Plutona #1

What happens when a group of kids finds the body of a dead superhero?

Being a kid isn't easy. As adults, we sometimes forget some of the things we may have gone through. We look upon children and envy the lack of responsibilities they may have. In the first issue of PLUTONA, Jeff Lemire and Emi Lenox remind us that being a kid can be tough. We're introduced to five kids whose life is about to change when they make a startling discovery.

The kids we see here come from different walks of life. They feel like they could be average kids of today. We often see characters in comics coming across as stereotypes we've seen many times. The dialogue Lemire writes feels honest. We're seeing how the kids really feel and the different pretenses they may be putting up.

Lenox's art is great. The kids look like actual kids rather than miniaturized adults we often see. You can't help but take in the details of the environments from the houses of each kids to their surrounding neighborhood to the school their forced to spend their days. Jordie Bellaire's colors brings it all to life in the vibrant way she always does.

You may know what's going to happen in this first issue but there's no telling what comes next. Jeff Lemire and Emi Lenox do a wonderful job setting up the story. As this is the first issue, it's what necessary. We need to find out who the main characters are and they do a remarkable job showing us and making us become invested in what they're about to face. If that wasn't enough, we also get a cool back up written and drawn by Lemire. Don't miss the party on this one. We have a great set up and I can't wait to see the story soar from here.
