Original Sin #2 - Bomb Full of Secrets

4

The heroes are closing in on those that killed the Watcher. Or is there more to it than they thought?

The Good

This is only issue #2? Sheesh. And I mean that in a good way. There's a lot going on here. With someone like the Watcher getting killed, you would expect this to be a big deal. Everyone should get involved. It's a great reminder of how big the Marvel Universe is and we're getting some interesting pairings (Black Panther, Emma Frost, and Scott Lang?). Jason Aaron is taking us all over the Marvel Universe as well as we see the different factions trying to figure out who killed the Watcher.

And of course we can expect some twists. And we're only in issue #2!

Mike Deodato's art is always a blast to see. He gets to draw so many different characters and places. We're getting pretty lucky in this series. He even draws Iron Man with no pants. Frank Martin's colors are great as well. The New York City skyline looks gorgeous. Then seeing an explosion in that sky...woo!

The Bad

It almost feels like we're missing some of the minor details. Things are happening fast. That's not totally a bad thing as having an 'event' story drag on can really kill the vibe. We have so many heroes that have come together and you can't help but wonder how everyone was gathered and convinced to join in. There are some questions about some of the others like who teamed Doctor Strange and Punisher together and does Cap and Fury know about this or not? With so many characters, many are getting shoved to the sidelines and not seeing a whole lot of actual action.

I love Mike Deodato's art but there are some times when the inking or color almost washes out some of the details in characters. I thought it was intentional when the two "killers" were being shown, to mask their true identity but some of this also happens when the heroes are out in broad daylight.

The Verdict

ORIGINAL SIN is off to a frantic start. There's a lot going on and that's what you want and expect in a big comic book event. Jason Aaron and Marvel are unleashing all the big guns to try to sort out this big mystery. Mike Deodato's art and Frank Martin's colors will bring a smile to your face. Having a nice juicy mystery in the Marvel Universe is fun and it's a great feeling not having an idea where things are going to go. Lots of great crazy reveals and the series is just beginning.

I'm still hoping the killer is someone much bigger and not from Earth.

Deodato's art kind of bothers me...the way he uses such drastic shading on everyone makes all the characters kind of blend together into a big pattern of light and dark. It's hard to read some of the pages visually. The end was fun.

"It doesn't say anything. It's an eye, you idiot". That line actually got even funnier after the last page reveal.

A lot was going on in this issue that kind of seemed like it wasn't amounting to anything, hope this event picks up a bit more once more issues and tie-ins come in. Still not a bad start though and I'm for the most part liking what I'm seeing (although Marvel events never seem to have problems with the starts, it's the endings that have left me disappointed)

Also really liked seeing Nick Fury Sr. again, reminds me why I like the character in the first place

@johnnyconstantine:

That is Doctor Midas.

He is from Grant Morrison's Marvel Boy run. Its actually a pretty good series. I was happy to see his villainy return.

@orionbolt: That's good to know. I had absolutely no idea who that was and i don't remember there being one of those name-tag narrative boxes

@slamadams: Once his daughter showed up it seemed like a lock. The last we saw he was in a Thing like form. I find it strange that Marvel is using them in this. But the last page was more of a shocker.

"There are some questions about some of the others like who teamed Doctor Strange and Punisher together"

Isn't that part of the plot? Don't they mention that some mysterious, as-of-now unknown character has put these seemingly random teams together with some kind of purpose?

And as for other characters being sidelined, I mean, this is only the second issue (as you mentioned) with plenty of tie-ins to come. I don't know that it's necessarily something to worry about this early.

@orionbolt: I definitely believe you. Never read the Marvel Boy series so I didn't even know the character existed. I recognized the girl though from the last Young Avengers series.

Was anyone else a little confused about Cyclops' X-Men just working alongside the Avengers and SHIELD? Aren't they considered wanted terrorists?

I have a large feeling Dormammu is invloved in this with the presence of the Mindless Ones there. Just guessing though.
