Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #25 - City Fall Part Four Review

5

Part four of "City Fall" is here! War is on the horizon and the Turtles aren't sure how to react after discovering Leo has become Shredder's second-in-command.

The Good

Fair warning: you may suffer from an overdose of fan service after reading this issue. There's two big reveals in the fourth chapter of "City Fall" and both are sure to induce a very, very strong reaction. One is a huge twist you'll never see coming and the other has been brewing for quite some time, but despite it being more obvious, the reveal still made me excited like a kid on Halloween night. Seriously, talk about a beyond superb way to leave fans wanting more.

Big reveals aside, this issue focuses on how the heroes are reacting after finding out Leonardo has been turned and the potential gang war takes some massive strides forward. The focus on Raph is pretty by the books, but it's still an engaging read, especially when Donatello and Michelangelo enter the mix. I never really get tired of how the IDW team writes the brothers in situations like this one, and you'll probably be surprised by how the friction between the three is resolved. Over on the villain side of things, we get a deeper look at Shredder and Kitsune's plans for Leo and some of the specifics behind the magic currently influencing him. The second chapter revealed a lot about what's going on with the Turtles' former leader, but this new set of information was much appreciated and serves as a nice reminder of how they've expanded the mythos so much.

It's entirely possible Mateus Santolouco was born to illustrate this book. Once again, he presents some hugely impressive illustrations and, dare I say it, has provided a signature "modern" look for the franchise. If Kevin Eastman's style represents classic TMNT, then Santolouco's is absolutely the definitive modern look for the title. Month after month, he brings a consistent and recognizable look for each character and fills the environment with so much detail. That said, I do have two minor gripes this time around. Every now and then backgrounds are totally eliminated and it feels random. However, considering the amount of effort he puts into each panel, it would be understandable if he did this because he was pressed for time. Also, there are two times characters completely lost their irises. It's possible this is used to convey rage, but there are other examples of anger and the characters still had them. Again, I only noticed this twice, so no biggie whatsoever.

As always, colorist Ronda Pattison does a solid job with Santolouco's pages, giving each character a little more depth and making them immediately recognizable with their unique coloring. While Tom Waltz, Kevin Eastman and Bobby Curnow write these great moments, Santolouco and Pattinson always bring them to creation with a tremendous amount of talent.

The Bad

I only have two very small issues with the art this time around and I listed them above. Aside from that, I have no complaints.

The Verdict

Everything is heating up this chapter and the next one has the potential for some massive and explosive payoffs. The team continues to make the heroes lovable and there's all kinds of exciting drama building up with the villains. Toss in two cheer-inducing reveals and even more praiseworthy art from Santolouco/Pattinson, and this is yet another excellent chapter of the book's first big event. At this rate, there's no denying "City Fall" could become one of the best TMNT stories. If I wore a hat, I'd tip it to the people over at IDW for creating this. But I don't have a hat, so hopefully this 5-star rating will express my appreciation just as well.

After City Fall, they need to do a Rocksteady and Bebop mini. I don't know, send them to space or something...

favourite current series .

I loved that reveal at the end, but the one that wasn't teased at as directly completely blew me away. I couldn't agree more about Mateus Santolouco's artwork. I'm loving everything about this series.

How about switching up the reviewers of these books around here so there is less bias? No offense, but I'm tired of seeing 5 star reviews every week from your 3 favorite titles, Deadpool, TMNT and Injustice.

TMNT is honestly a book that deserves 5 stars every month. It's that good! And that last page was just..... Amazing! Glad to see them in the comics. Can't wait for their micro series.

@loki2u: Can't speak on the other titles, but TMNT has been consistently a 5 star book since this event started and a 3-4 star book all along, if you even question that you clearly aren't reading it. So exactly how can you weigh in on how good or bad it is?

If there was ever an issue of Deadpool which deserved a perfect score and not just a rounded up 4.5, this was it. By far the most compelling plot set up yet. It's hardly like I'm alone in this opinion, either. Based on the comments, many agree. TMNT is consistently well-written and the art is superb. Injustice is one of the best things DC is putting out there, is sharply written and an excellent dose of emtoion as well. And, once again, the comments section for both of these have a fair amount of individuals who agree with me on this. So, "no offense," but I don't really care if you're tired of seeing that. That's like me complaining Tony loved an issue of Snyder's Batman that I thought it was just alright. We all have our title preferences, but when I do have my gripes with an issue, I'll let them be known. I'd much rather see what a follower/fan of a title thinks than someone who's just randomly jumping on and missing out on all of the history (unless it is indeed a jumping on point). Hell, the one time I gave TMNT a 3 Corey strongly disagreed on the podcast. Fans of the franchise agree this is a thoroughly lovable volume. If they let me down or if I have a complaint, I'll happily say so in my review and have done so numerous times. If I love an issue and the pros massively outweigh the cons, it's going to warrant a 5. This week, these issues absolutely delivered. Then again, I thought my "CV Reviews Discussion" thread already clarified the rating system for you?

"I was under the impression that a five star rating meant I should rush out and buy this book...but I see it is as simple as the reviewer just loving the book and then stating why.

So thanks for clearing up the misunderstanding....I won't comment on the system anymore after reading this. :)"

Also, just to clarify, the list you provided isn't my top 3. Injustice is on there, but I'd also give it to Green Arrow and Scarlet Spider.

@manwithoutshame: They're getting their own micro-issue soon.

Casey's dad was a Purple Dragon -- possibly Hun.

Man... my LCS shop is so inconsistent with IDW titles. Bought an iTunes card to purchase these digitally and the clerk didn't even activate properly so I have to wait until Apple confirms some stuff through their support techs. I'm buying this the instant it gets checked out.

I liked the end, and the purple dragons haven't appeared yet but looks like they have something in all this.

@k4tzm4n: Im not surprised about Bebop and Rocksteady, because we have been getting build up with them since Raphael one shot which was back after issue 4. im just happy they was whipping this jem out now in city fall. if they did not introduce them I swear I was going to write a very sternly disappointed letter.

As you shouldn't be. Like I said in the review, "and the other has been brewing for quite some time, but despite it being more obvious, the reveal still made me excited like a kid on Halloween night." The true surprise was regarding Casey's father.

But yeah, it's definitely exciting to think about what'll come next AND they have their own Mico-Series issue!

I know! I've been using comixology a lot lately! That's where I've been scrounging for the old TMNT issues and micro-series! And yes sir, I did! :D

Oh man this was a very fine issue indeed, the reveals were nice but the part I'm most excited for in next issue is seeing the Leonardo and Shredder side by side team up. I do hope he lifts the kill ban though, Leo needs to get his hands dirty and from what I've seen in the promo shots for the North Hampton arc, it looks as though he is affected by such an act.

I have a theory about that, what if Leo is responsible for either directly or indirectly injuring or killing Splinter in this arc? It would definitely give him a Vengeance quest against Shredder. Also was it revealed in this issue that Kitsune is maybe Leo's mother? or was he just thrown off by her appearance? I got the feeling that she seems to be protecting him from shredder by having a kill ban.

This new TMNT comic looks great. Can anybody tell me what a good jump on point is?

Read this on the bus this morning. The second reveal was amazing but like many have said, was seen coming for a while. Especially after reading the karai micro. That first reveal though... I literally went WHAAAAAT. Hopefully my vocal outburst will make some others on the bus go pick it up. And now I've got to go back reread everything to see how much it was hinted at in earlier stories.

I don't think it was hinted all that much....I don't know if they said that him and Angel's dad were members of the Purple Dragons or if they just said that they ran around together...I think that was pretty much the extent of the hinting
