Prophecy #1 - Book One

4

Dynamite Entertainment's new cross over features Vampirella and Red Sonja, and it's all written by Ron Marz!

The Good

Ron Marz has this magical ability to make me enjoy comics that, at first glance, I would not be interested in. Ron Marz is magic. There. I said it.

The first issue does a great job at setting up the world we'll be delving into the next few months. Red Sonja is trying to end Kulan Gath who has traveled to Mayan times and has become a high priest. From there, they get transported to "the end of time" and Red Sonja meets up with none other than Vampirella.

Sometimes, the problem with cross overs is that at times they seemed forced, like these two characters were both put into the same book just because. With Prophecy, although their encounter in this issue is brief, Red Sonja and Vampirella work well on the page together, and this crossover does not feel forced.

This is an easily accessible book for new readers. I do not read Red Sonja or Vampirella, but this book didn't confuse me at all. Marz does a great job of introducing these already well know characters to a new audience without overdoing it on the exposition. I felt comfortable reading this knowing very little about these characters and felt included on the story.

Walter Geovani (art) and Adriano Lucas (colors) do a fantastic job on this book. There's a page featuring Kulan Gath holding a glowing knife that stands out above everything else in this book. The purple light shining on his face is just right, and the expression he has is perfect. There's a beautiful amount of detail within his face and wrinkles as well. The art is on par with this throughout the book. Fantastic art and fantastic writing. This is an amazing creative team-up.

The Bad

It was a great first issue, but it didn't blow me away. Part of the reason may be because I just don't like Red Sonja or Vampirella. However, this series could easily change that opinion.

The Verdict

This was a fantastic issue and a great start to this event. What I liked most about this issue is that it's easily accessible to new readers and writer Ron Marz does a great job explaining the world and characters to new readers. The art team on this book is wonderful. There's a lot of great detail and the colors really pop off the page. This is one solid cross over so far.

On the down side, I'm not a fan of these characters, so I'm a tough cookie to crack for this book.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. It's a good read and a great introduction to a cross over book.
