Superior Spider-Man #3 - Everything You Know is Wrong

5

The developments continue with this 'different' Spider-Man and could someone be catching on that something's not right?

The Good

Dan Slott has taken the idea that many were outraged over and is crafting an fascinating story. The first two issues showed some new developments but here you really get a feel for what we could see in the coming issues. The whole notion of Doc Ock trying to be a superior Spider-Man is both humorous and interesting. This is more than just Doc Ock trying to be Spider-Man. Like it or not, he's being influenced by Spider-Man's memories and sense of doing good.

This whole concept almost feels like a science experiment. While this Spider-Man may be making some strides and improvements, there will also be some repercussions for when Peter (inevitably) returns. With a more violent or less lenient approach in dealing with the villains, Peter is going to have a lot to deal with whenever he makes his way back. There will also be the public perception and those of close characters like Mary Jane and Carlie Cooper.

This issue brings some great interaction between Spider-Man and J. Jonah Jameson. There's also some interaction with Carlie that needs to be seen. Throw in the fact that Spider-Man has to face Vulture, Ock's former partner in crime, we're looking at a new sort of game. Seeing the reaction to Spider-Man's tactics from others including Peter is priceless. Spider-Man is making strides in some areas but doing highly questionable things in others. All this adds a new level to reading these Spider-Man stories.

These are the aspects of this series that I'm really digging. We've had so many (great) Spider-Man stories and this is giving us the chance to really explore who and what Spider-Man is. Whether things revert back in a month or a year, there's plenty of fallout to be seen.

Ryan Stegman continues to get better and better each issue. The level of detail he puts in and the subtle differences in Spider-Man's posture and body language is remarkable. Whether it's drawing an arrogant Spider-Man, creepy henchmen of the Vulture or flashbacks to Doc Ock's childhood, each moment has its own unique feel.

The Bad

As compelling as these stories are, it is still taking some getting used to having a different Spider-Man as the lead. The scary thing is, Slott is making us start to actually like this Spider-Man. That can't be good, can it?

The Verdict

Last issue gave us a fun (and slightly creepy) look at Doc Ock try to navigate through Peter Parker's personal life. This issue, we're seeing the action kick up a notch. This new version of Spider-Man is a slight enigma as we're seeing Ock do things for his own good while also continuing to prove he can be a better Spider-Man than Peter was. There is quite a bit of inner conflict as we start to see Ock in a different light and you can't help but admire some of the things he's bringing to the table. Stegman is a beast in terms of delivering amazing art. He doesn't just draw Spider-Man with a slightly different costume, you can see by the way he stands and moves that there is a difference here. There may still be some outcry over the changes in this title but Slott (and Stegman) are showing there is more to this than many gave them credit for. We're seeing many opportunities to view Spider-Man in a different light and we know it can't last forever. What's important is to enjoy these stories for what they are as they are giving us something different and it's been a blast reading them. It's almost like reading Spider-Man for the first time.

@KingdomCome: Yes, we tend to review comics we actually like. Those tend to be at the top of our reading lists. With limited time, do you want us to seek out really bad comics to review? Our reviews clearly explain why we enjoyed them. The beauty of this site is each and every user here has the opportunity to write their own review based on their own opinions. The more reviews an issue gets, the bigger the scope of variation there is.

This is easily one of my top books along with Batman and Hawkeye. Slott is taking the Spider-equation and changing things up.

Sure, some fans may be disgruntled grumps about the entire thing, but if they're unwilling to come along for the ride and trash-talk, we'll see them later. Only, we all know they'll stick around to complain until things return to the way they like them.

I don't like this Spider-man at all.... ive said that this is the stupidest story in comic book history I don't care if the stories are good. I dony buy the idea that one of greatest supervillians would begin to try to be a superhero its stupid....its like going on a first date and the girl has bad breath and sells drugs im never going to hang around to find out that she deep down is a good person.

I'd like a link for this.

And I love how objective these reviews have been. You can tell G-Man is reading with the story in mind, not the perverse idea of Spider-Man being somebody different. With the art reflecting the situation I am almost tempted to finally pick this book up. It sounds like it is the whole package.

I just reread the review... It's three years old and poorly written. If you can find it, you win an award. It's the only 0.5/5 I've ever given.

I'm still deeply troubled by some of the themes/teases in the first two books, and when controversial/widely-criticized books consistently receive five stars, it does lend itself to a bit of cynicism for the rating system. I think pretending otherwise is a bit naive. That said, I fully acknowledge that this issue sounds like it actually deserves the good rating, and is finally truly capitalizing on the positive potential of the Spider-Ock premise. The dynamic with Vulture sounds particularly interesting.

Really enjoying this series but I'm still a little irked that Peter doesn't have to wait in comic book limbo like other heroes. They made ghost Peter a lot less prominent than he was in the last issue which is a good thing but I'm not completely sold on him sticking around. This creative team even made a bad ass Vulture to tangle with Otto on both a physical and psychological level. The die is cast. I love Superior Spidey.

I really dug this issue as well. Tons of symbolism, and we see how Peter's ghost presence actually can hang around plus some Doc Ock backstory pushing the hand of Doc Spidey.

Plus, there is a great cliff-hanger. Slott just sold me on the series, finally. 5/5

I'm enjoying this series more than i thought i would.  The story is just intriguing. The look into Ock's past as a child was sad and it made you feel for him when he confronted Vulture. Ghost Peter learning new things along the way that just sets up future issues down the road. Just overall a solid story.

