Superior Spider-Man #14 - A Blind Eye

5

Spider-Man goes for the jugular of New York’s crime, and he’s taking things to a level never before realized.

The Good

The “superior” in Superior Spider-Man was often thought of as a cheap, and some thought underhanded jab, prefix to keep up Spidey books’ love of alliteration, but very early in the run, it became clear Doc Ock had appropriated it for another, specific use: he was going to be a better Spider-Man than Peter Parker ever was, regardless of what price he had to pay. “Better,” in Otto’s mind, seems to mean “most efficient,” though certainly not more compassionate, as he has now demonstrated his use of lethal force on two separate occasions. But there’s a new target in his crosshairs: Wilson Fisk’s Shadowland palace in the middle of Hell’s Kitchen. Now that Spider-Man controls the Raft, and has re-purposed it into Spider Island 2, staffed it with his own private army, his first act is to launch an all-out assault on Fisk’s fortress, and he’s taking no prisoners.

Dan Slott took a huge risk when he introduced the idea of Doc Ock as Spidey in Amazing Spider-Man #700, but the reward has been some of the most unique, interesting, and different, web-slinging tales in a very long time. No retcons, horrible secrets from the distant past, or unnecessary twist required, just solid, good storytelling, and that continues into this issue. Slott’s wallcrawler is certainly NOT of the friendly-neighborhood variety, and that trend continues into this issue, as we now see Spidey leveraging his newfound power and authority, but Slott is sure to include signs that all this power may be going to Ock’s head. Near the end of the book, we see a massive confluence of consequences brewing, consequences that even his superior intellect could neither foresee, nor is he likely to be prepared for. It’s also the culmination of something that’s been happening in the periphery of Superior Spider-Man for several issues now and it feels great when it’s finally revealed.

Humberto Ramos tackles the art, a polarizing artist, but one who I fall on the side of loving. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t like him on just any book, but few artists capture the kinetic athleticism and acrobatics of Spider-Man like Ramos does. His exaggerated, wild style lends itself to action, but even the more speech-driven scenes are served as there’s a level of intensity that exists in this issue that makes every panel seem more important than the last. This is especially apparent when Mayor Jameson is shouting at his newfound "ally." Victor Olazaba handles inks with Edgar Delgado on color and both of them do a fantastic job of bringing Ramos’ pencils off the page as both are critical in a book this action heavy. As this is a nighttime book, the colors are actually a little more subdued than we’re used to in a Spider-Man book, but the more mellow palette befits the darker tone that the book achieves perfectly, and the inks ensure that the action is always clear and impactful.

The Bad

There’s very little to dislike in this issue, other than, perhaps, a lack of character development. This is definitely an action issue, and I’m starting to miss the supporting cast, both new and old, that this Superior Spidey has begun to build.

The Verdict

This issue opens with a narration from a citizen of Hell’s Kitchen who’s had to adapt to life underneath the Kingpin’s ever-present shadow, and it gives the reader an excellent view of why people would support such an extreme action against Fisk. This isn’t the Spider-Man we’re used to, so it makes sense he’d have different methods for dealing with a villain of this caliber, and while some fans may balk at people just giving him a pass, when we see into the minds and eyes of the civilians forced to live under the boot of a known criminal overlord, it begins to make more sense why they’d support this new Spider-Man. But Slott isn’t letting Octavius off the hook, as this book shows, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the “superiority” of this Spider-Man may, indeed, only be his own declaration.

Superior is the best cycle of Spiderman since the original Ditko run, and while Slott is telling Spiderman in a completely new way, it is with the same majestic authority and unfettered artisic license that Lee wrote and the same wild enthusiasm and sublime freedom that Ditko drew. The legacy of "The Logo" has not been so honored and alive since Kraven's Last Hunt. Slott is not at all destroying Spiderman ( which had been nothing more than an epic vapor trail since Issue #122 ) he is reinvigorating a mythology that had been all but dead for 40 years. Nothing like this has happened to an original Marvel hero since Steve Rogers was pulled out of the Arctic, and Slott knows it. Fittingly, Slott paid homage to The King with a brilliant Funky Flashman reference, signalling that he knows it is only a matter of time until the first man to write Spiderman like Lee did when he was still a rebel without a cause, becomes the next Kirby, a king forever in exile, betrayed by The Man that the rebel became when the company he conquered became him. It's a story to rival Fidel and Che, Lenin and Trotsky, Bill and Beatrix, Romeo and Mercutio .... well, you get the picture. Now get this. Atlantis has resurfaced true believers. Take a look before it sinks again.

