Superior Spider-Man #13 - No Escape Part Three: The Slayers & The Slain

4

We've seen "Superior" Spider-Man do lots of things. It turns out there's still more he's willing to do to accomplish his goals.

The Good

Otto Octavius continues his tenure as "Spider-Man." We're seeing many levels of extremes in this latest story. Being at the Raft to ensure the execution of Alistair Smythe would happen without a hitch. He was wrong. Smythe managed to push Octavius' preparations to the limit. We practically get a full scale war between the two. There will be casualties and we will see more of how far Octavius will go in this role.

It's more than evident that this isn't the Spider-Man we used to know. It's not supposed to be. That adds a big level of the unknown. We don't know how far Octavius is willing to go and it makes a frantic and fascinating story. (And yes, deep down I still feel assured Peter will eventually return).

Camuncoli's art is superb. There's a lot of action flying around and many characters present. You'll want to make sure you pause during the fast-paced story to be able to take it all in and appreciate it.

It's a blast following along with Slott's story. He is still throwing curveballs our way. The surprises keep coming and you just have no idea what's going to happen next.

The Bad

It's easy to get into the story but you still have that lingering feeling that this shouldn't be happening. That's not a knock against the story. Perhaps it's the nature of the story, doing what it's supposed to be doing, that creates the feeling of uneasiness in the pit of your stomach. Octavius is taking "Spider-Man" further and further away. With what he sets up for himself at the end, while it is interesting, it's hard to tell what it will do the story we've been enjoying.

The events here feel a little as if they get wrapped up too quickly. It's likely better this way rather than it fill up another issue. It just felt as if the tables turned too quickly and easily.

The Verdict

Is everyone over the fact that this isn't the Spider-Man they knew before? Dan Slott continues to charge up the direction he's taking the character. We still have that deep sense of the unknown since this is essentially a different character that we're used to. Being able to overlook the past is vital to enjoying this science experiment of a story. You can't help but sit back in wonder over the extremes that Octavius is willing to take his role as Spider-Man. Action, suspense and surprises. These are great things to have in a comic. Dan Slott never ceases to amaze me.

I am keeping this series at the bottom of my pile of comics to catch up on. Sounds like it's only getting worse.

@theacidskull: I couldn't stick with it and I refuse to see Peter's legacy destroyed. At best, Ock forgets the lessons he's "learned" at the end of every issue by the start of the next one and at worse, he's just going to drag Spidey's name through the dirt while what little sanity he has circles the drain.

well...yes, but don\t get why people don't like it so much.

If it makes you feel better, I like it! Makes it seem like you're "in character", especially with a name like "The Acid Skull".

To stay on the true topic. This storyline is disgusting and extremely poorly-written. SpOck is getting away with hardly ANY reprocussions, no one that's known Peter for YEARS are wondering where this complete 180 to his personality has come from (aside from newbie Carlie (sp) and maybe MJ), even Wolverine defended his killing of villains? Wolverine, whom Spider-Man has stopped from killing before? Even if that meant Peter letting a badguy get away or having claws shoved through his spider-guts??

I have so much more beef with this series, but I'mma try to keep a lid on this rant.

you reckon? sales on this book are big and July is Superior month with a Raft of new titles, if you'll pardon the pun. It might be more of a case of the peeps at Marvel in a dilemma because the film is pressuring them to bring back Peter for next summer but it's Otto who's bringing in the bucks

I've come to realize that I don't have a problem with SSM as a concept or as a book. What I object to is the incompetence of the entire supporting cast. Folks speak frequently of how Peter will have to rebuild his life when he comes back but that only works if people never find out that he wasn't really Peter all this time -- and the suggestion that people like MJ have gone so long, and may continue to go, not recognizing that this murderous, womanizing, jerk that came out of nowhere is, in fact, a different person... that's what makes the book hard for me to take.

EVERYTHING sucks about this book, the cast, the stories, and most Importantly the main character

The superior spider-man defense force will not take kindly to those words

i can't UNDERSTAND why any spider-man fan would like this

Do you actually want to hear why or are you just venting?

obviously i want to hear it.

don't say "obviously" like the internet, let alone the comic book nerd community isn't full of god damn whiny people who like to complain for no other reason other then to complain, so I like to actually make sure first.

Anyways for me, someone who refused to even acknowledge 700 and found the death quite disrespectful to the character have been reading this, and I do not absolutely hate it. If this was something permanent then I would absolutely be furious with the change, but this is just another saga of something bad that happened to spider-man. The story shifted to someone who doesn't have peter's morals but they all think is spider-man still, so when people say go read scarlet spider or venom for someone like that it's not the same, those two characters don't have spider-mans rouge gallery or loved ones still interacting with him.

I like seeing doc ock balance his personal time with his super hero-ing time, and it's nice to see him show up on time and be there for aunt may more, had his insane ego not ruined everything most of the time it would have been quite sweet to see. If peter applied himself and had the resources he could have done the exact same thing, it's not like he didn't know how to do the stuff ock was doing, it just never crossed his mind.

Most of all I like seeing how spider-man's rouge gallery shits their pants when they realize he is not joking around anymore. Like I said since it's not permanent I am amused by it. Something I hope happens is a run in with Green Goblin, I would love to see Norman's reaction to the personality change. If he starts slaughtering Rhino, Sandman, Shocker or important people then I would get a little up tight about it but he killed some boring gunman and Smythe who has been useless for how long.

