Spongebob Freestyle Funnies #2014 Review

4

There's plenty of undersea fun and adventure in this issue.

The Good

I have to admit, I've never really watched SpongeBob SquarePants. I've seen bits of it when visiting my brother and nephew. I get the concept and know he's an acquired taste. Despite my not being the biggest SpongeBob fan, this was an enjoyable book. The first story, by Graham Annable, deals with SpongeBob and his friend, Patrick, bothering their neighbor, Squidward. It seems like the type of story you could expect from the show. Jacob Chabot's art captures the character perfectly, or as perfectly as I can recall. Mike Lapinski's colors are nice and vibrant, again, adding to the feel of the characters from the show.

After a short story and ocean facts, we get another story written and drawn by Gregg Schigiel. This story features the characters (that I haven't actually seen), Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. I briefly talkled to Gregg at Emerald City Comicon and he was excited about this because he created a new character for the story (not in the animated series). If you're familiar with this crime-fighting duo, you'll love the first appearance by Mermaid Girl.

The final story is about SpongeBob and Patrick wanting to make comics.

The Bad

The short story and ocean facts weren't to my liking. The final story was just okay. For fans of the character, they might be more tolerant of these. Then again, with the noticeable change in art style, they might be harder on accepting stories outside the animated series.

The Verdict

Even though I'm not a fan of the SpongeBob animated series and have only seen bits of actual episodes, I still found this to be a fun comic. I would imagine fans of the show would enjoy this Free Comic and the fact that most of the comic captures the feel of the show. It's also worth noting that this marks the first appearance of a new character, outside the show, with Mermaid Girl. If you enjoy the show or are familiar with the characters, you should dig this comic. If you're not a fan or don't like the, sometimes annoying, voices, this could be a good way to check out what the characters are about. It's a comic that can appeal to everyone.

Sigh.... seeing this only makes me miss working at my daycare even more.

On a lighter note, I wonder what Aquaman would think of this :)
