Superman/Wonder Woman #2 - Gods and Monsters

5

After that surprise appearance at the end of the first issue, what other troubles might Wonder Woman and Superman have to face?

The Good

We're only two issues into this series and Charles Soule and Tony Daniel have completely won me over. Superman and Wonder Woman are two great characters. Aside from the fact that they're an item, I'm much more interested in the dynamics and 'adventures' the two will face side by side.

Chances are you already know who showed up at the end of the first issue. Having Doomsday show up was a nice surprise. Seeing Wonder Woman face this character was really interesting. We also get to find out a little more about him and where he stands in the New 52. This provides an interesting twist.

A good porton of the issue deals with Superman meeting some of Wonder Woman's "family." Imagine what it can be like meeting your significant other's family. Then twist that a bit and crank up the craziness. The interactions provide Tony Daniel with a great opportunity to cut loose on the visuals. It's like Soule is combining the two characters titles and giving us exactly what we'd want to see in terms of conflict.

Tony Daniel's art does shine here, very brightly. You can see he's really giving it his all and it looks great. The colors by Tomeu Morey really give it all a nice sheen that makes the panels pop off the page.

If things weren't bad enough for these two, Soule gives us a crazy cliffhanger (that unfortunately was spoiled by the solicits).

The Bad

This was a fun and gorgeous book. I really enjoyed it and can't wait for more. Nothing to complain about except how Doomsday relates to Superman's past. In ACTION COMICS, Grant Morrison alluded to Superman dying by Doomsday. That seems like something the world would know about yet Wonder Woman seemed unaware. It's not a huge deal for this story but makes you wonder how Superman's encounter with Doomsday played out.

The Verdict

Only two issues in and this series has now become one of my favorites. Superman and Wonder Woman make a great pair, at least in terms of starring in a comic together. This book is driven by the story and the fact that these two powerhouses are about to meet some really big threats. With subplots involving their separate supporting casts, it's easy to see where these characters are coming from and it's a nice way to tie this series into their separate titles. Tony Daniel is rocking it in the art department and the book has the big epic feel it deserves. With the facets of the story Soule is laying out and Daniel's art, I can't wait to read more.

Loved it from beginning to end, quickly climbing the ranks in the Superman favorite list. Seeing Superman deliver the smack down to Apollo was great. And the Zod reveal at the end was awesome.I see tons of chemistry between the two but I think peoples definition of chemistry is them being funny together.

And people were saying this series was going to suck balls.

Best advise ever "never judge a book by it's cover"

This also proves that Ben Affleck is not destined to fail as batman.

This was awesome! It's great we get to see Doomsday getting some time in the new 52 finally! The highlight was easily Apollo vs Superman, Daniel's art was fantastic as always! Loving this series, and will be stating away from the solicits for spoilers! :3

This comic was awesome I hated how short it was, and did anyone notice how superman costume got torn when apollo hit him but was repaired after apollo blasted him with sun beams whats up with that? Anyway after seeing Diana support Clark about going up against doomsday I feel that these two have the potential of being the iconic couple that everyone wants to be with their significant other. I hope their relationship stays permanent.

This is an example of good superhero story telling. Humor, drama, action, romance...I will take this over the slow fall asleep pace of the ever so serious WW story anytime. Diana is not as one note in sm/ww as she is there ...in fact she never looked or sounded better imo and it's only two issues. I can see why Clark would be fascinated by her. She's awesome. And she's telling us in an unfolding way ( from the not wanting smooth to who he is as a man and hero) why she is with him. The Gods look great under Daniel's pencils. Supes and Apollo confrontation was awesome! Strife...stirring trouble and then going gooey was so fun.

Liked the issue but i'm confused and a little disappointed with what is implied about "the Death of Superman" like it never happened. I mean seriously it was even alluded to in Grant's run. I'm disappointed because the last few years of batman and gl make the cut scott free but one of the if not the biggest Superman stories in the last 25 years, the one which got the most headlines of like any comic event ever? why erase that?

So far creative team of Soule and Daniel don’t disappoint me, awesome art, some closer look in background of both Supes and Wondy and no lovey-dovey to extreme. This title only in its beginning, but it looks very promising.

This comic sucks! I thought that WW was going to be in a equal position with Superman, like Batman in B/S. But this issue showed that she is absolutely inferior to him. She is easily beaten by Doomsday and then Superman humiliates Apollo (the most powerfull being in Azarello's WW). The dialogs are the same. Again an d again WW is saying that he is very powerfuk. Her role is just to how how strong Superman is.

Go do some research on Doomsday, dude. Anyone expecting her to beat that thing up needs his head examined or is new to comics . WW is stating facts and she humiliated Orion in her book something many Orion fans are not happy with because Orion is written like a jackass. Supes as least is doing what any respectable gentleman would...standing up for his girl. Diana has smacked around people who tried to hurt Superman before...so don't even try to pull that lame gender card.

