Rocket Raccoon #1 - A Chasing Tale, Part 1

5

Rocket Raccoon is here in his own solo adventure. The thing is, he's going to need some help to get out of the huge mess he gets into.

ROCKET RACCOON #1 is on sale July 2, 2014.

The Good

A Rocket Raccoon comic written and drawn by Skottie Young. It's exactly what you would hope and dream of. Similar to fellow Guardians of the Galaxy teammate, Star-Lord (who also gets his own solo series this week), Rocket is a character that's been around since the 70s. The fact that he's so darn cute and has such an attitude makes him ooze with charm.

This new series does take place in continuity. It should also be noted that this is a T+ series. There is some implied language (using your typical #$%* format) as well as the fact that Rocket just might be quite a ladies' man creature. Similar to the idea that Star-Lord is capable of having his own adventures away from the other Guardians, that's what we're seeing here.

Skottie Young's art style is enough to bring a smile to your face. That makes it the perfect fit for this series. While Rocket Raccoon may come across as a cutesy character, that's not necessarily the case. For a little critter that often uses big guns, Young manages to easily capture his essence in each panel. There are also plenty of moments you'll find yourself chuckling to yourself. I absolutely loved the conversation between a couple of background characters early in the issue. At the same time, it's absolutely not a parody issue. We do see the other members of the Guardians doing their things. They are drawn in Young's style but as you become immersed in the story, you won't think twice about it appearing differently from the style in the regular Guardians title.

Young also sets up a story here that explains why Rocket is handling things on his own and not necessarily with the rest of his team.

The Bad

Part of me wishes this was a full fledge "all-ages" title. Unfortunately many associate "all-ages" with "kids book." Clearly this isn't a direct critique against this issue. You can see by the score how much I enjoyed it. I just feel this is a book that could help usher younger readers into comics due to Young's visuals and humor. I don't necessarily agree it's a "Teen Plus" title but I can see why it's not all-ages. Parents can and should use their discretion in determining whether the younger readers in their lives would be allowed to check this out.

The Verdict

This book is an example why we should all cheer for the comics in our lives. Skottie Young's writing and art sets the perfect tone for Rocket Raccoon's solo adventures. Don't assume this is going to just be a fun romp of an adventure featuring the lovable Rocket. You will find plenty of attitude and mayhem Rocket's been known to generate. Many of today's comics have the same feel to them and Skottie Young brings a breath of fresh air to our reading list of comic books. A Skottie Young book about a space-fairing talking raccoon-ish creature with big guns and a bigger attitude may not be for everyone. I would highly encourage those to give this a try. It's safe to say, you're going to have a blast reading this book. I love the fact that this comic exists.

@teerack: As far as I know, it's an ongoing. The solicit says, "ALL-NEW, IN-CONTINUITY SERIES!" No where, cover or tiny print, does it mention it being a mini.

That's so cool. I love how Marvel keeps coming out with solo books for characters who are traditionally just part of a team. Gives me hope I'll see that Domino solo book I've always wanted. If I can only afford one would you suggest this or Star-lord?

I'm really looking forward to this. Also interested to see if Young can write as well as he draws. I'm certainly fine with it being T+ rated, but I wouldn't have minded an all ages book either. I loved the all ages Free Comic Book Day Rocket Raccoon book.

If the story and characters are as fun as the art looks, then this will be a great new series and I cant wait to pick it up.

@teerack: That's a tough one. Even though they're both Guardians characters, they have different feels. This appears it'll be heavier on the laughs and Star-Lord will go deeper into developing his character.

@g_man: I guess I'll go for Star-Lord then just because on those grounds it doesn't sound like Rocket will change much through the course of this book, and I'd rather be aware of what kind of changes Star-Lord is going through. I'll probably get Rocket's book later on though when it's cheaper.

@saint_wildcard I also prefer my comics to not be fun, dark and only have brooding characters. You can never get to much of that these days.

Why are so many people against fun type series? Don't we have enough serious dark gritty comics. I LOVE dark STUFF, but lets get some happy fun comics coming.

To be honest, I am so glad that this isn't an all-ages book. The free comic book day issue for this done by skottie was all-ages (at least it felt that way) and it was incredibly dull and a little bit too kiddy if you get what I mean.

I asked Skottie Young at HeroesCon. He seemed confident that its an ongoing series, at least for a while.

Also, feels like people want every book to be a MAX title...but apparently they don't because those don't typically sell well. Also, book looks fun and what I saw of at HeroesCon looked great. Can't wait.

@protoflash: Just so there is no confusion, Skottie Young did not write or draw the FCBD all ages Rocket book. He only drew the cover for that.

@madeinbangladesh: the marvel movies are more often then not light hearted but the best marvel films have had their darker moments to them. Do you remember the Stane ripped the arc reactor out Tony stark chest in iron man 1 or when doctor Erskine died in Captain America? Or Zola's grand plan reveal in Winter Solider? What matters is tone and how the film transitions between them. know then to make a joke or when to play it serious. sadly Iron man 2,3, Thor 1 &2, pretty much all of the shield have such an inconsistent approach to tone. why should the audience care what's happen in Iron man 3 when Robert Downey Jr is trying so desperately to be funny by holding his gun like a gangster or arguing with his friends over silly matters. why should the audience even care about the final battle in thor 2 when the writers force thor to appear in a tube station because they haven't had a lame joke in over 2 minutes. Spiderman 1/2 X-men 1/2 First Class/Days of Future, Nolan/burton batman, all knew when the tone should be serious and when the tone should be light hearted and this contributes (along with strong writing/ good acting etc) to making a telling a better story in both comics and movies.

After seeing the reviews for this, I am definitely going to be picking it up. Might wait for Star-Lord to get on Marvel Unlimited to save some money. About the whole rating thing, is it just me or do these ratings seem incredibly inconsistent and random? I really don't get why some books are T and others T+, when there isn't really anything that makes one more adult than the other.

Well done Skottie Young, this was fantastic. Definitely adding this to my pull. I love having variety in what I read and this fills a slot. Rocket has apparently been quite busy with the ladies. That will always come back to haunt a man.
