The Good
Boba Fett is awesome. This is common knowledge. Boba Fett being dead is not so awesome, so when I found out there was a book about uncovering who killed Boba Fett, I knew this was a book for me. This is my VERY first venture into any Star Wars comic, believe it or not, and I was extremely pleased with the star of this mini-series.
The book follows the events of Boba Fett's assassination and the man killing off the people who put out the hit. We also get to meet Connor Freeman, a cantina owner, who seems suspiciously tied into all of these events. I like that even though the deck seems stacked against him, you can't be too sure that Connor Freeman is the man behind the carnage in this issue.
I may be jumping the gun a bit, and reading way too much into the signs (I'm pretty sure I'm not though), but I'm pretty sure that Connor Freeman is one of Boba Fett's sons. Yes, sons. He has to have a couple out there, right? I've been out of the Star Wars loop for quite some time, so maybe I'm missing something, but I love this idea.
The art is incredibly cool in this issue. Chris Scalf does some beautiful work here, and it's not the traditional style you'd see in most comic books now-a-days. It has more of a painting style to it, and the opening page of Boba Fett laying on the dried up ground is incredibly cool. The whole issue is filled with this fantastic art. There may have been a few misses with it, but overall, it's great.
I never thought I'd be excited for a comic featuring Dewbacks.
The Bad
The ending is a bit tough to swallow because of where it leaves the main character. The idea of his whole life being turned upside-down is cool, but without him, the story pretty much dies. We'll see with the next issue though.
There were a few times were the art was not so good. A few close ups on characters faces revealed some distortions. It's a tad distracting, but at least that was the only real problematic thing with this issue.
The Verdict
Wow, this was a really cool book and a great concept! While Boba Fett's death hurts any Star Wars fan, the revenge aspect that we see in this issue makes up for it. I really like where this book is going, story wise, and I loved Chris Scalf's artwork here. It's refreshing. Plus, there's some cool Dewback scenes!
On the downside of things, the ending of the issue, if it plays out how it seems (which it never does), then the book kind of comes to a halt, and there were a few times where the faces were distorted in the art.
Overall, this was a great start to the series. I really liked this one, and it was easy to jump into, even though I've never read a Star Wars comic before. I highly recommend this issue!
