Nova #10 - Chapter Ten: Land and Launch; Adventure Time; A Sneak Peek at Nova #1000

4

It's the 100th celebration of Nova. Also time for Zeb Wells to say goodbye and Gerry Duggan to say hello.

The Good

This issue continues to flesh out Sam Alexander as he embarks on his journey in becoming a hero in the Marvel Universe. It's nice to see a younger hero attempt to find his place, especially when he isn't quite sure of his full limits. Sam has become pretty adept at using the Nova power and, as is often typical in the young, he feels he is ready to take on the world (or universe). Obviously Zeb Wells (and Sam's mom) do their best to make him realize he has a lot to learn.

Of course there are still those that haven't warmed up to Sam as a Nova. Leave it to Wells to include the following comment:

"What are you telling me? That the old Nova was a total bad ass? Great. Don't get sick of hearing that..."

There's is progress on Sam's future, including what may or may not happen with the New Warriors. Carlo Barberi and David Lopez provide the art in this story. It is a bit of a celebration and we get to see several characters (sort of).

The second story is by incoming writer Gerry Duggan with art by Paco Medina. Duggan jumps right in and with Median's art, it's a seamless transition. Immediately you can see that Duggan does understand the enthusiasm the character has and leaves us with with a new twist at the end for Sam to deal with.

The cover gallery of all 100 "Nova" issues is cool to see.

The Bad

The first story, while fun, had quite a bit of Sam complaining about quite a bit. Yes, he's a teenager who suddenly finds himself with an amazing set of powers but gets to be a little too much.

I'm still trying to figure out how Robbie looks so young. After going through everything during Civil War and afterwards, I don't know if I missed something when he stopped being "Penance."

The Verdict

Fans of Sam Alexander as the new Nova will enjoy this oversized issue that closes the chapter on his introduction and sets the stage for what's to come next. Zeb Wells and Gerry Duggan both flesh out the character and we see where he'll be going after this. It might feel a little odd celebrating 100 issues of Nova with Sam but hopefully this could be a sign that the past and history haven't been forgotten. Duggan sets up an interesting direction for, at least, the next issue. There's even a cute back up with art by Yale Stewart everyone should enjoy.

"What are you telling me? That the real Nova was a total bad ass.

You Know if Rich Rider was trapped the Candyverse, I would be a lot less angry. but Speed and Justice continue to be the worst friends in the history of EVER!! So instead of going into space trying find Richard Rider or at the very least telling Sam about Robert Rider who has possession of the Worldmind. They just decided well he's not are Nova but he'll do is really shitty.

You can add Starlord on the list of Rich's worst friends.

@humanrocket: At this point I would put Star-Lord on Nova greatest villains list. Star-Lord doesn't have any super powers and Nova could back hand the Hulk and has a healing factor that could give Wolverine a run for his money . Star-Lord and Thanos are alive but not Nova and non of them should of survived that especially not Star-Lord and every time someone asks him, he looks at them angrily and just walks away also in the Past Star-Lord has shown he is willing to sacrifice millions of lives to accomplish his goals while Nova believe the ends never justify the means. From an interview with Bendis he said Peter made a deal with the devil to come back so I think he Betrayed Nova or is working with Thanos maybe a sleeper cell or for his own reasons but he does have a movie coming out soon so don't think Bendis is going to go there even tho that's the only logical conclusion I could think of at this point.

You mean how Peter killed so many people trying to stop The Fallen One? yes peter has been shown to cross that line and his decisions in the past have always come to haunt him. But i wouldn't be surprised if he was in the works with Thanos I have always had this watch your back with Peter even with the first incarnation of the GOTG during the annihilation series.

@humanrocket: As much as I love the Nova and Star-Lord Bromance I think the idea of those two coming to blows is an interesting idea kind of like Marvel Cosmic Schism. My hope still is that Quasar and Cosmo are searching the Galaxy for there friend and Master, Richard Rider at this point that's the only reason why I would except "The Protector of the Universe" not being in Infinity.

There was this hope in me that Infinity would be the way that Nova would be able to escape the cancer verse because of the inter dimensional travel in the New Avengers and with Thanos being alive it would have been a great ideal to bring him back but with issue 6 ending today my hopes could still go on with your theory.

@humanrocket: Is Richard Rider still in the Cancerverse? because in Avengers Assemble, The Guardians and the Avengers went into the Cancerverse.

@trevel8182: didn't read that issue. I've only picked up the current issues of Avengers Assemble tie-ins for infinity.

@trevel8182: I'm not sure if that arc in Avengers Assemble is canon.

@trevel8182: But in Guardians of the Galaxy 9, a Bendis book, Gamora doesn't even know that Thanos made it out of the Cancerverse, even though she was there when it happened in that arc and...I...I just don't even know anymore....

I don't really care that Sam is Nova. I just wish they would hurry up and explain why Rider didn't come back with Thanos and Star-Lord. With the pains they're taking to NOT mention it, it had better have an AMAZING pay-off.

I've haven't read many Nova stories with Rider in it but I noticed that Sam called him "Rick." Was he ever called Rick prior to that or is that a new thing? Could be a sign of whats to come for the character assuming the Disney rumors are true about them hating his name.

The name Rick Rider certainly has less chance of being construed as obscene.
