Spider-Men #4

5

Peter and Miles head to Aunt May's house to talk to May and Gwen Stacy.

The Good

This is the most powerful Spider-Man book I have ever read. The Ultimate Peter Parker is dead and gone, and 616 Peter Parker makes his way to the May household to meet Aunt May and Gwen Stacy with Miles Morales. What happens from there is a lot of talking about the past and how these two worlds differ. It's incredibly emotional, and while I've loved the rest of these mini-series, thus far, this issue blows the others away, and there's no action, no fighting, no bad guys, only heart-wrenching dialogue.

Bendis does an amazing job here at portraying a very private moment between these four characters. It's not overly-sappy, and it's not forced. It's just damn good. It's not a constant tear-jerking all the way through. There are moments of fun and intrigue throughout the issue, and the moments leading up to the incredibly sad moments are paced very well.

Unless the last issue of this book is awful (I'm pretty sure it will be awesome though), this is going down as my favorite cross-over book of all time. It works so well on so many levels, and this issue is the nail in the coffin for me because it really addresses how the lives of the people closest to Peter are affected by his return, and it's not just a couple panels of this, it's essentially a whole issue.

Once again, Sara Pichelli is awesome. There's a lot of detail here when it comes to facial expressions, and while I normally complain about "disappearing backgrounds," it works insanely well here for a few high-emotion moments where nothing else in the world matters other than the single action happening in the panel, whether it be a hug or a moment of realization. All around amazing job done by Sara.

The Bad

I wish I read this last today, and not second.

The Verdict - My Pick of the Week!

If you're only going to pick up one book this week, even if you haven't read Spider-Men at all, this should still be the issue you should get. It's an incredibly powerful issue. This is an amazing story from start to finish in the middle of a dynamite story line. Bendis' writing is fantastic here, as well as the pacing from beat to emotional beat. Sara Pichelli's art, as always, is top notch and she proves you don't just have to have to guys punching each other in the face to tell a great story artistically.

Overall, I give this the highest recommendation possible. You WILL love this issue.

I completely agree with everything said here even the "bad" except I read it first and I really regret it since I know that no other book could possibly hold a candle to this issue....it would be hard to do but I really wish that there was a way for this to be turned into an ongoing...I would read the hell out of that

I don't understand what's going on in the comic. It feels like an attempt to legitimize Miles(Which he doesn't need) and give Aunt May and Gwen Stacy closure, which again I don't want to see is such a campy way.

@danhimself: Peter Parker getting thrown into a portal create by Mysterio, don't get me started on that explanation, into the Ultimate's universe. It feels like some sci-fi story they'd do for comics in the 80's or 90's.

@TheCrowbar: the "how" of how he got to the Ultimate U doesn't matter at all it's the stuff that happens once he's thereit makes sense...as for giving closure to Aunt May and Gwen...it was definitely needed and having a chance for them to talk to a grown up Peter is the perfect way to do it...a lot of characters in the Ultimate Universe needed this as Peter's death affected a lot of the characters there and is still affecting them..Captain America quit because of it

@SandMan_:

@danhimself: No, dealing with the fallout of Ultimate Peter's death more would've been better, it's too soon to wash it away like that, there ought to be a larger effect, especially in Miles' life.

I loved this!!! I am going to admit, I cried a few times....

The part where Miles, Gwen and Aunt May are talking with Peter was awsome, and heartwarming, I loved it... The highlight was the interaction between Peter and May, when she realises that is really Peter. When he was leaving the house, oh god!! When Peter was saying goodbye to May and Gwen, that put smile on my face, like the one Peter has on the variant cover :). And emo Mary Jane? Cool... :) I hated that she just ran off, I expected her to appear more... :/ And to conclude the entire post, I loved the sence of family that I had... I felt like May, Gwen, Peter and eaven Miles where a family... It might be weird, but it all fit together....

I am recomending this to everyone! This is a must! But read it last, it effectivly ruined every single other issue that I picked up this week.... Yes... It's that good!!

PS. Miles: Do they have Nick Fury where you come from?

Peter: Oh, yes.

Fury: Yeah? What's he like?

Peter: White.

Fury: Sorry to hear that.

Hah gold... xDD

While the 'cross-dimension' trope is a common and often campy one for the funny books, I've enjoyed how it's been handled here in 'Spider-Men'. Great moments and one-liners for all the characters; I loved the call-back to Kitty/Peter too because I'm completely biased in favor of both characters hooking up.