Peter's ghost is the only reason why i keep coming back to read the mess. I think Slott knows that and he's preying on that. And i hate, ABSOLUTELY HATE, saying this, but i think i know the direction this going now. I think Peter is going to sympathize with Ock's past and let him be. We already got a taste of that in this issue with the whole Ock's father beating him flashback. UGH, its not looking good for an "Amazing" return.

This book is the worst of all. Honestly, who still cares that Ock is Spiderman? NOT ME! thats for sure. Seriously, to me it just lost it's edge. I never bought the concept of Peter wondering around through limbo when I first heard of it, now it's just like "man, he's still in limbo" WTF are you doing marvel? Snoozing at those meetings? Probably. Figures good books like Defenders & Avengers Academy get the axe while this complete HORSE SHIT is being printed in thousands.

@MikeStark: Have you even read one of the stories. I mean not the reviews, but a comic. Just pick up one of these stories. Yes Otto is creepy in the first one, but at least Peter is being Peter. It is far better than One More Day, when Quesada made Peter act completely out of character, so he could get rid of MJ. I have no idea of AA but from what I heard Defenders was not selling. I can sympathize that you are pissed that Peter is dead, everyone can understand that feeling. But if you hate the idea, do not commet on the review, just to voice your hate. Do you really think anyone will change their mind just cause you typed in capital letters. I know what I am saying is probably not much better than you are. But at least I am not spread hatred, on the Internet, we do not need more of that.

I can't believe I'm saying it, and I was never a hater of this idea, but I'm actually enjoying Ock as Spider-Man more than Peter. He's showing what Peter could have come up with but never did.

Huh.

I don't think the troll comment should be a complete surprise. You've used the phrase "good books like Defenders & Avengers Arena" in so many posts since joining that 1. you seem to have a bit of an agenda and 2. one can't help but think those are the only cancellations you're really upset about. Not that you haven't made any valid points, but...it does come across as a less-than-completely-genuine attempt to actually comment on the topic itself as opposed to derail the topic into a rant about those books being cancelled. Coupled with your unwillingness to abide by a language code which has been repeatedly pointed out to you, well...

Let's just say, if you're not a troll, perhaps you should consider taking a moment and reevaluating the way you've stepped into the community. Try for some more positive posts. Trust me, I know monomania when I see it.

How do these keep getting 5 stars? It wasn't as horrible as the first 2 yeah, but this wasn't a good comics..... What a shock that the way Peter reacted to Otto killing Vulture was really uncharacteristic because he didn't seem mad or I don't know GUILTY about it. Just kinda said "Oh no!" basically....

The flash back was also pointless because it made it seem like he was trying to insert more good into Otto's character with the whole kid killing thing. I mean Doc Ock would NEVER kill any kids....it's not as if there was a whole story line where Doc Ock tried to get all of spider-man's villains to kill Harry Osborn's baby or anything....

X-Men books are such trash IMO. They always start off with a good story. I was honestly interested in the original younger members coming to the present but it just got soooooooooooooo boring. It just drawed, on & on & on. Good for you if you have the patience, But I can't stand this sh*t. I love the characters but the storytelling to me is WEAK. and so is Bendis.

True. You want to kill Peter then grow a pair and kill him, Honestly this wouldn't have been such a bad way to go. You can't win em all Pete. Plus he would have had a kick ass funeral. This semi-conscious ghost stuff is killing me with this series. Everything about this book seems so ham handed and forced. There sure isn't anything subtle about Superior Spider-Man. This book is average at best, I don't have the money to buy "average" comics.

I'm dropping this. It's just not good enough.

This comic certainly has its flaws, but I'm willing to overlook some negligible discrepancies for what is certainly becoming a full, interesting, and well-written comic book.

Did anybody else notice that horrifying letter in the letters page at the end? It's full of vitriol and typical nerd-rage about Peter's death and the lack of heroism in modern comics, but then at the end the author essentially says "you can print whatever you want. I won't be around to see it." Signed <Mr. So and So.> 1968 - 2012.....it basically seems like a death-bed letter that Marvel printed for some reason. It made me so sad to think of this guy going to the great beyond full of anger without getting a chance to see this genuinely interesting story that Slott is rolling out.

Superior continues to be fun. Can't see it lasting long, though, unless we're to believe that the Marvel U is populated by morons who don't notice a radical personality switch in someone they know well (his run in with the X-Men in "Avenging" was not convincing at all). And the whole premise will wear thin after a while.

Related to that, I hope Slott doesn't go the predictable route with Carlie Cooper and have her killed while trying to fix Pete, but I can't help but suspect it. She'll leave a clue around that someone else will find later, like Jenny Calendar in Buffy. Think outside the box, Dan.

I can acknowledge how well-written and paced this series is. I loved the first three issues.

My issue with it is that Peter isn't gone and we're already on the come-back trail for a character who isn't even gone. It's like nothing happened. At least Johnny Storm was GONE when he died. That's why I can't support this. The pay-off is most likely going to be Peter returning, which would've been predictable enough, but he's not even gone.

Related to that, I hope Slott doesn't go the predictable route with Carlie Cooper and have her killed while trying to fix Pete, but I can't help but suspect it. She'll leave a clue around that someone else will find later, like Jenny Calendar in Buffy. Think outside the box, Dan.

Did you just tell the guy who made Doc Ock into Spider-man to think outside of the box?

Are you serious?

@InnerVenom123: Yes. Slott's a good writer but sometimes predictable. Brain-swap drama is nothing new.
