The Amazing Spider-Man #1 - Lucky To Be Alive; Recapturing That Old Spark; Crossed Paths; How My Stuff Works; Homecoming, Sort Of; Kaine; Learning To Crawl: Awazing Reality

There's a lot of potential here. Not the best issue ever but not bad. The back up stories were a nice touch, but the Learning to Crawl lead-in was garbage. Whether it's supposed to be set in the 60's to coincide with Spidey's origin or whether it's set "thirteen years ago" as the opening page suggests that's when Peter became Spidey...the bottom line is they didn't have smartphones, tablets, or modern headphones in the 60s or the 2000's. I wish the artist had realized this instead of making all those mistakes in the book. If that continues through Learning to Crawl, even as a hardcore Spidey fan, I'll pass, too many anachronisms.

This was a meh issue for me. I did like the part when Black Cat was seething though. Really funny. That scene in Superior where Spider-Man just punches out her tooth was pure comedy gold.

I agree. You are spot on with you sentiment. I do not feel that Superior Spider-Man was executed well at all from start to finish. But as long as Spider-Man continues to sell the way it has, I doubt that Marvel will have a reason to replace Slott with someone else. I have a feeling that Slott will remain on Spider-Man as sole writer as Bendis has with Ultimate Spider-Man because they are making so much money for Marvel , as well as the fact that Slott lives only a few blocks away from the office. Thus, Marvel finds it a whole lot cheaper to keep Slott around for as long as he wants to write Spider-Man(whether or not his writing is Superior to everyone else) because Slott =$$$$$$$$$$$ for Marvel!!!

I enjoyed the main story. The back-up stories were mostly a waste of time. Felicia seemed to be kind of out of character. I know Ock was down on her, but she seemed to be way more evil-ish here than I would expect.

Marvel must not have a lot of confidence in the Inhuman event stuff if they feel like they need to include it in here to get people reading it.

I really like the cover... the price is a bit steep to be fair though.

The one aspect of Superior Spider-Man that I didn't like was the fact that Spock was able to takeout Felicia so easily when her Bad Luck powers should have seen that coming. And the fact that Slott has decided to make her into a super villain against Spider-Man is quite depressing without knowing that Spock wasn't Peter to begin with.

@captainhoopla: To be fair, it's an iconic hero we're talking about. It would be like replacing Kal-El with Zod.

I started reading Superior Spider-Man after the whining began; I relished in it. The fortunate thing is that it reinvigorated people's love for the character by giving them a feel of someone else in Peter's shoes.

One thing I particularly enjoyed about Spock was his villainy on crime.

Good Lord. There's nothing like a new Spider-Man book to bring out all the whiners.

Anyone notice how Slott managed to retcon a retcon within 22 pages? The new established origin takes place 13 years ago this would be 2001-2002. In the 1.1 followup, Pete's debut as a wrestler there's a kid who "exposes" him using a smartphone, either a Iphone or a Samsung to capture the action. Then, he uploads his video onto youtube. Anyone sense the error here? Youtube wasn't a thing until the mid 2000's and the iphone made its debut in the late 2000's. It's not even a minor error because it throws into question the entire relevance of this backup story as many of what this kid could and could not do is largely impossible. Google is a thing you know, use it.

There was defiantly some interesting setup in this issue. I believe Peter will be going back to Ock's memories, meaning we have not seen the last of him ! Overall I really enjoyed the issue, I have not read any of the side stories yet, but I am glad that see Peter reacting to what Ock has done. That is very interesting to me personally.

While I understand the desire to deal with some of the dangling nonsense from 'Superior', personally my concern is that if they go that way the book will get entangled in wangst and quite frankly there's only so much of that I'm willing to put up with. I like that Peter is in a generally good mood. Can we keep it that way for a while please, Dan? We don't wanna be going back to the 90s here.

the cover is horrible it looks like peter was glued to a background, the coloring is horrible, the manga styles art is horrible, the price is horrible.

