Pacific Rim

4

Giant mech suits versus giant monsters. What more could you ask for? Find out if the story and acting helps or harms this welcomed idea.

There are some movies that are made for the big screen. Pacific Rim is one of them. This almost goes without saying if you've seen any of the trailers or TV spots. You are practically guaranteed high octane action and visuals before stepping foot into the theater.

No Caption Provided

Thankfully the movie is more than just about the giant mech suit vs. monster action. There is a story here. In the opening, we get a brief run down on the events leading up to the present time frame. Monsters started appearing in more frequent numbers and it was up to humanity to bond together to fight a common threat. This also sets up the sense of loss for our main character and a reason he has his gung ho, stubborn and tough attitude. The attacks have been increasing and this could be the final battle for the survival of mankind.

While the human side of the story gives some meaning to the movie, it's also where it falters a little. Some of the acting and dialogue just didn't work. Some lines felt forced and cheesy and some of the acting was just too stiff. It's possible the idea was to capture an almost 80s feel. It does give it a little charm. Some of the roles are stereotypes (the wacky but brilliant scientist, the tough as nails leader with a hidden soft spot, the tough loner hero who is the only one with the answers). Again, they do add life to the movie so that it is not simply the epic effects from the battles. It just didn't feel necessary to try to throw in a rushed and slightly bizarre love story into the mix. These are the main problems I had overall. So if you can get passed them, you should love the movie.

No Caption Provided

If you're looking for huge action and visuals, this movie delivers. The visuals are pretty amazing. The action is intense. Sitting in a packed theater, I could hear one guy to my right suck in his breath and let it out in relief many times. On my left, a lady kept jumping and cringing at different scenes. In this aspect, the movie accomplishes what it set out to do. When the blows are exchanged, you'll almost feel the impact of each hit.

Although, one problem with the fighting is after a period, one of the pilots decides to use a certain weapon they apparently always had. It has great results and you can't help but wonder why the heck they didn't use this before or implement it in the other suits.

We've seen several movies with mass destruction but they don't compare to this. A recent complaint many had was the artificial feel to the end fight in Man of Steel. With this movie, you do get a sense that the events are taking place in an actual world full of people. This intensifies the already nail-biting scenes.

No Caption Provided

Bottom line, should you see this? I would say absolutely. There is more to the movie than there appears on the surface. Despite having some concepts we've seen in other media, this is a great new franchise (yes, I am hopeful this is just the beginning). The visuals are on a grand scale that needs to be seen on the big screen for full appreciation. I would even say you should see it in 3D.

This isn't just giant robots fighting monsters. You will get plenty of that but there is some heart to the movie. I could have done without some of the cheesiness in certain scenes but that's also the sort of thing many love in their summer blockbuster movies. This is exactly the sort of movie you'll want to see this summer.

Note

Legendary Comics did release a hardcover one-shot prequel comic - PACIFIC RIM: TALES FROM YEAR ZERO. It is written by Travis Beacham, who also wrote the screenplay with Guillermo del Toro. It does give a lot of the backstory but also has some character spoilers for the movie.

So, just came back from the theatre.

Well, its a 6/10 movie for me.

The first fight in the beginning of the movie was great and I really thought I was in for something special, but after that everything fell to pieces.

Sure the action scenes are cool and the CGI is great, but you only have 3 fights and the yget progressively worse and harder to follow.

The story is by far the worst thing I have seen in a movie of this magnitude, since the transformers movies! Holy crap, what a load of shit! I am not trashing the world building, which I thought was one of the great parts of the movie. I like the history, the science and the politics of that world! That was great! What was not great is that the actual story follows EVER SINGLE action movie and sports movie clichee ever! Spoilers:

- OH NO! The detonator of the nuke is broken! Hero Mc Superduper has to detonate the bomb manually!!!

- OH NO! Things are so dire, old Warhound Mc Herospeech has to sacrifice himself at the end, which gets forshadowed in the whole movie, because if he ever sets foot in a Jaeger he will die, which they tell us ever 5 minutes!!!

- OH NO! Hero Mc Superduper doesn't have a pulse!!! Please Mc Superduper! Don't die!!!! "I just give you a smooth one liner to show you and the audience that I, in fact, still live!"

I am fairly sad about that, since I liked the world and the looks of things, but all in all, a really mediocre kids movie and nothing more.

This movie was amazing, it takes the idea of giant robots fighting giant monsters in a way that made me say "this is how Power Rangers should have done it!" but in a way that feels organic and real. The storyline is pretty straight forward: Monsters appear from another dimension, humans fight back. Basically the main premise of the whole film. While I did feel that some of the characters just felt forgettable, most of the cast did a superb job in making this movie feel serious.

