Pacific Rim

4

Giant mech suits versus giant monsters. What more could you ask for? Find out if the story and acting helps or harms this welcomed idea.

There are some movies that are made for the big screen. Pacific Rim is one of them. This almost goes without saying if you've seen any of the trailers or TV spots. You are practically guaranteed high octane action and visuals before stepping foot into the theater.

No Caption Provided

Thankfully the movie is more than just about the giant mech suit vs. monster action. There is a story here. In the opening, we get a brief run down on the events leading up to the present time frame. Monsters started appearing in more frequent numbers and it was up to humanity to bond together to fight a common threat. This also sets up the sense of loss for our main character and a reason he has his gung ho, stubborn and tough attitude. The attacks have been increasing and this could be the final battle for the survival of mankind.

While the human side of the story gives some meaning to the movie, it's also where it falters a little. Some of the acting and dialogue just didn't work. Some lines felt forced and cheesy and some of the acting was just too stiff. It's possible the idea was to capture an almost 80s feel. It does give it a little charm. Some of the roles are stereotypes (the wacky but brilliant scientist, the tough as nails leader with a hidden soft spot, the tough loner hero who is the only one with the answers). Again, they do add life to the movie so that it is not simply the epic effects from the battles. It just didn't feel necessary to try to throw in a rushed and slightly bizarre love story into the mix. These are the main problems I had overall. So if you can get passed them, you should love the movie.

No Caption Provided

If you're looking for huge action and visuals, this movie delivers. The visuals are pretty amazing. The action is intense. Sitting in a packed theater, I could hear one guy to my right suck in his breath and let it out in relief many times. On my left, a lady kept jumping and cringing at different scenes. In this aspect, the movie accomplishes what it set out to do. When the blows are exchanged, you'll almost feel the impact of each hit.

Although, one problem with the fighting is after a period, one of the pilots decides to use a certain weapon they apparently always had. It has great results and you can't help but wonder why the heck they didn't use this before or implement it in the other suits.

We've seen several movies with mass destruction but they don't compare to this. A recent complaint many had was the artificial feel to the end fight in Man of Steel. With this movie, you do get a sense that the events are taking place in an actual world full of people. This intensifies the already nail-biting scenes.

No Caption Provided

Bottom line, should you see this? I would say absolutely. There is more to the movie than there appears on the surface. Despite having some concepts we've seen in other media, this is a great new franchise (yes, I am hopeful this is just the beginning). The visuals are on a grand scale that needs to be seen on the big screen for full appreciation. I would even say you should see it in 3D.

This isn't just giant robots fighting monsters. You will get plenty of that but there is some heart to the movie. I could have done without some of the cheesiness in certain scenes but that's also the sort of thing many love in their summer blockbuster movies. This is exactly the sort of movie you'll want to see this summer.

Note

Legendary Comics did release a hardcover one-shot prequel comic - PACIFIC RIM: TALES FROM YEAR ZERO. It is written by Travis Beacham, who also wrote the screenplay with Guillermo del Toro. It does give a lot of the backstory but also has some character spoilers for the movie.

If the plot and dialogue are even halfway decent to go along with the fantastic visuals, I'm pretty sure I'll love this movie. For the longest time I used to maintain Emmerich's Godzilla was one of the best movies ever made, stupid plot aside.

Watching it tomorrow.

@citizenbane: I'm sure people will jump on me for that complaint. But it just really bothered me. Regardless, I'm sure everyone will love the movie.

Please tell me you have an alt "CitizenGodzilla." I remember seeing that in theaters when I was young and absolutely ate it up.

The trailers/clips for this haven't won me over, but I'm really hoping the big screen experience will change that and how can anyone hate the concept? I'll definitely see it tonight and hope for the best.

I've read a lot of reviews where this movie is being compared to the Transformers movies (great action, no heart or brains). If it's anything like the first Transformers, then cool, but if it is like the last two, then heck nah! I love del Toro, but I am undecided if I want to see this movie or wait for it on Blu-Ray.

They had me at Giant Robots vs Giant Monsters, even if this was a terrible movie I was going to see it because when Giant Monster movies are bad its in the awesome unintentionally funny range.

None of the trailers had me excited, nor the premise, but del Toro is a good director..and Charlie from Always Sunny is in it..so I'll give it a shot...

though it still reminds me of Evangelion (and yes, I know the anime isn't the first to have the ''giant robot vs monsters'' idea :P )

There was a comic. Legendary has made some comics. I figured since I had the chance to watch it Monday, I owed it to you all to share my thoughts.

So they're never supposed to use robots in movies ever again because TF sucked?

@g_man: Oh I know, I was just going to say it was one of the chief inspirations for the film so when you have a film based on an anime you can expect some cheesy dialogue

@g_man: So did you actually watch it in 3D? I was just wondering if the visuals really pop out at you. I've hated 3D for awhile but it looked good when I saw Star Trek: Into the Darkness so I've been thinking of giving it another chance.

Hopefully this movie is going to be better than Man of Steel.

I might be the only person in the world who thought Man of Steel was boring as hell.

Personally, I want to see this movie and have faith in it. Visually it appears stunning and it's written/directed by Guillermo del Toro. He's always managed to get the emotional touch needed in his characters, so there is no way I would compare this to Transformers. del Toro is NOT Michael "Everything must blow-up" Bay.

Saw the movie last night. Cant say I didnt expect any of the plot since they are mostly the same plots from other movie. I was hoping Gundam would be the first live action robot movie, but at least with the Pacific Rim, they already have an idea on what will work and won't work.

Good review. I'm excited for the movie, big robots vs giant monsters? I'm in!

Does this have anything to do with Godzilla? :)

"Artificial feel" to the final battle scene in Man of Steel, are you serious, grow an imagination fools, you could not be more wrong.

I think if Zod was sent back to the Phantom Zone it would feel artificial in that heroes always win no matter what...

Man it was rough, the fights were pretty cool, the last one wasn't so great, but everything else was just like a barrage of cliches on the level of independence day.

It was just okay.

Loved the movie. In my opinion the best action movie of the summer. The characters did what they needed to do, the monsters and robots were awesome and no silly plot twist at the end or some shit. Just big old mechs and monsters smashing the shit out of each other.
