Superman Unchained #7 - Out of Time Review

4

Not only do you get Superman fighting for his life at the Fortress of Solitude, be prepared for some Batman fighting as well.

The Good

After barely managing to save the world from nuclear destruction, Superman now finds his Fortress of Solitude under attack lead by General Lane. As we're heading towards the end of the series, Scott Snyder gives us what we want. We get some huge battle scenes. Superman is such a powerful character but doesn't always get to fully cut loose. Superman vs General Lane and the Army isn't the only fight we get. Wraith isn't too happy with Batman and takes his fight to his doorstep.

It's not all fighting as we see some great interaction between Superman and Lois. As great as it is seeing Superman and Wonder Woman together, these pages make you long for the days when there was more going on between them.

With all the action, it's great seeing Jim Lee's art here. This is what we've been waiting for. There's also a new look for a character due to the circumstances and as crazy as it is, it's something I'd love to see again.

The Bad

It's been how long since the last issue? Unfortunately issue #6 came out in March. As I started reading this issue, I had to stop and go back and re-read issue #6. Yes, things happen to cause delays. It just really disrupts the momentum this series is building.

That being said, what's going on with Lex Luthor and Jimmy Olsen. I believe they haven't been seen since issue #4 (November 2013). It'll be weird seeing Lex is a more evil role the next time he shows up in this series since so much has happened in the rest of the DC Universe with him.

As great as the action scenes are, the nit-picker in me can't help but wonder how Superman or Batman will be able to repair or replace some of the precious things that have been damaged. It makes great visuals but I can't help think about the bigger picture and trying to return everything to how it was.

The Verdict

As you would expect, Scott Snyder and Jim Lee deliver another giant explosive issue. There's no holding back as the fighting and action takes the center stage. Lee's visuals are eye-opening and you'll love seeing every panel. It's not just non-stop action as Snyder gives us some more interaction between Superman and Lois that make you long for the old days. The biggest problem with this series is the release schedule. For whatever the reason is, it's deeply affecting the pacing of the story. It's unfortunate because I believe I'd enjoy this even more if I didn't have to keep going back to past issues to remind myself what happened. Regardless, I will stick it out to the end to see what Snyder and Lee have coming in the final two issues.

Do you think this book's time has pasted with all the delays?

Posted by Saint_Wildcard

Been a while since I enjoyed this series. But it was mostly just fighting so maybe that's why

I thought this series got cancelled

Geoff Johns already made me care for Superman in the new 52 with just 1 issue than this whole series.

Good issue, but yeah the insane delays have killed my enthusiasm for the book. I really wish I'd just trade waited this whole series now. I'm feeling the same way about Hawkeye. I think I've only liked one issue of it in the past year now.

Man the release schedule on this title has been so detrimental to the story, which is such a shame because the story is great. Seeing Batman (and later WW) against Wraith was entertaining, and I loved Snyder's spin on the "S stands for..." line from Man of Steel.

Not a fan? Why? (just wondering, Im not a fan either )

Definitely have to check this out to see how Batman held up against Wraith

Can't wait for the next one. I hope superman doesn't beat wraith by himself, considering how badly wraith beat him the first time. I'm hoping WW bats and supes all take him on.

I'm also more excited for luthors plans since we haven't seen him in a while. Let's hope Snyder didn't forget about him!

So Snyder thinks Wonder Woman is a dummy or something? Woman just stands there saying nothing along side Batman who is getting to talk a lot and then she gets to smash something. I mean come on. That's pretty lame you'd get to write WW for the first time time and have her say nothing while she's appeared in two issues now.

Edited by Squalleon

Now we all know what the "S" stands for.

I gotta think people would notice all the noise and destruction going on at Bruce Wayne's house.

Well the people of Gotham never were particulary bright...

This series just bored me.

Bruce Wayne doesn't have neighbors.

Batman gets to talk a lot? He had, what, 4 lines?

I said counting the other issues they been in as well, Einstein. Not sure what was the point of dragging in WW to stand around and say nothing so far. Do that in another book and you'd hear the uproar.

Good thing I decided to wait for the trade on this one it seems.

+1. Not because this sounds bad, but I gave up due to the delays. The first few issues of this were actually pretty good!

