Superboy #12 - Night Games!

3

Now that Superboy is spending time away from N.O.W.H.E.R.E. and the Teen Titans, we get to see him interact with normal people. Of course that isn't going to last very long.

The Good

Who is Superboy in the New 52? What we're seeing from Tom DeFalco is an attempt to make Superboy an actual person. The days of being tied to N.O.W.H.E.R.E. are in the past. Despite his ties to the Teen Titans, Superboy is trying to make a life for himself separate from all that. Not only has he found possibly lady interest, she has a group of friends that appears to be building up a supporting cast and allows for us to see Superboy out of the costume. There is still some connection as Bunker puts in a cameo as well to continue building the friendship they've developed.

Even with ties to TEEN TITANS, SUPERMAN and SUPERGIRL, this issue has a very definite separate feel to it. You can easily get into this issue and not have to worry about being up to date with the other related titles. I understand that the earlier issues needed to deal with where Superboy came from and how his personality was being developed. It just felt like we kept going in circles.

Superboy is still new to the world. He's still trying to figure out what the 'real world' is about and how it works. Seeing him deal with new situations is fun and a nice change of pace. What would Superboy's first experience with alcohol be like? Does he know how to dance? Sure these aren't crucial questions that need to be answered but seeing them touched upon humanizes his character a little bit more.

The art is handled by Robson Rocha and Eduardo Pansica. They may not be the regular pencilers for the series but I like the look they add. Something always bothered me about the art in this series and I would prefer to see a style closer to this. But I'm sure there are plenty that prefer the other style as well.

The Bad

This issue was a nice interlude in continue to establish a more private life for Superboy. We just get glimpses of his new possible non-powered supporting cast. From a first glance, it's a little difficult to form an opinion on them. It is great to see an effort made in creating more characters but their superficial nature could make it hard to like or care about them. First appearances may not be a final determination in who they are so we can hope we'll see more development. Issue #13 mentions Superboy will still continue to try to have a normal life.

"Only a fool would dare challenge Kiva--Mistress of the Lost Domain!" That line was pretty cheesy. Until we find out more about this Kiva, it's difficult to take her as a 'villain' seriously.

Superboy also needs to get his civilian name ASAP. "Cutie" just isn't going to cut it.

The Verdict

This series has had its ups and downs. DeFalco is attempting to humanize Superboy a little more and it's a welcome change. We've been through his origin and have seen his early adjustments to the 'real world.' Trying to connect with 'normal' people is a good idea but hopefully we'll continue to see the struggle as he tries to figure out the proper way to handle things and etiquette required in different situations. The art here was an improvement but unfortunately seems to be just a fill in. During Superboy's efforts to create and maintain a normal life, he is pulled into a supernatural-type confrontation. The 'villain' leaves a little to be desired but hopefully we'll see some payout when the reason for her appearance here is explained. It's going to be good to see where this series will go moving forward but we'll have to wait until after next month's zero issue.

I'm losing interest in Superboy and I'm not sure why. It's almost like I'm waiting for something that they are taking forever to deliver or may not at all.. :/

I have never been a Superman fan. However, I love the elements that make Superboy who he is. Not that I can relate to this but just thinks it makes him more dimensional.

The new 52 version is losing something. It has been all over the place. I'm just not feeling the same for this Superboy as I did Conner.

I'm on the verge of dropping Superboy. I get enough of him in Teen Titans, a series that's done far more with it's full cast than Superboy has done with just the one character in the same number of issues.

Honestly, on his own, he's just not... doing anything. I'm not even sure I like him as a person.

Contrasted with Supergirl which I've thoroughly enjoyed I'm finding it hard to justify.

I like the series, I want to love the series like how I love Batman or Justice League & Uncanny X-Force. I feel like this book has some great potential and the writers haven't tapped into it yet. Hopefully in the 0 issue it would be great. I feel the same way about the Superman series, I like the series, yes I like Superman. The stories are alright. Alright enough for me to like it but it has so much potential. Seriously DC Comics, if your reading this you have the power to make the books great. Make it happen!

^^^^THIS^^^^

I like every issue of Superman family Heroes, yes some of them were ok but they have much potential and I believe that this books are still in character development phase so some people won't like the initial story plots.

But as a true Superman fan I will continue to buy all the Superman family titles every week.

@btmt: I think your right about the character development phase. I got done reading the Superboy trade of the New 52 and notice Superboy was changing as a character. I think after the 0 issues the Superman books will get better. I don't care how many stars they recieve, I'll still buy them. I like the characters thats why I buy the books & thats all that matters to me. Though good stories would be great too.

Seriously, Superboy is one of the worst series I read from DC. I really, really, really want to like it, as I've been a fan of the character for quite a long time. But Scott Lobdell and Tom DeFalco's version is just plain boring, annoyingly naive about the world, and frustratingly powerful (and adept at using said powers.)

I really just feel like the inner monologue nature of this book is like smacking readers across the face with exposition instead of just letting things happen and using the art to tell a story. It's beyond aggravating.

This book along with the Ravengers, teen titans, the Liefeld books, superman, green arrow, and im sure several more just feel like they dont even want to be great, they just want to me middle of the road better written versions of 90's storys. Not that I hate all these books, teen titans for instance is tolerable, but they still just feel like they are being written for 12 year olds who like snappy dialogue, fights, and plots that are painfully cliche.

This has been my on my "almost ready to end my sub to" list for a long time, but I like the direction that Tom appears to be taking Superboy with this issue. I like his friendship with Bunker and that he'll be doing a lot of things for the first time now that he's on his own. I hope to see more of this stuff in this title and the battling piece in Titans.

I really really love the new 52 superboy. I just haven't enjoyed how much the comic is tied in with Teen Titians and I feel the stand alone would progressed his story enough. I just hope that Tom DeFalco can have Superboy stand on his own. I also really hope the Super-family cross will be a good way to do this.

Superboy. I love the character, I want to love him, but DC has not done it with me. The New 52 has done a great job redefining and reimaging many of its characters. Look at my favorite—AQUAMAN. They have done an amazing job changing people views on the character and defining his powers. So why haven’t they done that with Superboy. I feel that Superboy is used as a gateway for Teen Titians or a guess Ravagers as well now. I have been collecting his comics for a year now, I have been close to canceling several times, but every time I see (or maybe want to see) a little hope that they may define his character and have him stand on his own. I want them to spend more time truly defining his character. I want to love the comic as much as I love the character. I want to look forward to reading the comics.