If you don't like it, don't read it. Vote with your wallets not with your keyboards. Also, check out the 700 older issues of ASM featuring Peter Parker, since so many people are wistful for their "golden age" of Marvel.

Marvel (aside from 1610) and DC (pre-52) have become stagnant. I don't want to read another 6-issue throw away arc that does nothing for the series or character. This is interesting. This is worth my money. Something is ACTUALLY happening in a comic book.

Don't you all get tired of the same old crap, month after month? Comics shouldn't be a security blanket. They should be exciting and shake things up. Isn't it great that the main character is someone you've hated over the years trying to be better than the old protagonist, yet on the complete moral opposite? That's insane! That's awesome. I think the thing a few people have is that they like this, but don't want to. They like Otto as Spidey, and that's what makes them angry because it's not the norm. It's out of their comfort zone.

As for that blog post, I stopped reading when he said "I haven’t been buying it, but I’ve been reading it ." Why should I respect someone's opinion on the industry who doesn't want to support it?

And cue angry replies...

yes yes yes yes yes!!! I love this book because I've been reading comics since 1980 or so and I genuinely come to each issue with the sense that, 'I've not seen this before, this is something new' - and I LOVE it!!

I've really been enjoying Superior. I know in a year Peter will be back (maybe sooner), but for me it's an interesting change of pace. It's interesting to watch just how powerful SM really could be if it weren't for his humanity. The truth is, aside for the heavy hitters like Thor or Iron Man, there aren't many characters that can match SM with his combination of brains and physical power when he's not bogged done with crossing any lines. I feel this book has done a good job of showing that. Like another poster wrote, every issue is not a 9/10, but it has been really good.

i liked how this was an assault not a war.
Even when peter comes back i would still want spOck around.

One problem of mine has been that peters life experience made otto a good guy... but that completely undermines ottos life experience. So suddenly all his horrible pain while growing up doesnt matter?

This to the nth degree.

Not only that, but I can actually see the character progression and there are even points in the comic that deal with "once a killer, always a killer" and such. And it's clear Otto is trying to be a much better person while at the same time making more logical decisions.

I love how crazy this book's getting. I really do. Even if Spider-Man is now a jerk, and sort of evil and creepy... I just love it. Things are happening, shit matters and I really get the feeling that things are different now

Haters are gonna hate I guess, but all this talk of voting with wallets makes me just want to let you all know that Superior Spider-Man is currently Marvel's TOP SELLING ONGOING MONTHLY. So lots of people out there are evidently on board with what is happening here. I think it's a quality series and while not every issue is a 9/10 or 10/10, it's definitely a book I look forward to picking up every other week.

I've been waiting for Ock to go full on "Big Brother" on the city. I'm guessing that the Spider-Bots have preprogrammed targets to sweep for? And I'm confused as to why it didn't pick up Hobgoblin.

Also, I'm really loving the new costume. I could have done without the Iron Spider arms, though. Makes it feel like someone recolored a sprite.

The Green Goblin has reprogrammed the Spider-Bots. I think it was shown in a previous issue (maybe 10 or 9?) Clearly that makes them avoid Goblin-related people.

I get tired of the same old stuff, but how is SPock any different than all the other anti-hero books out there? I do read this series, but it doesn't stand out against something like Scarlet Spider or Black Bat. At least before Peter Parker was able to stand out.

Most of the years people said were boring, were also written by Dan Slott.

Superior isn't bad. The Green Goblin stuff is interesting. I don't think it's a book that warrants coming out twice a month. This current issue wasn't bad, but it read like filler. The raft storyline was more interesting.

@inferiorego: You're spot on! You've taken what I have been trying to put in to words and hit the nail on the head when it comes to how the past Spiderman issues have been. When I was a child I grew up loving Spiderman but, as I got older I realized Spiderman wasn't growing up with me if you know what I mean. Nothing has changed really outside of him getting his new job at Horizon Labs it's been the same Peter Parker handling the same almost sophomoric issues since I was a young boy. The character hasn't evolved. I then moved onto Daredevil because I felt that he was kind of the more mature version of Spiderman handling "adult" issues. With Superior Spider-Man stuff is happening now! Huge things! I love Otto as Spider-Man. For the first time in a while this is a more mature Spiderman. He knows to give up on MJ, he's going back for his doctorate, he's created ways to better patrol the city and now he has his own island of minions! Lol! What's not to love?!? I know sadly, that this run is eventually going to come to an end but, I'm going to savor every moment of it. Hopefully when Peter returns he'll learn a few things from Otto and "grow up" a little bit.

