Superman/Wonder Woman #5 - Reflections

5

Too bad Superman and Wonder Woman had a little...disagreement last issue. Superman is definitely going to have his hands full against Zod and Faora.

The Good

This comic really shows us what's so good about both Wonder Woman and Superman. Each month, Charles Soule combines character depth and action within the same issue. He keeps the story balanced with plenty of opportunity to see another side to both characters while also bringing situations that allow them to show how majestic they can be with their powers and abilities.

As Superman and Wonder Woman had a little disagreement in the last issue, Superman has found himself alone facing Zod, who has just freed Faora from the Phantom Zone. At the same time, Diana takes a trip to Themyscira to reflect on recent events.

These two situations allow Tony Daniel to really flex his artistic muscles. You can probably imagine what it must be like to see Diana on the shores of Paradise Island. We get a calm and serene moment as well as Superman fighting two Kryptonians. Tomeu Morey's colors adds another layer to the art, really making it shine.

I sometimes fall behind on the Superman or Wonder Woman comics but this really is the best of both worlds. This is a series I make sure I read the day it's released. And Wonder Woman gets to kick some butt.

The Bad

Charles Soule and Tony Daniel continue to make this a blast. I just can't complain when I can dive into this series and immerse myself into the story.

The Verdict

I can still remember when people questioned the validity and need for this series. Each month Charles Soule shows us the different facets to these two great characters. Tony Daniel's art and Tomeu Morey's colors here really do shine. Whether it's Wonder Woman thinking things over on Paradise Island or Superman trying to fight off both Zod and Faora, this issue will grab hold of your interest and smack you in the most loving way possible. Find out who these characters really are and how much action they're capable of.

This book has lost its charm for me. I was really looking forward to it but things are just falling flat for me lately. The art was great but I thought that Diana's face looked a bit off at times, and the issue just felt like it was over too quickly without enough happening to make the issue seem worth it. I'll stick around for another issue, hopefully Soule can reel me back in.

@allstarsuperman: yes. While Greg Pak is bringing good character moments in AC, Soule is building up to some interesting arcs. But if Zod and Doomsday don't interest you nothing will.

I like the relationship but I just haven't felt the need to keep up on this book. The writing's good and the art's awesome, but I... just can't really get into it.

Really liked this issue, especially on Wonder Woman side. Also loved to see Faora, even if her debut was a bit underwhelming.

I expect an epic fight next month!

The part when Superman went to go put out the fire, did Zod and Faora know he was going to do that? And they took advantage of that by sneaking up on him? It that's the case than that's really awesome.

The last issue confused me. The ending, when Faora's coming from the Phantom Zone, you see Zod reaching out to her and then a close up on Superman's face with a 'KRRRRRACK' sound. The ending page shows Zod holding Faora's body in his arms. Please tell me I wasn't the only one that thought it looked like he broke her neck? It was seriously confusing.

Zod freed Faora from the Negative Zone??

*Clicks the link*

Yes, the Negative Zone discovered by Reed Richards!

So I'm guessing we're talking about the Phantom Zone, right? Sorry, I'm not reading the title currently.

What I liked about Zod and Faora is how coordinated their attacks felt. You can see Zod blasting Clark with heat vision while Faora kicks him, later they blitz him, one from each side... it felt Clark didn't know how to counter that.

No, it's a crossover Superman is doing with the FF.

@allstarsuperman: It's a fun title, Some people hype it as this amazing story when it's not, It's more an action based comic. If you're looking for a thought provoking story its not this title, but if you want a fun superhero story with a little bit of romance, You will find it here.

This book was great Zod took down Clark with relative ease. Just goes to show training and experience trumps raw power every time.

The one thing that bothered me is how come Zod already is capable of heat vision? Wasn't Clark 5 or 6 when he first used it? And that was after he'd been on the planet for 5 years soaking up the yellow sun light. Supergirl was able to use it the minute she awoke but that was due to the fact she had been orbiting the Sun for 5 years.

@timelord: Agreed, Skill > Strength, and I liked how they kept addressing how superman is strong, but was not very skilled.

As for the heat vision... Probably because Zod was much older and is more skilled.

And another awesome issue from Soule and Daniel!

I’m fr..gin happy that Soule didn’t went into “stargazing soul mates” when writing this series. Real relationships aren’t like walking in park, but really bumpy road. Bit of mutual attraction, couple of thing your share brought you together, but only then really get to know each other better. Sometimes you agree with your partner, sometimes not, slowly you revealing all yourself, you facing problems along the road, you may fail, but if you succeed, it all worth it.

A little troubling how fast Supes went down in fight against Zod and Faora, but, well, that only logical. When your opponents:

1. team-upping against you;

2. distracting you during fight;

3. know where to strike for maximal effect -

there is no other outcome (reminds me of my childhood). Diana really should give a couple lessons how to fight to Clark.

Diana’s one-sided talk with her mother was very touching and she ruled in this fight. You go, girl!

5/5 IMO, money spent well.

This is the first book I pick up when it's released. Every issue is full of amazing action, heart and complex character building that you don't get from their stand alone books.

I loved seeing how much of a true force Diana is when crossed and doesn't hold back. Say what you want about WW's New 52 origin but I think it's a fantastic evolution for the character.

The comparisons between Zod and Diana were amazing to see due to both of their warrior up bringing and training.

Great Art

Charlie Soule

If Catwoman can still have a book you don't think 2/3's of the trinity can handle it?

The art is beautiful -- it really is. As for the story, I guess it's okay but I don't have a good enough grasp of both characters to really know if this fits how they are being portrayed in the New52. If there is one spot I loved, it was having Diana go back home.

And is Batman always such a jerk?

@lykopis: You're goddamn right that you set yourself up to receive Batman's badassness! As for Superman being inept fighting wise. Historically, not really. Pre 52, he had mastered Kryptonian martial arts, was trained by Batman and WildCat, and was good with pressure points. IMO, they're playing up that Superman can't fight so that they can add something to his relationship with Wonder Woman really.

Well, Superman just started to be a hero in the new 52. Wonder Woman will most likely train him and later Batman most probably. It makes for an interesting story where we will get to see how Superman deals with being defeated.

@lykopis: I have no idea why Superman is Batman's friend. Personally, I think it'd make more sense if Superman straight up didn't like him at all. They can share a mutual respect, but the way Bruce acts sometimes...
