The Amazing Spider-Man 2

4

It may not be "amazing," but we think it's still worth checking out. Come read our thoughts on Spidey's sequel!

Honestly, my expectations for the The Amazing Spider-Man 2 were pretty mixed. On one hand, I enjoyed the first a good deal and this one seems like it'll embrace more of a "popcorn fun" vibe. But on the other hand, it's trying to juggle a lot of material, so it's understandable that would generate some concern. While this does become a bit of an issue, it by no means ruins the overall experience. So no, this isn't another Spider-Man 3.

If you enjoyed the awkward and adorable chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone in the first movie, then you'll be happy to know there's plenty more of it in this one. They share some legitimately charming moments and a lot of them made me crack a goofy smile or laugh out loud. You can't help but want to root for them, you know? But it's not just the lovable scenes they sell, either. Both are able to deliver in every scene, even if their dialogue may feel a little odd once or twice. Seeing as this movie also deals with Peter Parker trying to cope with the promise he made to Captain Stacy (no idea what I'm talking about? Watch the first movie), there's a major spotlight shined on the problems with their relationship. Sure, some of this may feel a little cheesy or silly for some, but I found myself really enjoying the focus on their situation and that's obviously due to their undeniable chemistry. Not only that, but it's interesting to see where they both stand on these issues and what it ultimately means for them. Like I said above, I love the connection these two characters have and this sequel does a great job bringing that front and center.

The action with Spider-Man's a blast. It's a bit disappointing they used so many good bits in the trailers, but honestly, watching it all unfold on the big screen was still hugely enjoyable and a real visual treat. What I really enjoyed were the little moments that highlighted Peter's spider sense. Yes, slow motion tends to be overused in some movies, but in this one, it's reserved for just the right spots and allows you to truly appreciate how Spidey's able to tackle some obstacles. Additionally, this movie goes above and beyond to present Spider-Man as a symbol of hope. When it comes to him saving people -- be it someone in the way of a deadly crash or a kid getting bullied -- there's plenty of Spidey proving he strives to be a true hero. Oh, and the scenes of Spider-Man swinging throughout the city? Pure eye candy and my only complaint about that is that I wish there was more of it! Director Marc Webb managed to incorporate some pretty clever shots in there, so it never became a dull experience and remained exciting as Spider-Man soared over New York's crowded streets.

So, how are Dane DeHaan and Jamie Foxx, you ask? Well, he may not be the deepest character around, but Foxx's Electro certainly is an entertaining one. He goes from feeling powerless and ignored to powerful and betrayed, so naturally, he wants to make everyone else suffer just like he did. Foxx is a talented dude, so it should come as no surprise he plays both sides very well. Personally, I would have loved to see his character get a little more attention, but it is what it is. As for DeHaan, I think he does a commendable job with the material he's given. He may not feel like the "Apex Goblin" (you're welcome, Chronicle fans), but I think he's a thoroughly engaging actor. The supporting cast is solid, too. Sally Field gets a little more focus this time around (rightfully so!), and she has one moment that will definitely hook onto your emotions. Paul Giamatti doesn't get much screentime, but the little he does have is absolutely enthralling. I couldn't help but chuckle as he made a certain exclamation later on in the movie. It's totally silly, but as a fan of his character, I loved it.

As expected, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has a good amount of fan service and takes some steps to establish the universe's future. There's quite a few name-drops and, even though we already know the path Sony will take with this franchise, it was still pretty satisfying to witness little hints about what lies ahead. There's at least one character introduced that makes me wonder if they'll play a major role in the next one. Sadly, my screening did not have a credits scene. Bummer, right?

The movie has its fair share of emotional moments, but there's one that really delivers. Some of you may see it coming, but it won't matter because this scene is executed incredibly well. Seriously, it's guaranteed to have your undivided attention and, even if you know what's coming, will likely have your jaw dropped.

One small issue the first movie had was Peter taking off his mask an unnecessary amount of times and far too many people learning about his identity. Thankfully, that's not the case this time around. In fact, there was only one moment where I wanted to say, "PUT ON THE MASK, MAN! PEOPLE HAVE HIGH QUALITY CAMERAS NOWADAYS!" but honestly, it worked for the bit so it's really not that big of a deal.

While I did enjoy the finale with Electro, they unfortunately decided to add an extra element to it -- one that takes place a good deal away from the two main characters. The goal was to give extra weight to the scenario and make it feel more dire, but instead this felt totally generic and took away from the more compelling material (aka Spider-Man vs. Electro). I know why this was added, but honestly, it felt totally unnecessary and added one of those generic countdowns to the scene.

