Superman Family Adventures #1

4

From the creative team that brought us TINY TITANS, it's time to check out the adventures of Superman, Supergirl, Superboy and even Krypto. Get ready for some quality all-age fun and excitement.

The Good

Like many, I was deeply saddened when it was announced that TINY TITANS would be coming to an end. For fifty issues, we had a great comic packed with an enormous amount of characters. The best thing was that the title was perfectly acceptable for comic fans of all ages. Thankfully, Art Baltazar and Franco are back together with SUPERMAN FAMILY ADVENTURES.

Comic books should be fun and entertaining. There is a time for serious reading but Baltazar and Franco know how to make a comic book truly fun. This is a great chance for younger readers to get to know who Superman, Lois Lane and all the others are. If they've been reading TINY TITANS, they will already be familiar with Supergirl and Superboy (and most likely Krypto). Seeing fight robots invading Metropolis could only be made this fun and exciting by Baltazar and Franco. We don't have many great comics for kids and I cannot express how wonderful it is to see DC continue the vibe we've seen before.

My eight-year-old daughter (who sometimes writes her own reviews here) loved the issue as well. She was a big fan of TINY TITANS and wasn't sure if she'd like this series as much. It turned out she enjoyed it more. When I asked her why, she said she liked that the story was longer. In TINY TITANS there were often shorter stories that sometimes tied together. She was still bummed when the issue ended (she always wants more) but dug that it was a longer adventure.

With the disappointment I've had in a certain other SUPERMAN comic, it's great to have this book to fill my Superman needs.

The Bad

I have to wonder if other non-Superman characters will be involved. The beauty of TINY TITANS was the vast number of characters that could be used and rotated into the adventures. I shouldn't doubt the creators but I have to wonder how long they can come up with fun and humorous Superman stories. I do like Superman but what if we could have had the Batman Family Adventures instead?

My daughter was hoping to see Streaky the Supercat. No sign of him here.

The Verdict

If you know any young readers or are young at heart yourself, you'll want to check this out. Comic books don't need to be and shouldn't be completely serious all the time. Art Baltazar and Franco have mastered the art of writing all-age comics. It's a shame that TINY TITANS ended but this series will fill that void. We'll have to see how long the Superman characters can hold up this series but my eight-year-old daughter was immediately won over by it. Buy the comic and share it with a young reader in your life or keep it for yourself and return to a time when comics were fun and innocent.