I lost interest in Amazing Spider-Man long before SpOck reared his ugly head. I used to read Spider-Man because he was just a regular-ass dude with regular-ass problems that just so happened to have super powers but somewhere a long the line that all changed and Pete turned in to Iron Man in a spider suit, his aunt married a millionaire and cruses around in a private jet, his ex-model girlfriend is now nightclub manager, he works as a world renowned super scientist and when ever he get's in to trouble he ether pulls out some Reed Richards-like tech or just call's in a battalion of Avengers. I'm sorry but non of the interests me in the least and that's why I think Ultimate Spider-Man has been a far better book Peter Parker or not.

This issue was so good it's ridiculous. At first I was not sure where it was going with the Shadowland stuff then as soon as those Spider Destroyers or whatever were revealed my jaw dropped. I've said it before but my favorite part about this book has been how Superior has been fighting more like a tech-focused anti-hero who takes every advantage he can. I just didn't think his tech would be so awesome. I have a few petty gripes with the art. At least one panel had Superior's leg bent in an unnatural way and Fisk had too much of a baby face for a character who has witnessed a lot in the Marvel universe. Other than that the art looked great.

I was a bit disappointed that Superior didn't cut off Fisk's escape route like he did with Spider Slayer but I guess he's just not as familiar with the layout of Shadowland and also The Kingpin is not a character I'm ready to see die just yet. At least with Massacre it was Slott's creation in the first place so he had license to do what he wanted and Smythe has been a dead end for a while. They shouldn't kill off someone like Fisk because he's a badass and a piiiiimp.

The true test for Superior Spidey is going to be the upcoming arc. The Goblin King's scheme has been planted and soon he will spring it on our menacing neighborhood Spider-Man. This will truly be a battle between two of Spider-Man's greatest villains. I'm very much looking forward to seeing Octavius tech clashing with Oscorp tech and see who is the superior villain. It seems like a distinct possibility that Osborn might die in this encounter since people were bitching so much about him in Dark Reign. For the record I loved DR because I knew something wicked was being plotted in that Goblin side of his brain. Imagine all the prep time he's had while lying dormant this whole time. I wonder who the haters will root for on this one. The identity stealing mad scientist murderer or the genocidal rapist dictator freak show. No matter who wins we lose. I love it. If they take the boring predictable route it will be Peter Parker who wins. I simply can not wait for more.

From what I'm getting I see a lot more people dislike this than like it.

Well my decision's been made then. Me no read book.

don't let the vocal minority make your decisions on whether to read a book or not...if you're curious about a book then check out an issue on your own and make your decision after actually reading it....if you do make your decisions based on what other people think then you should know that Superior is Marvel's number 1 selling ongoing month after month so there's definitely more people out there enjoying it than there are people on comic vine b!tching about it every issue despite them saying that they don't read it

This is the out of line part of your reply here. See, this blog post supports a lot of what I think about the title. I gave it until issue 6 but Slott spectacularly (pun intended) failed to capture my attention and instead has been writing his own fan fiction for the past 14 issues. There are plenty of reasons to show that this is what Slott, not anyone else wants to happen and that the entire purpose of this is to take Peter back to where he was at the onset of his creation. Originality much? The only answer to that is no.

Not my post but I do agree with it.

I haven’t been buying it, but I’ve been reading it, and all I can say is, boy, was I wrong when I thought that OMD, BND and OMIT were the worst Spider-Man stories that could possibly be told.

I despise literally every last one of the defining traits of the premise and execution of this temporary-pretending-to-be-permanent status quo.

I detest how Dan Slott forced Peter to job to Otto on every level possible, not only by constantly having Otto show up Peter’s scientific and crime-fighting skills, but also by turning Peter into an irritatingly impotent whiner as a ghost, and then even going so far as to try and give Otto the moral high ground by revealing that Peter would have let a little girl die to save his own life.

