Superior Spider-Man #31 - Goblin Nation Conclusion

4

It's the series finale. Does that mean it's really the end of SUPERIOR Spider-Man?

The Good

Whether or like the idea or not, SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN is coming to an end. We've known it was coming since soon we'll see the new AMAZING SPIDER-MAN relaunch. Last issue Doc Ock made his move to help this happen but of course we can't help but remain skeptical. As a final issue, this concludes the Goblin Nation story, answers a lot of questions, and sets up the next phase for the characters.

Peter Parker fans will rejoice in seeing the return of the original costume. It's all a little surreal, especially with how fast it feels this turn around has occurred. There's plenty of craziness involved and Spider-Man has to deal with that along with trying to pick up where SpOck left things for him. There is a nice big feel to the story as we see Spidey go from scene to scene, trying to sort through the Goblin's attack. The run ins he has with others is cool. What will happen with Spider-Man 2099? The Avengers? Mary Jane? All this and more are answered here.

Dan Slott throws some curve balls our way. The story with the Goblin may be over but it does open some interesting doors. With Peter Parker back, he'll also have his hands full trying to sort everything out. If that wasn't enough, there's also a fourteen-page back-up by Christos Gage dealing more with the fallout from the events in this final issue. Again, it's a great way to sort through the craziness we've seen as well as help set the stage for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Giuseppe Camuncoli delivers the art in the main story. He has a lot of ground to cover and he adds to the big scope feeling of the story. He captures the look of New York City in the chaos of the attacks and gives plenty of detail to the rubble from each battle.

Note: You also get Dan Slott and Mike Allred's SILVER SURFER story from the ALL-NEW MARVEL NOW! POINT ONE issue.

The Bad

It's funny because there will be those saddened by the shift back to Peter Parker. There is the feeling that it all happens rather quickly. You could argue that it's taken 30 issues but in the last issue, the battle between Peter and Otto happened so quickly. Peter does get the chance to talk to a couple friends and associates. They're well aware of what the life of a superhero is but the conversations were really short and they were more than willing to quickly accept the explanation.

While I do dig Camuncoli's art, some characters, such as Aunt May or Mary Jane, looked a little off compared to recent depictions here.

The Verdict

Sadly, this marks the end of SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN. Many may have been waiting for the return of Peter Parker but there is a feeling we could have seen some more SpOck stories to be told. Dan Slott and Christos Gage do a great job in wrapping up the storyline but at times it felt a little too sudden. SpOck will be missed but, of course, we will be celebrating the return of the AMAZING Spider-Man as well. Goblin Nation reaches a satisfying conclusion and there will be repercussions to be dealt with. You owe it to yourself to check out how SUPERIOR Spider-Man's story ends.

I really don't care with #31's problems. I missed Peter so much, ergo I'm so thrilled having him back.

I'm not sure but when Spidey comes back and see 2099, he explains my that Doc Ock was controlling his brain

2099 response is something like "Thats crazy enough to make sense" or something

Oh and Green Goblin is Norman with plastic surgery to look like some Alch Mex dude

And Goblin Nations all Normies fault dammit!

Otto's gone, SSM is over.....PARTY TIME!!!

I can't wait to see Peter in the new ASM. I couldn't stand Otto, he made for a boring, cliché, pretentious, all-around horrible excuse for a hero.

Not really , The ''consiquences'' will bring new people that will be forgotten just the same.

Personally I didn't like how they ended it with Mary Jane and Carlie ''running away'' for ''safer'' lives while Anna Marie still loves the WRONG Peter. I don't know about you guys but that doesn't bode well for the future since we probably see Peter dealing with Anna while Mary Jane and his 'cool black' boyfriend living the life...

And yes , I am still pissed about the whole Mephisto thing and these type of consiquences only makes that retcon worse.

At least they tied the 2099 and Amazing in the end even though it was a bit contrieved. Creating a new 'Norman-Harry mix ' out of Normie and creating Alchamax. For God sake though , is there no-one sane in the Osborn family , even Liz getting crazy enough to let the city burn just give his tainted son more power to ruin the future... I thought she knew better. We don't need a Joffrey Osborn dammit.

Ok , I am done with the spoiler rant. I guess I am happy to see the good old Peter back.

The final issue was such a disappointment to me.

I think Spidy defeated to quickly Norman. It didn't had any climax., didn't have any major consequence for any character.

Sad that this series will end too soon, but the good thing is, that Dan Slott will write the new series. I joined the 616 universe from "One more day" and it was a really bad run until Dan came with big time. The biggest problem with this universe is the status quo, which is because of the most of the fans don't want change. They want the same old stories without any consequence. But I really don't understand that, why don't they read fanfiction then? mean really, what big thing happened in this universe until Dan came? Gwen died, Harry became goblin had a child, Clones, Carlie came to the picture and that's almost all of it. The best version of Spider-Man is definitely the ultimate version, which had the most reasonable, lovely characters, the best villains, the truly amazing story which wasn't the same old crap that the main universe was.

But with Big Time, the there came the thing where fan fiction ended, and the character and the story started to evolve, like in real life. SpOck was arrogant, condescending, but he did a better job at being a spider-man than Peter ever did. Even though Otto made some bad choices, the Superior Spider-Man was the best thing that could have happened to the 616 universe: change, different aspects, evolving, moving on... So the stuff what Dan already did since big time, but that was his biggest and best even with it's tiny flaws, especially with the last issue. 3/5

Goodbye Superior Spider-Man! You had a great run, I'm glad to have Pete back though. I wonder what's going to happen to "his" relationship with Anna Maria, I actually think Pete should give it a shot, she's nice and way less shallow than Carlie or hell maybe even Mary Jane.

