Supergirl #26 - Survivors

2

Supergirl returns to Earth after a harrowing experience in Krypton Returns, but what does she have to return to?

The Good

We get more of the new Lobo, establishing him as a particularly bad hombre who is, under no circumstances, to be crossed. He’s called to Earth to find a lead on the issue with the big, burly badass who’s taken his name and sullied his rep, but what he finds is Dr. Veritas being guarded by Supergirl who, to be fair, just wants to talk. Before that, we get some insight into how Kara is dealing with the fallout from Krypton Returns, but more on that later.

The art in this issue by Yildiray Cinar is absolutely fantastic. The characters are gorgeously rendered and brought to detailed, beautiful life, and the splash pages are amazing. The use of light, in particular, is amazingly well-realized and brought to the fore. Ray McCarthy’s inks also bring these images to stark life, rendering and emphasizing all the right things and places. What they also do a great job of is showing the pure, unbridled strength of Kara Zor-El in her brief battle with Lobo in an especially great splash page, along with a two-page splash that recaps the past several issues.

The Bad

This issue feels like two steps back in terms of its characterization of Supergirl. I’ve enjoyed Tony Bedard’s writing elsewhere, so it was a little surprising to see, after a solid run with Michael Alan Nelson that poked fun at some of the absurdity of Supergirl’s previous storylines and had some incredible advances in the character, we’re back to her openly weeping about her oh-so-sad lot in life for multiple pages. I’m not made of stone, I like my characters to have appropriate moods and reactions to the events around them and, of course, after Krypton Returns, Kara’s not in a good place, so it’s only natural she should be somewhat emotionally compromised.

But having her try to return to Siobhan, only to be rebuked by the very NOTION that she’d gotten a new roommate made me want to shout “WHY!?!??!” at the top of my lungs. She doesn’t even go in and say hi, or ask what happened, she just sees her former roommate, WHO KARA INTERACTED WITH AS SHE SPED OFF-PLANET ON A SPACE MOTORCYCLE, with another friend and flies away sobbing. She even acknowledges that Siobhan may have needed to make rent, but that “doesn’t matter.” HOW?! How does that not matter?! Supergirl left without a word and is now horrified and hurt that...her friend has another friend?!?! It actually comes off a little creepy. We also get Lobo picking a fight when he really doesn’t need to. I get it, it’s comics, people fight, but Supergirl had made basically no moves to oppose him, and we’re to believe this is a more collected, professional Lobo, yet he straight up lashes out and attacks an opponent he knows nothing about and that turns out to be a ruinously poor decision on his part. His dialog is also incongruous with his new look, a change I don't mind, but he still sounds like he's being written like a burly 80s biker, but certainly doesn't look that part any longer.

The Verdict

Supergirl’s a weird, tricky character. She can’t just be Superman With a Y Chromosome because it defeats the purpose, but making her fret and hem and haw every decision certainly isn’t the right answer, it just turns her into “Overly Emotional Superman.” I feel like I may have been too hard on this particular issue because it followed a truly great run, but it’s hard not to be after the character made SUCH progress and development, particularly in the issues leading up to and including Cyborg Superman. I truly hope the next few issues develop her character more.

Well hey is the first "real" lobo full app/1st cover. I guess that alone should be an automatic buy.

I was hoping that the new writer would bring something positive to the table, shame that it didn't quite reach my expectations. Otherwise, good review - I was a bit disappointed that Kara had taken such a back step in terms I her characterisation. Also: shouldn't that be Superman with another X chromosome? :P

@saint_rog_el: If nothing else the art in this issue was top notch, i did a double take on almost every page because i thought my eyes were deceiving me.

I have to agree with the taking two steps back comment and the whole Siobhan's new room mate thing, what was that about??

I didn't mind Lobo, don't know what to expect from that character yet. Would've given it a three just for the art but i have to admit that after recent issues this one did take a real dive in terms of Kara's development.