I can usually tolerate shaky camera work, but it was virtually unbearable during a brawl in the opening scene. Even when it would momentarily cut away from the action, it felt like the camera was being held during an earthquake. Thankfully, this isn't an issue for the rest of the movie, but if you're seeing it on IMAX, prepare for some visually frustrating shots in the beginning.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 juggles quite a few different stories, and while the material with Harry Osborn is good, the transition to Green Goblin and what happens next feels a little rushed. I mean, I totally understand why they make him put on the armor and hop on the glider, and how his battle concludes is great, but Harry becoming the "final boss" felt awkwardly put in there and his appearance just feels very conveniently timed. Don't get me wrong: this duo has a more organic connection than the villains in Spider-Man 3, but you can tell the film has a little more on its plate than it needs. And don't worry, Rhino isn't crammed into the mix, either. His role really is minimal and, if anything, helps tease the movie universe's future. Really, don't go in expecting some big brawl with the brute or else you'll be disappointed. Lastly, the doctor working in Ravencroft came off as way too silly and ended up feeling more like a distraction. If this character was toned down a bit, those scenes could have felt more gripping and impactful.

Sure, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 feels a little bloated, but it makes up for that with some very fun sequences, strong humor, solid performances, and some legitimately emotional developments. Basically, it's a popcorn flick with a whole lot of heart. All in all, I had a really good time with Webb's second Spider-Man movie and I'm definitely excited to see what they'll hit us with next.

Great movie, better than the first. This really cements Garfield as the best Spider-man on film. The way they killed off Gwen was fantastic and really hit me hard.

Screened it a few months ago at work so I saw a really rough cut of it, i.e (wolverine origins leak) and my girlfriend and I both thought the film was great. Excited to finally see it this weekend with all of the special effects and music in place.

They filmed a LOT of movie and cut it down quite a few times, so while things may seemed rushed, trust me they modified everything for pacing's sake, some said the first screening they showed was almost 4 hours long, the cut I saw was 3 hours long, so I imagine the final version is shorter and probably flows a lot better.

I do appreciate the added level of espionage and backstory this provides rather than the cookie cutter sin city treatment the first movie with Toby got. I know Avi was saying something stupid like we'll never run out of idea's so spiderman doesn't need to be in any other franchises. (yeah that's why you rebooted this one)

I just hope it doesn't become another hot mess like the first trilogy. Which I adored the first and second movies.

getting back on track. I've read other peoples opinions about it after knowing how it ended for so long, I was in utter shock. There was one thing that bothered the ever living crap out of me, so I hope it was fixed.

It's not a spoiler either, more a simple editing mistake.

Around the end of the movie Gwen Staci mentions to spiderman "Is that Electro" at the power plant as it is experiencing power fluctuations. When Electro mentioned his name to total of like 3 characters none of which were THE NEWS or GWEN STACI and I was pissed off like "HOW DOES SHE KNOW HE IS CALLED ELECTRO?"

We shall see.

@abdullahzubair: Well then you're insane. The MCU is basically what are other studios are aiming for Avengers and Cap 2 are still the two best CBMs and TASM 2 was extremely mediocre.

I thought it was awful.

The film plods along with the most awkward and crowbarred of romantic comedy plots, ropey action and boring dialogue. It then misuses one of Spidey's most tragic life events to create lazy drama, rather than having written it well. By the time IT happens, I stopped caring about the characters in the film. They didn't work out their differences, they just overcome them because the plot required it.

Foxx was WASTED as Electro. Corny to the point of eyerolling and nausea. Same for Osborn.

Plus, why did they gender swap Ashley Kafka and make her into a man who was essentially a parody of every Nazi scientist?

I don't know how anyone who is a fan of comics can encourage this crap. Sony has essentially taken the names and some basic details from Spider-Man comics, and then slapped them onto characters that in no way resemble the ones from the source material. They totally miss the spirit of Spider-Man, they "re-imagine" everything, and they use the narrative as a very weak filler between really awful special effects sequences. Garfield is as unlikable as Peter Parker as he can possibly be; He comes off like the guys who picked on Pete, not like Pete himself.

If you have any respect or love for Spider-Man, you won't pay to see this. You won't encourage Sony to keep raping these film rights.

I came out of this film neither loving it nor hating it, so I guess I'd give it a 3/5 myself, which is a shame because I would rate the first one as a 4. This should have been Electro's story (his name is even in the title) but I felt his villainousness was diminished by Harry's presence.

I watched it today. It wa entertaining, fun, but not much better than it's predecessor. The dialogues are TERRIBLE, and lots of characters are overacted. The whole Harry Osborn/Green Goblin plot feels crammed in and doesn't work properly, either. The fight scenes are cool, though, the score is good (not Zimmer's best, but still I liked it) and the VFX are top-notch. So that's somwehere between a 2.5/5 and a 3/5 for me

This film was a disaster MY GOD, I blame Jamie Foxx for most of the beginning. The score was also terrible and distracting (especially during the Times Square scene).