Did anyone else find it completely effin' ridiculous that Norman was able to escape by just running away? When there were two Spider-men present? And he had no longer had the enhanced physicals that he used to? And that one of these Spider-men could have easily used his spider sense to track him down?

Whatever. A completely average issue that was as bereft of satisfying climax as the rest of Slott's painfully average run.

OMG Yes, I hated that he just ran away without any of the two Spider-Men stopping him, it was so bad I had to laugh at this almost Batman 60's trope of the villain running away. When he was probably just a web shoot away.

And it wouldn't be so bad if he still had his powers. Then at least his getaway could have been a little bit believable, but instead we have a 55 year old business man managing to just straight up run away from two super heroes just because they were distracted for half a second. Slott apparently can't write a competent Peter to save his life.

I get where you are coming from, I have a love hate relationship with Slott's writing but now it seems his Spider-Man is going in circles and it might be for the best to have a shake up in writing and direction with someone new. Personally I would love Kelly Sue Deconnick take over Spidey.

I agree. With that it brought so much change and variety in the Spider-verse. Sigh, it was bad writing that made Otto unlikable. They wanted him to be arrogant and not grow as to rush Pete back. Otto wasn't perfect. He was a flawed hero, and that was what made him readable. The Status Quo is back. People keep on saying "not really", well, when everyone is used to Peter there can only be so much change before fans demand it back to the same. I'm beginning to get wary of this MJ + Peter for life shtick. I started reading Spider-man again with Spider-island, and I became more engaged when Superior was launched. Sadly, these changes are cash-grabs.

@fragmentmind: Spidey has not been with MJ for close to 7 years. If anything people are still pissed off that they lost 50 plus years of character evolution that was tossed out because Joey Q could not handle the fact people grow up and get married and have kids. That we confront our morality and Peter should be no different.

This status quo of nothing changing that people are tired of was put firmly into place during BND and I think it's time we leave it stop with the gimmicks and let Peter grow up.

Pros: Peter's back. The exchanges between Pete and Miggy were cool. The Goblin reveal made sense. Norman without his powers but sane is interesting.

Cons: He got away by just running? One panel and he's gone? MJ left him again, possibly permanently? (won't cry for Carlie)

@shadowtaker: Mmm yeah something along those lines is exactly what I meant. No letting Peter grow up is not selfish at all, keeping him trapped in a constant cyclical of nothingness like he has been for the past 7 years because one man at a company could not handle the fact the character was growing up with the readers is selfish.

Spider-Man has not been the A superstar he is supposed to be for Marvel since BND I commend Slott on what he has been trying to do but it took a gimmick like Superior to bring attention and sales back to him. So obviously fans of all ages are sick of the devolution of Peter Parker.

Loved this issue, however I would have preferred to have more time with Anna Marie than MJ and Carlie. That final panel where Peter acknowledges Otto and her relationship was crushing. I really hope Ock comes back in Spider-Verse due to the time incident.

Well, this was my jumping OFF issue. Slott was a hack and there is no way I'm reading anything drawn by Ramos.

Soooo many issues and soooo many clone sagas, One More Days and this travesty. At least we had the last bit of fun with the remark about the handbag. Why can't we have this Spidey back instead of the angst and the "old Parker luck" coming up every single issue.

Lastly, HOW is it possible Osborn escaped? I agree. WHY do they keep bringing this guy back?? Enough already!!! And how is it all his powers were gone, yet Carlie had "residual effects"? Whatever...

Goodbye Spidey, you will be sorely missed! You had been my favorite superhero for decades.

Maybe see you in a TPB someday down the road...

It's been a great run. I'm looking forward to Amazing now, but hope it doesn't quickly return to the same old status quo. I agree with most that too much happened too quickly in the final two issues, it probably could have used one more.

Now, what I find particularly funny. There are still a lot of people that like to try to trash this series every chance they get. Does that make them idiots for trying to trash something they haven't even been reading, or even bigger idiots for continuing to buy and read a book they hate?

The only real complaints I had with the issue were with the Green Goblin.

1. I really don't care for the whole Goblin face swap thing, I thought that was kind of dumb and wasted panels to be honest

2. He got away in like one panel that easily? Honestly I was kind of confused for a sec like one panel he's there and the other he's not. I know Liz shocked Pete but It seemed like he just walked off or something lol

I loved the story, it was great to have Spidey back to his old self. And while I held with bated breath to finally see Peter and Mary Jane reunited, Marvel continued to once again piss me off. Let's take one of the Most Popular, Most Recognized couples in all of comicdom and drive a wedge between them. Oh, and to add insult to injury let's pair her off with the Main Universe version of Miles Morales. Bravo Marvel, bravo. Speaking of which, until Ultimate MJ b itch slaps her Main Universe self and tells her how lucky she is to still have Peter, DON'T make mine marvel (purposely lower cased to express my Anger and Frustration) !

My feelings on this: "It's not the destination, but the journey". Although I'm extremely displeased with the details on Peter's return (his soul died in Ock's body, but somehow a 'copy' or memory lingered on like a cockroach inside his own body),(how Peter conveniently wasn't aware of current happenings like Parker Industries) and the Goblin reveal (Is he Osborn?: Yes! No! Maybe! Sort of!), reading Superior Spider-Man for the last year has definitely been a fun ride. As much as I'm a life-long Peter Parker/Spidey fan, I could've handled Otto in the web-slinger suit for another year or two.