I loathe how Slott wrote Otto plotting to bed Mary Jane for three issues as wacky romantic comedy hijinks that we were only supposed to find disturbing because Peter didn’t like the idea of Otto “touching his stuff,” and I abhor how we were supposed to gloss over Otto plotting to commit the rape-by-fraud of Mary Jane because he suddenly had a last-minute deus ex machina change of heart that led to him, yet again, being held up as morally superior to Peter because he recognized that any relationship between any Spider-Man and Mary Jane supposedly could never work.

I despair of how Slott’s irredeemable ineptitude as a writer is passed onto characters who should be competent, when it takes Otto-as-Peter not only talking and acting like a panto villain in his civilian life, but also brutalizing and killing his opponents as a superhero, for anyone to suspect that there’s anything even slightly off about him, after which they either get distracted and forget their misgivings immediately, or else try to verify them via methods that even the characters themselves admit are incompetent, such as having a brain-scan of Otto-as-Peter run by the Avengers WITHOUT any of the super-scientists who could make proper sense of the readings.

Slott’s versions of the Black Widow and Carlie Cooper are especially egregious in that regard, the Black Widow for Slott stealing one of the lines that Joss Whedon wrote for her in the Avengers film, in order to show her tacitly approving of Otto’s more brutal methods, which misses the whole point of the onscreen scene between her and Loki, and Carlie Cooper for refusing to warn Mary Jane that the man she’s dating again, however briefly, is actually a mass-murdering supervillain who’s simply wearing that man’s body and memories like a flesh-suit, but then again, that would require Slott to acknowledge a) the inherently rapey implications of the romance he was teasing between Otto-as-Peter and Mary Jane to tweak the fans, and b) the fact that, even if there hadn’t just recently been an invasion of Earth by an entire race of shape-shifting aliens, who raised humanity’s paranoia levels by impersonating countless well-connected people with apparently remarkable accuracy, Mary Jane has already seen through the Chameleon and Venom and literally more clones of Peter than even Marvel bothered to keep track of during the height of the “Clone Saga,” so there’s no reason that Mary Jane should be this blind to Otto’s deceptions, nor should anyone in the 616 Marvel Universe be even the slightest bit incredulous toward being told that a supervillain has hijacked the life of his sworn archenemy and is impersonating him, but then again, expecting internally consistent logic from Slott’s stories is like expecting him to pen non-hackneyed dialogue that sounds anything like how any actual human being has ever spoken.

And is it even worth pointing out that, in his most recently completed story arc, Slott has reduced J. Jonah Jameson to such a one-dimensional caricature that even the version of the character who commissioned the original Spider-Slayer during the Lee-and-Ditko days would think that the modern Jonah is a cartoonishly buffoonish caricature? Not only can Slott not be bothered to acknowledge that any of these characters have already been shown growing and evolving on the printed pages of the comics that have been published ever since the 1960s, but he can’t even live up to the nuances of Stan Lee’s bombastic portrayals of them back then, so I suppose it’s no wonder that it was too much effort for Slott to spend all of five seconds on Wikipedia to figure out exactly what it is that a mayor can and can NOT do (hint: He can NOT order the execution of a prisoner in a state that does not have the death penalty, and he can NOT order the decommissioning of a prison that falls under the purview of S.H.I.E.L.D. Not even BLOOMBERG could get away with doing that).

But as much as anything else, what I really hate about this whole exercise is that, far from being new or daring or in any way whatsoever creative or innovative, the Superior Spider-Man is simply yet another painful extension of the evolutionary dead end that was already marked out by Civil War and Dark Reign, in which we’re asked to seriously consider that maybe the merciless and sociopathic villains who want to rule humanity might actually be in the right, because Mark Millar and Tom Brevoort flatly stated that the end of Civil War proved the Pro-Reg side to be morally right, after which Brian Michael Bendis defended Norman Osborn being handed the keys to the kingdom in Dark Reign by arguing that Norman’s ruthlessness and insanity made him a more effective superhero than Spider-Man or Captain America, because apparently what Tony Stark did wrong after Civil War was not engaging in enough torture or imprisonment without due process or violations of basic human rights, and now, here’s Dan Slott, insisting in interviews that Otto-as-Peter has just as much right to be regarded as a hero as Wolverine and the Punisher (which ignores the fact that Wolverine and the Punisher have always been anti-heroes, even at their moral best, but I digress), and yes, of course Peter will be brought back, but I will bet you five PayPal dollars that Otto’s hijacking of his life will be used to restore him to his Lee-and-Ditko status quo of being hated and feared by the police and public as Spider-Man, and scorned as a disappointing, unreliable failure even by those closest to him as Peter Parker, and when Peter finally takes back his life from Otto, it will be as truncated, unconvincing and unsatisfying as when Norman Osborn was finally brought down at the end of Dark Reign, because that’s what happens when you have generations of fans, “creators” included, who grew up reading Frank Miller’s “Born Again” arc on Daredevil, and getting excited over the utter destruction of the hero’s life, and then getting bored with the hero rebuilding himself from his own ashes, because modern Marvel and DC alike are made by and for slavish lovers of nihilism as its own form of pornography, which is one of the rare forms of pornography that even I find morally offensive.

