almost identical to the last time Amazing Spider-Man 'ended'. Issue 441, and then the relaunch, left us with Mattie Franklin being the new Spider-Man. It'll be interesting to see where they go with this.

This doesn't feel right. This doesn't feel right at all. How in the hell am I going to explain this to my nephew? It's going to be like finding out that Santa's not real. I just don't think I can accept this, I really can't.

The worst thing, though, is that I spent 8 1/2 bucks on this thing and only a third of it is worth a shit. Weird backup: Don't care. Cutesy Black Cat story: really don't care. 6 pages of letters: WHO THE F*** READS THE LETTERS SECTION TO BEGIN WITH?! This should've been $4.99 at the absolute most, and even that would've been a stretch.

I didn't have much attachment to Dan Slott run. I liked some thing but not a lot of it. All I have to say is: "Fck that ending".

Okay, i just read Avenging Spider-man 15.1 and there is no way this will last. They have already planted the seeds for his return with Uatu! I just hope not to much more damage is done to how he is perceived by everyone in his life. Also, Doc Ock should be dead after Peter comes back. Or make him a true hero. In his own body.

Dan Slott has been planning this far longer than that; this all started in #600 and showed just how much Spider-Man is to the everyday man.

@Rixec:

So then it stands to reason that this is of course a temporary shift for Spidey -

One More Day - Mephisto isn't likely to take the news of Parker's demise lightly - Hey they had a deal.

No worries here - We're all along for the ride and it will be interesting to see Doc try to fill Parker's shoes for awhile - at least for One More Day - the confrontation with Mephisto should be interesting.

I really liked this issue, like we all knew that Peter Parker wasn't going to be the Superior Spider-Man, but I was never sure how that was going to happen and I was surprised by the ending and I certainly will be reading Superior Spider-Man.

Totally this. I'm excited to see how everything all plays out and I'm glad Peter didn't go out like a punk and probably achieved one of his greatest accomplishments by reforming one of his oldest arch-nemeses into carrying out the legacy that he had built up as Spider-Man.

So... does anyone else think Uatu talking about ghosts will be relevant down the road? ;)

I know alot of people are upset by the way Peter Parker died but to me it makes sense. Peter Parker has given up so much more than any other superhero(imo) and never truely asked for anything in return. In his final moments he's not worried about himself he's worried about his loved ones and what would happen with Otto as spidey. In his last moments he helped save Otto and everyone else by showing Otto what it really means to be Spider-Man. That to me is the purest form of everything Spider-Man stands for.

"So do the proud men die. Crucified not on a cross of gold but on a stake of humble tin."

I remember when everyone was dropping Spidey during the Clone Saga and I stayed on, and I remember when everyone was dropping Spidey after One More Day, and I stayed on, and I remember how sick I was of them going on and on about how "Everything is ruined, they totally destroyed my favorite character," and I would have to say "Listen man, it's a big misstep I agree, but its not worth giving up." So that is why I know right now somebody is going to say the exact same thing to me when I come out and say that this was the issue that made me finally drop Spider-Man, the first comic I ever started reading.

I'm not saying that what they did was wrong, sure I feel like it was, but I realize that what's wrong to someone seems right to another person, I'm just saying that reading comics is kind of like being in a relationship. You slowly started to like someone, stay with them through their different stages, and sure its not always good but you stay by them because you know that no matter what happens the person you care about is still there. That is until the day you look at them and realize they're just a totally different person. And seeing Mary Jane making out with someone who isn't Peter when she thinks it is, seeing Pete spend his last days trapped and tortured in quite possibly the most cruel prison I can imagine, knowing that he died without anyone knowing he's gone so not a single tear can be shed over him, all to make way for a darker version of Spider-Man, and knowing that the creators think this is what their audience wants, well it just makes me realize that this series and I have grown apart, and its time I started seeing other people.

Now.

He will never forgive Marvel. You heard it here first folks.