I was talking about Ramos art no the book itself that´s why the 3/5. Ireally dislike his style.

Was all right, some fun parts. But Pete seems to be adjusting waaay too well. We need confrontations with the Avengers over how they let him down, some pain over how screwed up things are with MJ, just some stuff to make Parker a three-dimensional person who's been through something awful, not just the regular Slott quipping machine.

Slott has talent, but he's far better at the froth than the substance. Ramos matches his style pretty well. That's not particularly a compliment.

@vegandiet: I've been meaning to pick up Family Business. I did read a lot of JMS stuff back in day and really liked it, I had a good sense of humor and I like the way he treated the characters.

This would actually make a great plot point. He should be offended that nobody went beyond a minor suspicion.

I really hope it takes more for Peter's friends and fellow superheroes to realize he's back to normal and accept him than what they saw on TV in this issue.

What about Mary Jane? As a Peter/MJ shipper, I'm not reading the Spider-Man books until they're back together. Is there anything in this issue for us Peter/MJ fans?

@illo_29: If you'd like some actually pretty good current Spider-man series, you could pick up The Family Business graphic novel by Mark Waid that came out just a little while ago. The premise sounds a little contrived, but it's actually pulled off fairly well, and the art is just gorgeous.

You could also pick up some back issues of J Michael Stracynzki's (I know I spelled that wrong) run, which was pretty fantastic, with some of the best characterization of Mary Jane that I've ever read, and had some very interesting status quo changes.

Am I the only one who thinks Peter should really reevaluate his reltionships with his personal friends, family and fellow super heroes? How absolutely no one (aside from Carly) helped him get his body back or figured out that someone was parading around in his flesh? How much time he spent fighting side by side and going undercover with Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Jessica Drew, Clint Barton, Logan, etc. and they all basically said "f%!k Peter, he's a jerk". I'd be livid and sad that I have such crappy allies.

@vegandiet: Thank you! I thought Superior was an interesting idea, but I was annoyed at Slott's inability to write the story around the characters. Instead he re-wrote the characters to fit the story (i.e. dumbing them down so now one could figure it out and from the issues I read Ock didn't do that great of job pulling off acting like Peter in the first place). That's why I dropped it at issue 15.

I just came back into comics a little while ago and didn't have that much exposure to pre-superior Slott so I'm hoping that's not something he does all the time, if so I'll may have to wait around for another writer. I'll just have to pick this up and see.

The InHuman bonus is a nice surprise.

@micah: I didn't. You'll notice that whenever I was talking about the run, I used "I felt" or "I found". I never pretended as if I spoke for the comics community. I spoke for myself. That's all.

People that are heaping such massive praise on a completely mediocre book, do have pretty suspect taste, in my opinion.

I really didn't like Slott's run, and Superior Spider-man got me back. I really enjoyed it, but was hesitant to continue with Amazing since I hated how he wrote Peter. I really liked this issue and am excited to continue! It feels like a bit of a revitalization and I needed it. I didn't like how it seemed like everyone had to be clowns and fight for the joke, which is why I was enjoying Superior Spider-man. However, he did an excellent job here, and if he continues this trend, then this is going to be one of my top current series. I wasn't a fan of Huberto Ramos' art for a while, but it's gotten better, and I thought it was great this issue! Great review!

I have the connecting variant* on pre-order, but I find myself with the comiXology store page open on my iPhone, sorely tempted to get the digital version now and read it on my iPad when I get home from work...

I'm really glad Peter's back.

*Incidentally, I still can't get over how bad the standard cover is.

from the preview that was on this site i think ill pass just on the fact that it looks like this whole issue is just peter finding out what has happened since hes been gone by swinging around the city and that doesn't make since because if you had your body hijacked for x amount of time wouldn't the first thing you do is find out what happened while you've been gone? by talking to the people who know your spiderman or maybe google your self too get the information and not swinging around the city like the last x months didn't happen to you

I love it great issue. The Felicia story Slott is writing now thought.... it's breaking my heart.... I can NOT handle these feels.