Also, Sara Pichelli's been bringing it, with every issue. I'm not sure what the deadlines were for her on this book, but it looks like she's had time to really go all out and her pencils are stronger all the more for it.

I can't declare just how much I love this damn book. It sounded like such story that should have never been told it's just insanely great. I still say Miles gets his web-shooter from Peter. Everyone needs to get these issues. It's just that good. Such a great treat when a surprise like this ends up exceding what everyone thought it was going to be. I don't know what I like more right now, this or Uncanny X-Force. This I guess. Even tho it's six issues it's waaaaaay to short. They should have made it 12 issues.

@TheCrowbar: I agree with what you're saying, but I disagree with it, because it works. Aunt May and Gwens closure in this form is campy, but it's works. Miles needing to be legitmized this way is also campy, but it works. It works so well. It works well enough that pretty much every reader of this title is just loving the shit out of it as I am. I thought it would be stupid seeing the teasers for it. I thought it was just be a cheesy way of Marvel to make money and Bendis would look horrible, but he they don't. The story is magical. Way better then I, or a lot of readers thought. It's just so good, and now it's waaay to short.

After reading Ultimate Spiderman #13, i really, really need to know how this fits into the continuity of the Ultimate U. In both issues it seems like Miles is meeting May and Gwen for the first time. So, what the heck is going on?

Oh, and this is the best Marvel series right now. So good.

I absolutely loved this issue. I'm not a crier, but this one got me a little by surprise. I don't know what more to say that hasn't already been said. The review expressed my feelings as well. All I can add is that Ultimate Comics Spider-man and Spider-men are the best Spider comics out right now. I hope people are not being closed minded to the idea of this title because of it being Miles and not Peter. Miles is a fantastic character, IMO. These two titles are my top favorites.

First off, let me say that this is one of the best, if not the best books Marvel is putting out right now. Bendis truly understands the spider men. The writing is simply amazing, the lows are low and the highs are high. When May comes to the realization that Peter is really Peter, you can see the pain and excitement in her eyes; this book is beautifully written and drawn. The dialogue, the back and forth the amazing colors and art are all A+ What else is there to say? If you are not picking up this title you are missing out.

I have to say, the scene betweem Peter and Mary Jane just worked so well, both from the pain Parker was feeling over his own break-up with MJ, but also Ultimate Mary's sadness over Peter's death. It was just brilliant.

Seriously, I have despised almost everything that Bendis has put out in the past few years, but you can never put down his work on the Ultimate line.

The one and ONLY thing that bothered me about this issue, and it barely anything really, but the cover of Peter and Miles never happens in the comic.

Also, and its nitpicky, but I wanted to see Peter (Horizon Labs scientist) wow and floor Ultimate Tony Stark with his crazy science skills.

It was a very good issue.  There were a few minor negatives: some of the pacing and word choice in the dialog between Peter and May/Gwen seemed too casual.  Also, I didn't get why Peter would start crying at seeing May (at the end of last issue), and then only later realize (as he says at the beginning of this issue) Gwen was there.  It seems clear to me that Gwen is the one he'd be crying at seeing.  I felt like he'd have a harder time getting around the fact that she's alive in that timeline.  The whole supermodel thing was hilarious though.

Now I am sad that this is a limited series.... I will say though, it was a great interaction...not over-the-top sadness but it was actually funny and natural.

will say though, I was sad MJ just ran away from him and couldn't face him....wish she had a clousure too...God knows she needs one...or at least Peter would've comfort her ( but not mentioning Mephisto and so forth.. I will be on the lookout for the Grand Finale....Maybe MJ return just before Peter leaves and have their moment ! .

And I must say, I was skeptical about creating this Nick Fury just to cash on Samuel L. Jackson's popularity ....but he proved himself to be a great character. Not too uptight...actually caring and calm-Coolheaded.

No need to say it...this is the best series on Marvel's list this summer and I can't wait for the last issue !

I am REALLY surprised I like this book as much as I do. Mostly because I HATE Miles Morales as Spider-Man and it seems that one of the main reasons this crossover happened was to try and make him more popular. But this book is just too great to put down too much. I really appreciate that the focus is being kept more on Peter and not shoving Miles down our throats. Its not going to get me to start reading Ultimate Spider-Man again but I will definatley buy the Spider-Men trade.

Oh and one other thing I know covers dont ALWAYS represent exactly what happens in the comics but this one was just plain horrible. Nothing even REMOTELY close to the cover happened in the issue. The Variant with Aunt May and Gwen should have been the cover.
