Superior Spider-Man #30 - Goblin Nation Part 4 of 5

4

The end is near. Things aren't looking too good for SUPERIOR Spider-Man as his war against the Goblin Nation continues.

The Good

We all know what's coming. Soon Peter Parker will return as Spider-Man and this series will end, giving way to the return/relaunch of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. The fun part is seeing how it's going to happen.

For months we've seen Doc Ock act as the SUPERIOR Spider-Man. He's taken on some new tactics and did do things that Spider-Man never could. But, of course, there was a price. And it just might now be time for Otto to pay it.

Dan Slott and Christos Gage fill the issue with more developments and repercussions and the story unfolds. What's going to happen to Spider-Man 2099? What about Jonah's decision to unleash untested Spider-Slayers on the city? What is the Green Goblin really up to? Who is going to live and who is going to die?!?

This has all be a grand adventure and, in many ways, it's going to be sad to see the series end. Dan Slott is setting things up so there will likely be plenty of threads carrying over into the new AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Giuseppe Camuncoli has his work cut out for him here. There is so much action he gets to draw. Seeing SpOck and Spider-Man 2099 fighting side by side is really cool. The mindscape scenes are pretty rad.

The Bad

Suddenly things feel like they're moving a little quickly. SpOck has always been full of arrogance but in one particular area here (which I won't spoil), it feels like he gives up too quickly and easily. Part of me feels like it's a trick. It's understandable that after everything that's happened with his fight against the Goblin, he feels he has no choice. It's just a bit of a 180 and almost feels too easy for what has to happen next. Obviously there is still more to see.

The Verdict

The end may be near for SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN but the fight against the Goblins is far from it. Dan Slott is moving SpOck's story towards its end and you can't help but wonder if we'll be seeing more twists along the way. You will be glued to each page but one big development almost feels like it happens too quickly. This is something we'll have to wait until next month to see how it all plays out. You won't want to miss this issue. This is a big moment for Spider-Man and Doc Ock. This series keeps putting a smile on my face with each issue.

@urbanchill: I agree completely. I was really disappointed. This entire series has been about Doc Ock's ego, then for the sake of plot convenience, he decides, "Nah screw it, I suck you do it Peter" over the course of like 4 pages? It feels like such a crappy climax to such an extremely good series. More specifically, to me it feels like a waste of a year's worth of great stories. I really don't know if this final issue can do anything to change my feelings on the matter.

did anybody else think this issue sucked ? everything happened wayyyyy too quickly and ock just gave up his body and consciousness that easily to peter

typically the big reveal is actually surprising but the whole freaking issue actually was lead to peter getting his body back

I only have paid attention to this series honestly because Spider-man is my favorite super-hero, but I got a question about Peter's return -is the Peter Parker that was alive before the entire Superior Spider-man series the same one to come back now? I have searched for an answer online but know one has talked about this. Either no one cares or the answer is obvious and I'm stupid! My opinion is that Ock and Peter never switched minds. Nothing was ever swapped between them - EVER! Doc rewrote his brain patterns on Peter's brain, most likely leaving Peter underneath, which would perfectly explain "Ghost Peter" because NO ONE EVER ASKED HOW HE GOT THERE. Slott said that these were the memories of Peter Parker but how did the "form" a conciseness? Memories are a part of the brain that allows people to remember things, they don't suddenly come to life, know what I mean? Doc rewrote each others brains probably thinking that it was the best way for him to continue his "life". I am asking for others' opinion's though. This is what I think but I want to know what everyone else believes; please comment.

Me too :/

I think/hope that this is part of a larger plan by Spock. I'm hoping he gets his own body, maybe a clone... and gets his own series at some point!

Sigh. I really enjoyed this but it's kind of sad that it has to end this way. I almost don't want to read the last issue because I pretty much know how it's going to go. Superior Spidey was interesting because you knew Otto was going to fail eventually but seeing him succeed in a few key spots was what made the book worthwhile.

Now Peter's coming back and of course he's going to take care of business again, and again, and again. At the very least we finally get to see an old school Green Goblin vs Spidey showdown that has been sorely missing in 616 as of late. I sort of wish Otto and Gobby just had one truly even fight instead of Octavius getting completely and utterly schooled by Norman's prep skills. Alas all good things must end and I will miss this series a lot. It was the most interested I've been in a Spider-Man comic in a long time. I was getting choked up at the end of this issue.

yes it did seem kind of sudden. but remember ock is desperate and this has been going on for several issues. it would be awesome to see ock come back after this as a hero. this series was just too good to let him go.

Hard to believe this is actually gonna end. But I don't think this is the last of Ock because if it were, than the goodbye would of been way longer than just "Here's your body back, I messed up. Fix my mess." Also, who took Ock's corpse from the grave and where will Ock's conciousness go too?

Predicted just about the same. Ock was going to need Peter to take care of this. Even though it moved quickly, I honestly thought this issue was great. I hope marvel brings Ock back as some sort of anti-hero. I also gotta give credit where credit is due. I was a huge hater with the start of this series. Gave it a chance and loved everything about it. Thanks for the ride, SpOck. But, I am pumped to see Pete back....

I've loved this series. Best Spider-Man, or Doc Ock if you prefer, story in a decade. I have high expectations for the next issue to be epic. Gotta admit though, I'm a bit worried Anna Maria isn't going to make it.

As I finished reading Superior Spider-Man 30, I find myself feeling sad. Even sadder than when I read Amazing Spider-Man 700. I'm really going to miss this series.