TL;DR: People who wholeheartedly enjoy the Superior Spider-Man masturbate to Dick Cheney’s ideology and the Villain Sue fanfics of short-sighted small minds who are emotionally frozen in the most self-centered yet totally non-self-aware aspects of adolescence.

Well said! applause

Though a book doesn't always need to dramatically change the status quo to be fresh and exciting IMO. I think any good writer should be able to tell interesting stories while keeping the core of the characters intact but with stories like this there's bound to be a lot of disappointed fans.

As for that blog post, I stopped reading when he said "I haven’t been buying it, but I’ve been reading it ." Why should I respect someone's opinion on the industry who doesn't want to support it?

o_O

I may not necessarily agree with everything in that blog post but I can understand why he didn't want to support a book he clearly despise. He might have borrowed a friend's issues to keep up with the series despite not liking it (that's what I did when I was in a similar situation) and disregarding someone's opinion because of that seems kinda unfair...

We should vote with our wallets after all! ;p

I love the new costume, seeing Spider-man lay waste to Shadowland is both amazing and horrific at the same thing. Great issue, although at times I felt some of the mid action poses were a bit too over the top.

Did someone seriously say that Jonah became one-dimensional? Way to not read several story arcs of set-up that happened way before this.

Poor excuse, there shouldn't be any justification for Jonah being like this.

You don't use character development to make a character worst, current jonah is terrible.

Green Goblin hacked and reprogrammed them a few issues back and made it so they would ignore all Goblins

Did someone seriously say that Jonah became one-dimensional? Way to not read several story arcs of set-up that happened way before this.

Poor excuse, there shouldn't be any justification for Jonah being like this.

14 kinda bored me a bit. it was an action issue and it bored me. i mean he's supposed to be superior. yet we didn't even see otto exhume the body. nothing in that at all. we see kingpin break the neck of some double that he had hidden away for quite some years. and thats supposed to be it. just that. the book didn't live up to the hype on this one. i'm gonna take shadowland down to the ground and he didn't even check. he wasn't thorough like he was with smythe. the only good was the suite- which i wish they would have done a little bit more with. like i don't know do something with the pants or something. hell when slott was working with peter at least his costumes did things. the only thing that i see that his new costume do is have nail extensions. glad he brought back the waldoes though i missed those. i would hope that this gobi empire that slott is making doesn't feel as rushed as this issue was. it seemed like it would have been a lot better if he had stretched well hell no the term streched is wrong in this case. he could have had a whole arc with this. hell even when peter started these adventures his first ones it didn't feel this rushed. and thats partly because these areas have their own mythos to them. they deserve a bigger plot than. hey i got an army and i'm gonna kill yours with mine. also why is he allowed to even have an army publically occupying the U.S.everyone else has to hide thier army while otto's literally has a home address. just like the kingpin. which is rediculous. it just seems a bit farfetched to me. cause it never seems that the parker luck is even affecting him. also back to that little skit with the avengers. slott must be force feeding everyone stupid pills cause ive literally seen black widow. gain more info with less data. like for real. its like he has a dampener or that spell that strange had put on peter is still affecting people. cause that's all i can think of when i see this carry on like it has. its like he's scared to go deeper into the cliff he made. i mean you make video's of bashing people or telling them how the training wheels are off and the first thing you do is stack small meaningless adventures together with a couple of gems. and literally do nothing with them. nothing at all. yeah your just gonna sit there till i decide what to do with you. i mean you make videos showing how little you care about how people view you and than you don't even treat your own stories with enough respect to get people to i don't know like the story that their currently on. geez. i know this is ramble and i've said my dislikes about this series on other posts. i just would like for them to treat this seriously. you go through the steps of killing him than you treat every issue like a terrible joke. its just too annoying to keep coming up every month to this level of bad writing. its like rushing through a steak. its just something that shouldn't be done.