Andrew Garfield sucks as Spider-Man. I cringed every word that came out of his mouth when the mask was down. I think Garfield has a unique sense of humor, but it just does NOT go with Spider-Man.

He's still great as Peter Parker though.

Great review and as for the amazing spiderman 2......I would be pay to see it again!, loved it!, but People need to understand that spiderman 3 was bad not for the amount of villains, but there was no connection to the characters and the whole story telling was complete garbage. So if people are going to moan about to many villains then they will hate amazing spiderman 3 but like i said, it's not the number of bad guys in the movie that wreck it and i don't think they will have the full members of the sinister six since there is not enough time in the movie to do a full back story on all the characters. So chill.

The one thing this film did, is reinvigorate me about Spider-man. I haven't read him much since One More Day and this film really reminded me why I love Spidey so much. By the way, Andrew Garfield may be another case of perfect casting in a super hero movie. He is perfect as Spidey

My screening didn't have one and, based on what I've heard, if there is one, it's just a scene for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Saw it last night. There were a lot of moments that reminded me of the bad Bat Man movies and then if you mix in a little CW show teen drama you pretty much have what this movie is. I did like the effects and Gwen Stacy`s character is okay, but I`m not a fan of Andrew Garfield`s take on Peter Parker. Out of five stars i`d give it a 2 1/2. Might have to see Captain America again just to forget this movie.

I really really liked this movie. Don't understand the dialogue complaints. Everything is really well executed from directing, acting and the actions sequences are some of the best. The Music came out banging.

The biggest problems with movie is the pacing and being a little bloated. I am sort of glad to be done with the dad subplot as I thought it was the weakest parts of the films, however, that didn't stop my enjoyment of the movie. It is super fun, and emotional. This is the Spider-Man that I love to see in action. It's like 4.5 stars.

He didn't compose the whole thing though. He replaced another dude very late. I don't know how much of that was his fault or the other guys (since its unlikely they would have scrapped all of it and delayed the entire film).

Besides, one bad score doesn't all of a sudden lose Zimmer's credibility. Lion King alone earns you a lifetime's worth of respect.

I'm actually pretty disappointed in myself that I left a major dialogue complaint out of my review: Electro. He has some seriously bad lines, but I was able to shrug them off since the character is in a pretty silly/ridiculous mental state to begin with. That said, I do understand if others cringe at them. I also failed to mention how the sub-plot with the dad feels awkwardly put in there, too, but again, that was a minor gripe. Overall, I also enjoyed it a lot :D

I enjoyed it for the most part, but I still can't quite place how much I liked it. It had so many little flaws that just annoyed the heck out of me, from stuff I was hoping to see from the comics the film was based on, to basic issues with the plot and pacing. Still better than Spider-man 3, but I don't think it holds up to Spider-man 1, 2, or ASM1.

Holy Crap was that a mess. Tonally it was all over the place which isn't a bad thing but a major fault that is exasperated by the poor script put forth by Orci, Kurtzman and Pinker. Forgoing all sense of character for "gee that'll look cool" asethtics. Which isn't bad some of the action looks really good but it's all hollow and meaningless because no one cares about any of the digital representations of characters on teh screen.

My theater was utterly dead by the end.

I think they did a great job with the relationship between Peter and Gwen. It really felt like they had chemistry.

And I liked the scene where Electro had just discovered his power in Times Square, and he was scared, and the cops were scared, and it was clear no good was going to come out of it. It felt very realistic, like you could understand how bad things can happen without anyone having ill intent.

But the goblin scene really felt rushed, and the short scene with the Rhino was ridiculous. When it ended, you could feel my whole theater just sitting there, waiting, like..."that's not really all there is, is it? There must be more?"

Plus I still just don't buy the mech Rhino. Clearly the reason they didn't go with the classic Rhino is that they felt like it wouldn't translate to the screen somehow, otherwise why make the change. But how is a mech rhino suit any less ridiculous than a super-powered Rhino? This is a series where spider-venom gave one guy spider powers and another guy goblin powers, and where another guy turned into the Lizard and was able to turn huge chunks of NYC into lizards. It's not like we're in a realistic world here, giving a guy rhino powers is no different from everything else. But on the other hand, a rhino mech suit presumes that Oscorp was thinking to themselves, "let's make a mech suit for paramilitary use...and let's make it look like a rhino for absolutely no reason. Because so many countries are going to want to buy rhino-themed suits." It just makes no sense.

This movie gets a 2 or 3 at best. Some of the action scenes with Electro were really neat but Harry Osborn was terrible. When Green Goblin first came on screen I immediately wondered why they cant get this character right.