I also must give props to the writers of this movie for explaining things, from the monsters and where they come from, to how the Jaegers function. A lot of that stuff could have sounded like gibberish but they made it work, which I was impressed with.

Most of all, I feel this movie opens the door for other movies involving large mecha suits to make their silver screen debut in a way that we've never seen before; Gundam, for example, come to mind. But overall this movie was amazing and I agree with the 4-out-of-5 stars rating. Great movie.

Loved this movie, not just because of the awesome fight scenes, but because it got me interested in gundams and monster movies again. Only gripe was what gman mentioned about the secret weapon, but I can look past that

Saw it last night. Loved it! I've seen the classic Godzilla movies, and they did in one movie what half of the Godzilla movies couldn't do. I got lost and almost believe in these 100 ft size robots. First China was mad that we made Kung-Fu Panda first and now probably Japan is mad now too!

None of the trailers had me excited, nor the premise, but del Toro is a good director..and Charlie from Always Sunny is in it..so I'll give it a shot...

though it still reminds me of Evangelion (and yes, I know the anime isn't the first to have the ''giant robot vs monsters'' idea :P )

No Caption Provided

I would also point out that Eva aren't actually robots. So many people bring up Eva but forget that part well that... and the whole Evangelion was pretty much a deconstruction of the mecha genre as a whole and a rebuke of certain tropes in particular. Especially when you look at the journeys of Amuro Ray and Shinji Ikari respectively.

Liked the movie quite a bit, but didn't love it. As excited as I was for the action, it felt like it was just 10+ of punching over and over. Not enough of difference to make the fights interesting. Loved the characters the most, expecially Charlie Day's and Ron Perlman's. I understand how Tony is sick of every movie having the male/female leads getting together, but the two in this never get romantic in any way whatsoever. Sure there was a connection, but the don't kiss or get it on at all throughout the movie. Still a pretty solid movie, though I prefer Del Toro's past works.

Ugh, I hated almost everything about this movie aside from the visuals. Literally the only good thing, imo, is the fact that you've got giant robots vs monsters. Of course, the fights, to me, seemed pointless, as the punching did literally nothing to the monsters and with every blow they landed you could see the machines falling apart. The "hidden weapon" mentioned was something I totally agreed with - why did you have to wait so long for that? Was it because you needed it to be the Asian character who said it? Oh and the "love story" which consisted of "You're hot" "You're a sort of sexy Asian" "I'm bad at this, but if we live, let's totally hook up" was god-awful. The speeches, the conflicts, the scientist guys, just everything was too contrived and forced and blargh. I sort of had fun watching it, but by the second half I was out of it, and the more I think about it the more I hated it.

Saw it. Loved it. Already want to see it again.

And I'm a sucker for punishment...but I loved the stereotyped guys because they where so overboard. The scientists, Hannibal...it's the only film so far that made me want to jump up in the theater and start punching things like it was WWE.

My biggest gripe was the lack of action. Yes I said it. I have 3 gripes.

1) Crimson Typhoon and Chenron Alpha mechs were easily killed with no real showing of awesomeness. They were built up to be great Jaegers, yet died way to easy in a short little fight. Why bother mentioning anything about cannon fodder?! Why waste My time?!

2) The silly and unneeded slapstick comedy of the Doctors. They both were way too silly and ate up time for awesome CGI battling.

3) Coyote Tango, another great chance for awesome CGI fight and it is wasted on a little girl cowering. Considering the lack of awesome Jaeger fights, I was very upset about this.

Overall I am upset that the ONLY fight scenes involved Gipsy Danger and Striker. How lame is that?! They could should us some awesomeness of the other Jaegers. They could have cut out all the robots but Gipsy and Striker and the movie would play out the exact same. Sucks.

I loved the movie. It was really good. I know they are working on a sequel but I kinda wish they weren't. My only gripe is the ending but it's more of thing it would change.

SPOILERZZZ

So as I said I kinda wish it was a stand alone movie. I liked Charlie Hunnam's character Raleigh's arc and I liked that they had his brothers death haunt him, and even caused him to quit being a pilot. I also liked the idea that Raleigh and Stacker Pentecost(Elba) are the only 2 surviving people who have piloted a Jaeger solo. See this is where I would have expanded. So the final battle I would have liked it that after all the water had rushed back it after the explosion had Raleigh noticed the Oxygen thing and forced Mako into ejecting. Then he pilots Gipsy Danger by himself and he is attached by the category 5 Kaiju. He tackles into the Breech like they do in the movie and kills it in the Kaiju world. He then manually activates Danger's self destruct mode, but doesn't eject. Now if seeing they are doing the sequel maybe then fine he could eject, but I think killing him would be different and be a good end to his story.