Bit harsh I felt Corey. But then again not a lot really happened just a bunch of flash backs the art was good and I'm looking forward to the cross over in Feb. But after that no more cross overs for a year every time this book hits a really good sweet spot they kill all the momentum.

Sounds about what I expected when I heard they were pushing Kara into the Red Lanterns. I have to disagree about Nelson progressing Kara all that much as well. He dragged out the kryptonite poisoning story, blew up the home she had just made for herself, and had Kara telling off and leaving the only friend she had made on Earth. For some reason the writers on this series keep going in circles and backtracking on any growth Kara had from previous issues.

I don't doubt that score. Still picking up SuperBrat though and the fact that we finally see more doctor veritas...... FINALLY!

Also, Lobo is being a D! Ck on that cover.... treating a poor 14 year old girl like that...

She can’t just be Superman With a Y Chromosome

That would just make her Superman. You mean another X chromosome.

Science!

So was Lobo weak in any way? Like any more writing that made him sound like a pretentious High School kid?

Well I'll have to judge it when I get it. My LCS sold out. I read the previews which focused on Lobo and he still seem pretty bad ass.

I'm shocked anything gets less than a 4 star review on this site. About time they started actually reviewing comics.

It would be nice if Comicvine staffers were a little harsher in their reviews. It makes it really hard to sift through the noise on what is actually good if they believe EVERYTHING is good. Hopefully this is the start of things to come.

@darbycat1: i wouldnt hold my breath on it comicvine and other sites that review comics tend to be i little more forgiving when it comes to reviews because for the most part they review it has comic fans and not as reviewers but its still better than most youtube reviewers who dont hide their fandom of writers or artiest and will give these people great reviews when the book is bad

Isn't supergirl 16 years old, do not all teenagers acted emo at one point in life. Its a phase that she must grow through.

This review isn't really accurate to the comic that I just read. It's nowhere near as bad imo; It's actually alright. The Siobhan part actually makes sense and the fight with Lobo isn't out of nowhere. It happens for a reason and actually has some dialogue before hand.

I'd give it a 3-4 personally.

@undeadpool: Corey, I think you may have overreacted a bit and not understand the emotional part of the issue. Yeah Supergirl did feel a bit strong fighting H'el last issue, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have the right to feel back down emotionally. If you noticed Supergirl has been through a roller coaster especially with the death of both H'el and now Superboy. She's been through a lot even seeing a fake kyprton or her mother and father during the Cyborg Superman storyline. Plus, she maybe just realized that it was wrong for her to leave Siobhan the way she did. So, that's definitely enough for her to go through this. I would have given this book a 3 or 3.5. It was an okay issue. The only thing that bother me is this so-called "Real Lobo". He's too much of the cool-suave pretty boy which does not fit the Lobo we are use to. He's seem to much like a bad imitation of Gambit. And I'm really starting to dislike the "Sorry, not sorry". It's corny and does not work at all.

I disagree with this review. This is a solid 4. The art is amazingly good, not just good. Lobo is awesome. His interaction with Supergirl is really good, and believe me the fight is just beginning despite the "cliffhanger" on the last page. I would have disagreed with a 3, but at least that would have shown more respect for the quality of the issue. For crying out loud, the art alone makes it start with a 3. The writing/story was really good but not perfect, so a 4 is a good score in my opinion. It's the best Supergirl issue in a while if you ask me.

issues 19 and 20 are still my favorite two issues in The New 52 we need more comics with a sense of humor. Not everything has to be dark and serious all the time.

While I agree with the reviewers opinion about the writers issues with the progression of Supergirls character, I also feel he was a bit harsh in his grading. The art is stellar, and the writing isn't so bad that it warrants reducing below at least 3 stars on the strength of the art alone. If they gave half points I'd bump it another half star on the introduction of this new "real" Lobo, who is apparently looking for the Lobo we all know and love, who is allegedly an imposter. Well, if he is, I am looking forward to seeing him pound the hell out of this new pretty boy. Grade - 3.5 stars