@inferiorego:

I agree with you on most points, and I appear to be in the minority currently enjoying Superior, even though I've never been an Ock fan. I like that it is a risk taken, and I enjoy how morally repulsed I get at some of Ock's actions, and his arrogance makes me want to strangle him. The fact that the book elicits such emotion from me makes me enjoy it. Because I care about the character of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, and it makes me want to help him from having his reputation buried by Ock. It's a good read, although admittedly I prefer Venom as my top book, and this "Superior" arc as I've taken to calling it will only enhance the emotion of Peter's return. I personally hope they don't rush his return, I really want to see how long and far Ock can push the limits before people really start seeing something is wrong and doing something about it.

However, I was sorely disappointed in the first 5-6 issues because I found them to be terribly written and executed, I'm happy things have vastly improved.

Here's hoping for a Flash/SpOck confrontation...

@yung_ancient_one: K-box, I don't know if he posts on comicvine.

@sparty_dbq: I will just keep this post as reminder of why I don't like this series, I'll just stick to scarlet spider and other spider-books without otto.

Awesome books, I'm loving every moment of it. It's fresh, its unpredictable and finally there's a character who is more balls to the wall than most Marvel heroes ever are. I loved the crime bit with Kingpin Goblin, this whole book is a damn fine change of pace from the usual stuff.

These hate comments were funny at first but they're seriously so %&@$ing annoying now. JUST STOP BUYING IT. We get it, you don't like the change, but you don't have to shell out $9 a month to suffer. Just wait for PP to come back and hop right back on and you can get back to seeing funny quibbles and him screwing up then fixing the problem again for years and years!

Great review, great comments as well.

And cue angry replies...

who's awesome? You are!!! That's who!!!

I am having all sorts of fun with this book! :)

But I do miss Peter, but he'll be back. Well actually, I really miss Ultimate Peter Parker, but he won't be coming back. :(

@frogdog: I'd like to find that man and shake his hand.

And you may consider that the last thing I've ever going to say about this book. I've made my view about this clear more times than I care to count. I'd just be wasting my breath at this point, since Slott and Marvel made it perfectly clear at Comic-Con that I, and anyone else who feels the same way as me, can go right off and fuck ourselves. So I'm done. It's not worth it anymore. I'm 28 years old, I just bought my first home, and I work for a Fortune 500 company. I am NOT going to lose years off my life stressing over a fucking comic book. From here on out, it's pure straight denial. I'm going full-on atheist on this bitch. I'm just going to start acting like these Superior books don't even exist. Miles is the only Spider-Man in a Marvel book now, as far as I'm concerned. So you can have your megalomaniac, Bond villian Spider-Man if you want (seriously, an island fortress and his own private army? What else would you call him?), because as a wise man once said, "Ignorance is bliss."

I dig his new costume. It's like Ben Reilly's costume mixed with Miles Morales', with a hint of Iron Spider. Not bad.

Alex Ross Spider-Man

SpOck

Familiar much?!

I'm pretty sure that it was Stegman at comic con who said that the Alex Ross suit was a huge inspiration for the new Superior suit

- I am in the process of reading every issue I can get a hold of, of pre-slott spider-man. I couldn't disagree more that the title has been stagnent for that long.. I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy spider-man minus recent events like spider-island, ends of the earth...... For the last few years however there's nobody to blame but slott for it becoming same old, month after month. Marvel seriously has no respect for readers if this is the kind of storyline its publishing. I HAVE been "voting" with my wallet, I haven't been buying a LOT of titles I might otherwise. I've it to a minimum, sparing my money for after this is over.

@vegandiet

slott has no interest writing about the supporting cast. Parker's family/friends could spot that phony a mile away, especially since he "deleted" pp life (how idiotic was that?!).. Oh and other heroes, madame web, phychics...... EVEN JJJ, as one dimensional as slott's writing him as, can tell there's something up.

I could almost read it, if PP ghost guided otto to a better life.. but hes clearly setting himself up as a new kingpin. Faking everyone out, because he thinks he's above everyone.. Especially the "villains". He's pretending to be a hero because he's arrogant to think he can pull it off forever.. Which makes this whole "I'll be a 'superior' spider-man" thing a total crock of !@%*$#! Its not that he doesn't know how to be good, he doesn't care...