But other than that I really enjoyed the movie. I love when Chuck get's his a** handed to him by Raleigh.

I wish I would have liked this movie a lot more. It gets 3 stars only from me. But I had to support a movie like this. The fact that this movie got made brought a smile to my face. I grew up watching Transformers, Anime and Godzilla movies.

The characters were okay but nothing memorable. I liked the mech/giant robot designs. But i think the movie was just a little too dark. The battles were always at night and it was always raining. Sometimes it was hard to make out what was going on.

I didn't hate it like some reviews on the internet. Hopefully I'll like the new Godzilla movie next year a little more.

There's absolutely nothing I would have changed about the movie, so I guess I would personally say it is a 5 star movie for me. I came away from the movie awed and excited. I immediately went to a second IMAX showing the next morning and I am even contemplating going to see a third showing tomorrow. Such a great film: the story, the visuals, the characters, the acting, etc...all of it was great. Such a disappointment that Grownups 2 will beat it out because general audiences enjoy cookie cutter, unfunny "comedy".

I loved it! I understand some of the qualms people had, especially with the particular weapon mentioned. What is better than Zords vs. Godzilla? I just can't wait for another and I would love to see an ongoing series chronicling the events prior to the movie. Not just character back-stories but the beginning of the incursions on

@madeinbangladesh: Idris Elba!! Man I would be the perfect Green Lantern as John Stewart.

After seeing him as "Stringer" Bell on "The Wire", I always thought that he would be an excellent Steel (if DC ever decided to remake it ala "Man of Steel") to erase the stench filled sub performance that the barely literate Shaquille O'Neal did.

I'm a huge fan of kaiju movies, but that doesn't make me blind to trash. It's the opposite.

SPOILERS WILL OCCUR NEAR THE END. I WILL REMIND YOU THEN.

I love the old man-in-suit kaiju movies. Even the worst-made of them seem to carry a charm that captured me for life. Also, let's not forget the message of nuclear ominousness that Godzilla was a walking metaphor for. These movies need not simply be punch-ups.

I LOVED this movie. It was incredibly exciting, it had heart and the performances were solid. Was it original? No. Was it unique? No. Will it win Oscars? No. HOWEVER, I am not gonna say you have to turn your brain off because that's nonsense. You should never have to dumb-down and you don't have to here.

It's a predictable plot, but it just goes to show what a difference solid performances can make to a simple, serviceable plot. The same can be said of Zombieland. If that movie contained lame actors, it'd be straight-to-DVD. The plot isn't special,. the execution is.

This is a loud, cliched, C.G. drench actionfest with a heart. It's not JUST things happening. Anyone can make robots fight, or mecha fight. It's extremely well-done and I had an amazing time with it. I recommend it highly, but I also note caution:

I don't like Seth Rogan films. Never have, never will. However, I see why some do. This is definitely a niche film.

SPOILERS NOW!

TURN BACK AND LOOK AWAY. SERIOUSLY. DO IT.

Flaws: I thought the final fight could've been a bit longer. They unveiled the biggest, most dangerous kaiju in a dark, murky underwater scene where we got no sense of scale or danger. It also seemed to get killed off fairly quickly. No sense in making unique, interesting kaiju if you can't see them. Besides that, I can't think of much else.

Oh, Charlie Day's character. The crazy scientist. He was Jar Jar.

@the_mast said:

I agree with all this, especially the Hunnam should just be English part, I even put that in my review

I think anybody who is even a mild fan of 1989's Robot Jocks will love this movie. And, i absolutely believe that the dialogue and plot were meant as an homage to the '80's Science Fiction genre.

Saw it, thought it was the same old nonsense action that the Transformers films brought to the table, except without racist humor or annoying characters. Didn't particularly like the film, especially considering I've loved everything Del Toro has had his hands on up to this point.

I feel like this is an unfair comparison but Man of Steel has humanity & weight to the (admittedly nonsensical) fights; we've followed Clark, we understand his rage when it came to confronting Zod once & for all. With Pacific Rim, we have character that never go beyond their one-sentence stereotypical descriptions, so no matter how cool the fight scenes might look, you don't have much stake in them because you don't care about the characters all that much.

I just got out of the movie an hour ago & I can't tell you a single character's name outside of Hannibal Chow, who's on-screen for 10 min, tops. If that's not the best example of the film's lack of characterization, I don't know what is.

Loved the movie. In my opinion the best action movie of the summer. The characters did what they needed to do, the monsters and robots were awesome and no silly plot twist at the end or some shit. Just big old mechs and monsters smashing the shit out of each other.
