Superman Unchained #4 - Bullets Review

4

While Superman is busy fighting for his life, who's watching over Jimmy and Lois? Scott Snyder and Jim Lee are cranking up the heat in Superman's universe.

The Good

Why is Lex Luthor such a great villain? Scott Snyder shows us in this issue. This is a case where less is more. We've seen many big and epic Lex Luthor schemes unfold but through simple dialogue, you get a great sense of who Lex is. In almost a classic tying-the-vicitm-to-the-railroad-tracks, we see Lex at his best. You'll hang on every word as you try to figure out what he's up to this time.

The main portion of the story deals with Superman and Wraith fighting Ascension. It's a strange dynamic as we don't his whole story. He's threatened Superman yet is also offering some highly useful advice. The battle is laid out in pure Jim Lee style. We get a lot of big splashy images with some high octane action.

Another great thing is having Superman's story separate from Lois and Jimmy's portion. Too often the dangers the supporting characters face is directly related to Superman. With Superman having his hands full, it's great seeing the others, especially Lois, have the opportunity to have their portions the story fleshed out without any interruption from Superman. And wait until you see the cliffhanger ending. Dustin Nguyen's art captured the mood perfectly.

The Bad

The unfortunate thing is with Villains Month, it's been a while since we had issue #3. This issue is worth the wait but it has interrupted the flow of the story and action a little.

We're getting some different mysteries thrown at us. With Lex's motives and the unknown nature of Wraith, we can't really be sure what's going on. Throw in what we do know about Wraith and the little bombshell thrown at us at the end, there is a little head scratching going on.

The Verdict

Scott Snyder and Jim Lee continue heating up their take on Superman. It feels like it's been a while since the previous issue due to Villains Month but we're back and the mysteries continue to unfold. The gang's all here and thankfully we get to see separate stories for Superman, Lois and Jimmy. There's no telling what Lex will do next or what Wraith's motivations are which is part of what makes this all exciting. Now that Villains Month is over, hopefully we'll be back on track and be able to sit back and enjoy the show.

I haven't been that impressed with this series so far, it's been okay.

I thought Greg Pak's Action Comic was better and more fun to see young shirt & jeans superman.

This is prob my favorite superman series in a long time. Totally worth the wait but on the flip side having to wait did make me need to go back and read issue 003 again

4/5. Good issue. Love this series. But I was hoping Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Cyborg would cameo since the solicits mentioned Superman would call for help and those guys were brought up in previous issues.

Going to be my last issue of this series if the name Snyder was not printed on the cover people would say this series is mediocre at best. This comic was all hype and has failed to deliver plain and simple.

Great issue

There seems to be a lot of really mixed opinions on this series. While only four issues in, I personally think it's the best and most entertaining Superman story I've read in a long while. Great cliffhanger, I only hope we don't have to wait another 2-3 months for the next issue.

its in canon to the new 52, but will not crossover into the of titles. Its pretty good, and honestly so is some of lobdells stuff, but some his just bad. Also its not very feat heavy, but definitely read Morrison's action comics run.

It had been so long since issue #3, I felt pretty lost for a while. I like the mystery Snyder is cooking up. But if this book doesn't find some sort of normal schedule it'll completely kill the reveals for me.

Have to agree with this, it's felt like AGES since issue 3 came out. I swear I saw somewhere that issue 5 comes out at the end of this month, would like someone to confirm for me though, please.

@enigmalantern: Unfortunately, issue 5 is currently solicited for January 1, yes January, not December. Issue 6 is currently solicited for January 29. These dates came from Diamonds previewsworld site.

@captainhoopla: DC has been messing around with the solicit dates for quite a few titles of late. Very frustrating.

Really?

Comic Vine released a list of January solicits for Superman in the Superman forum and there was no Superman Unchained on that list, as apparently Jim Lee needed more time or something along the lines of that and therefore there would be no Unchained issue in January.

Getting majorly confused and frustrated with this whole thing, I love the series but they're not helping it much with all these delays. Had to remove the cobwebs off issue 3 to have a better understanding of what was going on in issue 4 this week.

I liked it. This series just needs to keep going (not be consistently late).
