Spider-Men #5

5

Miles Morales and Peter Parker take on Mysterio in the finale of the amazing Marvel crossover event.

The Good

This is the best Marvel crossover event to date. I once read someone at Marvel say, years back, that when the 616 Universe and Ultimate Universe crossover, Marvel has run out of ideas. I hope Marvel runs out of ideas more often then because this series is nothing short of brilliant. This isn't just one of my favorite Marvel stories this year. This is my favorite story from ANY company this year. Now, onto the actual issue.

Let's jump right to the end. This has one of the best cliffhangers in years, and it's insanely simple. It's not some huge reveal page with a character you love saying something moderately threatening. It's a question we all have in the back of our minds, and it's executed so incredibly well.

Since issue one, I felt Brian Michael Bendis has done a stellar job with the dialogue, minus one scene in this issue which I'll mention later. I love one of the final scenes here as Peter gives advice to Miles. Miles really looks up to Peter and to have your role model give him advice about the choices he is making in his life must be a great feeling, and it makes for one fantastic, emotional scene.

Lots of great action in this issue as Peter and Miles fight Mysterio. While this is an emotional book and series, there is still some fun little action sequences as we get to see the older Spider-Man and the new Spider-Man do things their own way.

Sara Pichelli's art is just as strong as Bendis' writing here. One thing I'd like to point out that I really enjoyed was Mysterio's stance as he swings a lead pipe. He's not a super-strong villain, and he's not the best hand-to-hand fighter. You can see all of this in the two panels as he swings a pipe. There's little power behind his swing, and it's little things like that which add depth to the character and story.

The Bad

The opening, with Mysterio talking to himself, is a bit rough. It's a lot of explanatory dialogue as Mysterio recalls everything that has happened in this mini-series as he talks to himself. I do not like characters babbling on to themselves in monologues, especially when they're explaining the whole plot of the book. I understand that any issue can be a person's first issue of a book, but this is the last issue of the mini-series. This isn't needed, and it doesn't really add anything to the book, other than Mysterio has no one to talk to but himself.

The Verdict - Pick of the Week!

This mini-series a strong contender for pick of the year, and it will probably win it for me, unless something amazing comes out between now and December. This is the best Marvel crossover to date, and on top of being an excellent read, it has an amazing cliffhanger ending. Bendis has done a phenomenal job with the writing here and as always, Sara Pichelli's art is awesome. I just hope we get to see some of the repercussions of this mini-series in the main books. One can dream.

On the downside, I really didn't like the opening with Mysterio talking to himself.

Overall, I highly recommend this issue and series. It is downright amazing.

Between the cliffhanger and the fact that Mysterio gets left in the Ultimate universe, I can't help but wonder if the success of this book is setting the potential stage for a larger 616-Ultimate crossover event. This could have been a test run, of sorts, and what better character to use than Spiderman given the circumstances?

I agree with everything you said....this mini has been absolutely brilliant in all ways....the cliffhanger in this issue was so well done and made this already amazing series even better

I am glad. This series has been great throughout, Bendis and Pinchelli stuck the landning (though a page or two more couldn't have hurt?).

Also, Peter Parker used Google in the end. Not Bing. THANK YOU!

The ending is driving me up a wall. A good series though, liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

@MadeinBangladesh: I hope The Rot will offer something great in terms of crossover-goodness. Although, I still think you might be right in the end.

This is literally the best crossover/event/mini-series I've ever read. (Of course I've only been reading comics for about 2 years).

I love the Animal Man/Swamp Thing cross over, but this mini-series was a damned work of art.

The Prowler? (But then Peter wouldn't react like that, nvm)

Technically the "Rot" storyline has only just begun so we'll have to wait and see on that one. However I am not arguing against Spider-Men being anything other than great. ;)

This deserves an Eisner Award. Spider-men is, hands down, the best Spider-Man story ever. It's a great way to celebrate Peter's 50th year and Miles's first year. I'm happy that I picked this up and made mine a Marvel.

I really hope that he's not some criminal or a dead person. It would be cool if he were some great doctor or university professor or detective or peace corps volunteer or community organizer or something. Miles is a really good role model--just like Pete is--and I want to see things stay that way--in both universes.

We aready have a Luke Cage.

The best crossover Marvel has don in years, seriously, I pulled out every Marvel book out of my monthly pull list many years ago until this series came out, and at first I was like "now they're officially out of ideas". And now, after reading the last issue I WANT MORE OF THIS!

The story by Bendis is great and the art by Sara Pichelli is beautiful. Better follow the cliffhanger somewhere in the future in a good way, my body is ready.

Everyone seems to think this was a great series....I guess it was but it seemed kind of rushed to me and it seemed strange that Mysterio never mentioned anything about Spider man being Peter Parker even though the heroes talked about it....IN FRONT OF HIM!!!

Everyone seems to think this was a classic series but I just think it was ok, but I would recommend it to readers. Also the fact that there was no interaction with Mary Jane and Peter was a big dissappointment. But it was an okay series, just not as great as folks are making it out to be. But I would recommend it to people.

I agree with this being a fantastic mini-series. I don't want Ultimate/616 crossovers to become the norm, but there is definitely more story here and I hope that it gets worked out.

Actually, in this issue, Mysterio did talk about that while he was in 616. Fury talked about it too. That's why Mysterio--just go (re-)read the issue, man.

this was terrific honestly stunning. i remember when someone at marvel said the out of ideas quip. my only question is; no more mysterio? because he just can't come back. also, if he knew peter died in the ultimate universe a little while back now, then why didn't he try to act in the 616 universe, or at least try to play to his advantage?

It was a good mini series. This issue was probably the low point of all the books for me though. Hold off on the best Spider story ever stuff, that's going a bit off the deep end.

Mysterio is the same person in both universes. He found out who Pete was toward the end of Peter's tenure on Ultimate Spider-Man. I think during the renumbering in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man via video.

God dammit ! What is with that Cliffhanger ?! Now I NEED to know what Peter saw....For some reason I think this new ''Nick Fury'' of 616 may turn out to be Miles. Now that would be a twist. Other than that I hope he won't be a villian in 616.

Other than that, this was a great Crossover that wanted me to have more. Now if only marvel would drop the whole ''change the universe forever ! '' events each year and focus on more stories like this.

I have my own theory that could possibly be for a "Spider-Men 2" (if BMB even has plans for one is beyond me), it goes as follows: Peter Parker upon googling Miles Morales finds an obit for Miles, it is revealed that Miles was killed in a skirmish Spider-Man has had in the past, so Peter Parker/Spider-Man finds a way to travel back into time and meets up with past 616-Spidey and they try and correct the events that led to Miles' death.

It was pretty stupid, that Mysterio - a proffesional and genial super villain - couldn't fu*king handle himself and went back to ultimate universe, to see what's going on in there. I really hate when villains act like idiots...

This was a great miniseries, but it leaves a huge cliffhanger at the end about the possibility of a 616 version of Miles Morales. I wonder if this will come back in the 700 issue?

I enjoyed the miniseries, but I was a bit bored of this issue. Not as fun as the others had been. Also, I found it odd that Peter just decided to ditch Mysterio in that universe...where he doesn't belong.