Yeah, but man. Doomsday. Even Superman gets beaten up by that guy. And besides, Doomsday is awesome.

I do hope they explain why WW doesn't know who he is, since he seems to have fought Superman in the past.

I really do not get how people say this comic is awesome or it sucks yet. It has had two issues and there the ultimate style over substance issues there is no depth yet to the characters its just flashy fights so far. This series has been a summer blockbuster its big its flashy but there is no depth which shows a lack of chemistry between the couple that DC wants us to route for.

This book was always going to be a hard sell to people that are against the new 52 and there changes but so far DC has shown nothing to get people invested or curious about this couple. If they want that to change they need to cut back on the style and go for some substance.

Traditionally Doomsday has also, eventually, been handled by Superman alone with some assistance to give him the edge needed.

As for standing up for her... yeah, that might be gallant, but it also totally emasculates her because she doesn't get to defend herself, a complaint quite a few people are making all ready because of how things go in the WW book.

If her beating up anyone for Supes does not emasculate him and that has happened many times in old canon and in new 52 JL....then this in no way should do her anything. For one she is not some passive damsel. Not at all. In those situations Superman can defend himself but because she cares for him...she would react...same he cares for her. People are not robots and I don't care what the WW book does because she acts likes she's everyone's priest or mother than a young woman with any real desires. You're looking to make an issue of something is not an issue. Them being equals, then they should be able to reciprocate without you looking to be offended. The situation is a woman bringing her guy home to her family some of who are jerks but they are unfortunately family and it ends up in the guy showing them...he is not something to be sneered at or pushed around. In reality if you care for someone you react. Not everyone will like everything. I for one find the WW book boring and dropped it and prefer this by far. So what is going on in the WW book means squat to me really. I don't buy all the SM books...so some things don't matter but it does not stop me from enjoying this.

Yeah and read "hunter prey". WW couldn't cope with DD then and neither could Orion, Martian Manhunter, Flash or any of the others. Only right at the end did Superman find the resolve to win and that was after he got HIS arm broken by DD!!

I love this comic, its brilliant-in fact I'm thinking of ditching Unchained and making it my monthly Superman title...

Naw, it'd be cool then. Fans like this have a kind of double standards I don't get. It'd be no problem her beating up HIS foes but let him shine a little with hers and the world is ending. I for one want to see her face off with Faora. I'm drooling for it but if I was a whiny SM fanboy I would demand WW never get to throw down with someone not her foe. Why should she get the honor of beating Faora? Should be Powergirl who should get the privilege. But I'm not like that. Diana is a perfect opponent for Faora...in fact so many of SM's foes seem to be perfect for them now they have a comic...As we on the subject of SM foes...Diana needs to throw down with Maxima. DC, do you hear that?

Diana is a perfect opponent for Faora...in fact so many of SM's foes seem to be perfect for them now they have a comic...As we on the subject of SM foes...Diana needs to throw down with Maxima. DC, do you hear that?

Agreed...

It's quite frankly impossible to emasculate Superman, because he is the guy that ends up saving the world regardless of the threat or what bend over backwards stunts DC has to pull to make it work. Wonder Woman is the greatest female superhero in DC's universe, yet she never gets to save the world even if she's every bit as capable as he is. So excuse me for not caring about him not saving the day once in a blue moon.

And I agree, Diana is not a passive damsel... which is why it's utter crap Superman gets to play white knight at her expense, she's the very last woman that needs any sort of defending.

It's not an issue if you are a Superman fan, but it's the usual DC crapping on WW to us that's more in her camp. Same with this relationship really, it's for his benefit, not hers.

And sadly now I have to just expect her getting mauled by Zod as well.

So if WW had defender Superman instead, would you have complained because Superman was being emasculated?

No, for the reason's given above.

Doomsday is no joke.People just over look him alot.I for one would never put ww on par with superman.Past and new 52.What people over look alot, an was shown in this fight, is superman durability is way higher than wonder woman.Lets us not talk about strength or speed. So far the writers of the new 52 superman comics are getting things on point.

It's got nothing to do with whether she needs defending or not. A man speaking up and telling someone don;t talk crap about the woman he cares for is a dumb thing? Then WW standing up for any fellow hero man or heroine woman is a dumb thing. I wonder if you go around preaching then? Bet you don't. So you'd stand by and not utter a word eh if your partner got insulted because she can beat up people? That's not how relationships work dude, or reality. I suppose this why WW never gets to have a relationship because the fans have such a chip on their shoulder. They don't want her written like a real person. Supes stood up for himself as well. And Apollo is a jerk. Deserves what he got.