@black_arrow:

So? Cars exploding and superman crashing into the cove made noise and probably tremors as well.

Posted by HushoftheWind

So Superman get's Thor like Armor now!? we get to see more of it, im pretty sure in couple of days it it will be in the battle forums.....A LOT.

Posted by Jayc1324

@pperspectiveandreality: Bruce Wayne has no neighbors. He doesn't even live in Gotham, Wayne Manor is just outside of the city limits.

Posted by Pperspectiveandreality

@jayc1324:

So sounds an seismic activity stay outside city limits? No one can see or her explosions and no one would notice superman crashing into the ground at what would have to have been at least hypersonic speeds?

@squalleon:

I really want to love this series but it feels like Lee's delays have seriously hurt Snyder's story. A dropped plot point and an awful issue 6...I would love to read his original pitch but Jim Lee has hurt this series. A shame considering other artists could do just as good if not better than him. I feel bad for Snyder that he had to change his story because of Lee. Could have been one amazing story.

Posted by TheFirstLantern

i really enjoyed this but im pretty sure snyder will get frack for putting wonder woman in there to fight without explaining how she knew or whatever. i just know there will be complaints about it.

If the seismic activity were that big all the cave would have fall.

@black_arrow:

Just like you can hear someone shooting fireworks from far away I'm sure you could here cars exploding and superman crashing into the ground. There's no way that goes unnoticed by anyone. It's not a big deal but it is a plothole

No actually the sound from the cars would stay on the cave. And Superman crashing into the ground wouldn't make that much noise. Wayne manor is far from Gotham.

Isn't everything a little convenient in this story? WW fights? Really? She gets her ass handed to her and no lines since she appeared. Imagine that. WW of all people. She might as well been a Batmobile.

I'm loving the series so far, and though the delays are annoying, I'm still gonna pick up every issue.

Can we please make Batman unchained suit his new default Batsuit? It's perfectly in line with the stealthy and tactical fighting style of the character.

So with that I believe Wonder Woman has million consecutive losses under her belt, didn't even speak a word. Luckily for the weaklings Superman came along, he's never failed Wonder Woman before.

Posted by Fastestmanalive

Pretty disappointed. This is my favorite series out there, when it comes out.

But this was by far the worst of the series.

I usually love the combination of Jim Lee and Superman. Makes beautiful visuals but even that was very meh this issue.

Posted by SmashBrawler

I just noticed this is the first Unchained issue that doesn't have like 12 variants.

Edited by longbowhunter

Echoing other comments. The delays on this book really killed my interest. Apart from that, Gundam suit Superman was over the top in the worst, most ridiculous way. Scott Snyder is a great storyteller and in earlier issues of Unchained it showed. But this was not my favorite book this week. I will say the "Penny for your thoughts" scene was pretty awesome.

Posted by HolySerpent

Great issue but i wish Wonder Woman got her licks in

Edited by IronAngelX

DUDE! I've waited so long for this book and it was awesome the armor that Superman wore when he went out to face General Lane was awesome. Batman's suit was boss too. Totally wish that both of those would have been playable in the Injustice game.

The delays on this really killed a lot of my interest in the book, although I'll stick out the last two issues. DC should have just switched artists in the first place instead of catering to Lee's schedule

She sucker punched wraith with a pwnny. He sucker punched her with a dinosaur. Then he kicked her. People need to chill the eff out with the" omg she got her ass kicked" stuff. Don't be....use your brains guys.

Posted by thc1138

This series is awful. It makes Superman look like a big wimp.

What's the plot point that was dropped due to Jim Lee?

Posted by mrmarky

How exactly did Wrath know where the Batcave was?

Same. Once I saw the delays after issue #5, I called it quits. Getting the trade(s) sounds better than waiting several months to get a single issue out of Jim Lee. Then I can also get the whole story instead of forgetting about it, as mentioned in the review.

Does anyone know if they intend on releasing two trades for this? Amazon lists Unchained as only containing 7 issues, but the run in 9 isn't it?

I wouldn't trust amazon if I were you. DC doesn't even have a solicit for volume 1.
And it seems unlikely that DC is gonna put a second volume for 2(and a half since the 9th issue is extended) issues only.

Surely something will be out for Christmas won't it? Actually I am half tempted to buy this issue and 5 & 6, which I missed.