Most of all I love hating doc ock. He succeeded in his plan and I can't wait to see how peter returns, i just hope his return is better than his death.

@kid_apollo: GAH!!! That's HORRIBLE news.

Superior Spider-Man is SO much more interesting to read, and the lack of a "witty" quib every 1-2 sentences is a breath of fresh air.

I know Peter will be back at some point (next year, around the March-May time frame), but as long as the writing is this great (as well as Yost's writing for SSM in Avenging Spider-Man) then I'm going to enjoy this ride to the fullest.

I hope, at least, that when the Peter does come back, that they let Yost or Hickman write the comic.

The universe has split open from Age of Ultron remember? That could be any Spider-Man from any universe or timeline. It could even be Ben Riley accepting himself as the perfect clone and taking up the classic costume. Anything's possible, I wouldn't jump to conclusions too soon.

Well, sorry. I personally don't feel Peter Parker needs to be Spider-Man but there's no way I'm going to support a franchise that has taken a world class villain and rewarded him with making him Spider-Man after he killed the previous one. Sorry, that doesn't fly with me and it never will. At least people have stopped with the excuse they are only reading it till Peter Parker comes back, cause he won't till sales crash to a point where they need a new event.

So at my local comic shop this past Wednesday, I was just picking up my usual stack of comics, when out of the blue Christos Gage showed up, signed a few copies, bought a few comics and hung out for a while. That was definitely an awesome day lol.

Love this issue and this series so much. I especially like how Superior finally turns on Jameson. It was bound to happen some time. I'm really interested to see the fate of Curt Connors going forward. The people who still want Peter back can go sit on it and rotate. I want this series to last as long as possible.

This is just disgusting. Dragging my childhood hero through the mud like this and everyone praising it. Why are people enjoying this? If you want to read about a bad ass loose cannon Spider-Man, read Scarlet Spider. Or Venom! He's close enough.

As a Spider-Man fan since 1989, I hope Spider-Ock gets what's coming to him. Like...maybe someone getting a hold of a mini-slayer and hearing that little confession he made...

And the ending Spider-man getting his own base and naming it Spider-Island II makes me feel like they're trying to make him into a fusion of Spider-man and Batman with some old tendency of old Otto in the case of hiring spider themed henchmen. I can't wait to see how spider-man sorts through his new life in the eventual switch back

hey Marvel i enjoyed the ride so far but it boggles the mind why they would push a more ruthless version of spiderman onto us when we already have THE SCARLET SPIDER!!!!above the title says it all...
All of the power , None of the responsibility!!!! why sabotage another book taking eyes off a fairly new product only to move the same concept over to one of the more popular books around?? mind boggling...

I wonder if Scarlet Spider sales dipped or took a rise after a few months of SSM on shelves

I've said on these forums before and I'll repeat it I think Superior Spider-Man exists for two reasons. The first is to tell what will ultimately be an epic final showdown between Peter and Ock, or more likely a final redemption tale of Doc Ock that sees him die heroically and inspire a returned Peter Parker. Secondly I think this story exists to give Peter Parker a "soft reset". Brand New Day was jarring and in my opinion really terrible. This is a nice way to reintroduce the character to a world that feels appropriately Spider-Man. Essentially he will have to re-build everything Ock has destroyed. The city will fear and hate him, he's on thin ice with the Avengers, he's made his enemies even more adamant about killing him, his job at Horizon is at the breaking point, he's severed his relationships. Peter Parker has problems. It has been his long standing trait, I feel like this story is going to bring that back in a big bad way.

I agree with this, I think it will eventually accomplish what Brand New Day did badly.

That said, while I have been enjoying this, the fun is kind of wearing off for me. This Spider-Slayer arc seemed kind of random and thrown in awkwardly after the interesting build-up with the new Green Goblin. I hope we see more of Otto's new girlfriend, she's kind of the series saving grace.

I've always loved Spider-man from the comics to the TV show and even the Movies (minus 3 *shudders*). Theres nothing "Bad" about the writing. Just because you don't like the way the story is turning out, doesn't mean its a bad book. I may not have liked some movies and how they turned out, but they weren't bad movies. If you don't like it, don't buy it and don't let it bother you.

I don't do the same either. I comment SOMETIMES, and a Movie is different, while this is the mainstream continuity , and i find it hard to like a series that shows of a murderer as a better hero than the actually hero himself.

I apologize...you may not but a lot of the users do...I think that's subjective....I don't think he's a better hero than Peter at all...I think that right now it may appear that he's getting better results than Peter but I also believe that it's all going to blow up in his face....I think what really draws me to the series is that I know that Peter is going to come back eventually and only really see this as an extended arc...plus i like to see how Ock interacts with Peter's friends....I'm also excited to see the Superior/Scarlet crossover and the Superior/2099 crossover

My only beef with the series is that, Otto is not doing anything to keep a low profile. he is getting carried away with being a hero that he will just end up going back to being a villain. I really wish I could see more moments of him learning a lesson like he did with cardiac that sometimes you need to have heart in a job like this.
