Resurrection Man #1 - Pronounced Dead

2

The new 52 pops out another book about a not so spotlight character, Resurrection Man. Who is Resurrection Man? And is this character good enough to hold his own in his own on-going series?

Resurrection Man never dies, and when he "un-dies," he comes back with new powers, and a group of people is trying to kill him. They know he can't die, right?

The Good

I really like this character. I may even like the idea of this character more than the actual character himself though. Not only does he "resurrect," but he comes back with a new power each time. Every time he "un-dies" we get a cool thought process as he realizes his power. That, for me, was the strongest part of this book. I'm excited to see the origin of this character and how he works. Sadly, that's the only thing I liked about this book.

The Bad

I have heard of Resurrection Man before, but knew nothing about him prior to this book, and as a new reader, I didn't really feel like this was a good jumping-on point at all. Especially with the reveal in the end, another character many new readers won't know. It seems this book was made for DC fans who want to branch out and not for new comic readers.

The art feels dated. It's gritty and the colors are pretty dull. While it does, in a small sense, remind me of old EC horror books, it just doesn't seem to fit the writing, which is much more solid. Quick note: I am not a fan of the group trying to kill Resurrection Man. A harpy? Ok...

I'm confused with everything else about this book, and I know there is a lot to later be revealed. I'm not saying we need the origin right away, but I feel like I've been plunged into the middle of a novel, not the beginning.

The Verdict

I really wanted to like this book. I will continue to read the next couple issues to see how this all turns out, but I'm pretty bummed that this brand new series is ok at best. Another quick note: I read the Grifter, right before this issue, which features a "jump out of a plane moment." This issue features that same moment. Two books in the same week featuring the main character jumping out of a plane, except Grifter did it much better. It's not a good jumping on point, and frankly, there are much better books than this one out this week. Resurrection Man wasn't horrible, but it just wasn't good. I do not recommend this title.

@Barrbarr: I'm huge fan of the character and would say this pay complete justice to it, did it tell us what it was about? No it didn't and if you wanted to know more about him, look up I think it irrelevant to always give everything about the character in the first issue. It sort bug-down the story but to be honest this plot is sort of re-used in the original series an angel was after his soul

I had never even heard of this character but really liked this issue. The art and the writing was good, but whenever Resurrection Man wasn't talking and it was someone else, for some reason their dialogue was bad, but not the main characters. I love this concept and will definitely picking up the next issue. I was confused only by this bad review.

@Drakoji: Since you went out of your way to critique someone else's review, it's not "an harpy", it's "a harpy"....

I disagree, I really loved the issue. And I read some stuff about resurrection man before but never really got in depth. Yet i was able to follow it all fine. True, at the end it was a little confusing, but that's what makes me want to pick up the next issue to see what's going on.

@Drakoji: yea I was thinking about that, but I haven't heard of the character before so I assumed that the reviewer was right. I think that this book is one of my top favorites of the relaunch, I can't wait for the next issue.

How can I take this review seriously when the reviewer can't even get the "Villain" right.

Pro tips: It's not an harpy, it's an Angel.

I do not get the sense of confusion. I did not know of Resurrection Man before the relaunch announcement and this issue was incredibly straight-forward to me.

Overall, I adored it. To me it felt like a really good Top Cow book. Had that style.

Normally I tend to think you guys are pretty nice to comics, and I usually grade them a little harsher than you guys. So when I saw that this got two stars I started to worry because I had just finished getting back from the store with it. But I have to say, I loved the heck out of this. I don't think you have to know anything about the old Resurrection Man series at all to get this, he dies, he comes back with new powers, and he's been doing it for a while, that's all you need to know honestly to get this book.

I don't know how to respond to this review. I just finished reading the comic, and I loved it. As a relativity new reader I am really used to being introduced to characters and not knowing anything about them. I try to look at individual comics as parts of longer stories, and when they show me characters that I don't know anything about I tend to assume that they will tell me more about them later. I don't understand what there is to be confused about, I mean someone is trying to permanently kill the hero that seems straight forward to me. If you are talking about that they didn't show the origin and you were confused about R-Man as a character, then I didn't have that problem. I also know next to nothing about R-Man, but I am fine with that because I assume we will find out sooner rather than later.

Just as Spider said, when the villain shows up, it goes downhill. It just got a bit cheesy for me

I feel kind of sad for this book, like Matt I know of but have never read anything of the character but it sounds like a great idea and at first a was really enjoying it, I thought the story was going to have a kind of "aeroplane mystery" about it but then the villain turns up and it all goes kinda down hill. On the other hand I am a really big fan of this style of art.

At the last sentence do you mean to say that it was not horrible, but it just wasn't good? Kind of an important typo lol
