Supergirl #4 - Escape

4

Supergirl tries to escape from her captors, and if there's one thing this issue teaches us, it's that you don't mess with Supergirl.

Supergirl remains captive high above Earth in a space station. With a little bit of help, she can escape, but can she make it out alive, and more importantly, can she trust the man who claims to be her cousin, Kal-El?

The Good

I've always liked the character, Supergirl, but I feel like I'm missing out on so much when I read the book, in the past, because there's so much I feel liked I missed out on, over the years, for not reading on a regular basis. Now, with SUPERGIRL (as with ACTION COMICS and SUPERBOY) I feel as though not only do I understand the character more, but I actually like the character more now because of this book and this issue.

Supergirl still doesn't know where she is and who she should trust, and that includes Superman. She's been dealt with a lot of craziness in these past few issues, and she's quickly learning not to trust humans, and I think that's going to play out a lot more in this series. It was really cool to watch her cut loose.

I always liked Michael Green's writing, especially his run on SUPERMAN/BATMAN entitled "K." I've been loving his run, thus far, on Supergirl, not only as a reboot to the character, but as a great story. Green tells interesting stories and always adds a little flavor to an old classic, and I feel like we're starting to get a little bit of that in this book.

The Bad

I could care less about this villain. Green may be adding a little flavor (cloned body?) to an old classic (Lex Luthor-type character), but this villain, Mr Tycho, comes off as such a wiener. I don't like the character, and I can't think of a better word to describe him, so I'll say it again: wiener.

The Verdict

I love this series. In fact, I love all the Super-Family books, except for SUPERMAN, obviously. This book stands out on his own, and for those looking for a strong female character that isn't all about T&A and flaunting sexuality, you should check out this book. I love the lack of trust Supergirl has in everything around her and she isn't just friendly with everyone, which I felt like she was in the last volume. I hope this lack of trust continues to play out in this series. I loved Michael Green's writing and his writing style. He brings new ideas to classic elements in comics, and this is a great example of that. On the other side of things, I really did not like the new villain introduced into this series. I feel that type of villain is a bit tired. Obviously, I highly recommend this issue and this series. You won't regret it.
