Nightwing #18 - Slow Burn

4

As if things in Dick Grayson's life weren't bad enough, it's about to get a worse in a way he never thought possible.

The Good

Things have been tough for Nightwing lately. With Death of the Family, the loss of Haly's Circus and Requiem, the normally more upbeat hero is dealing with a lot. But what makes Nightwing stand out from other heroes is his ability to overcome the hardships.

As a Requiem title, we do see some reflection over the recent events dealing with Damian. Kyle Higgins gives us some great moments and the reference to what happened last issue was a great touch. There's a lot of opportunity for Dick to reflect on himself and what's been going on. This is definitely the opportunity for a turning point.

The return of the Dealer gave a nice creepy scene. It also plays an important role in further defining who exactly Nightwing is and what he really values.

The twist at the end was brilliant. It could be seen as a little cliché but seeing where this goes is going to be great.

The Bad

There were some panels where the art was off. I always envision Dick as more on the slender side and some panels had him a bit too solid. The way he looked in the coffee shop with Sonia also came across as a little weird. His eyes and lips made him look like a different character. Batman also didn't quite look like the Batman we have in the New 52 when he shows up at Dick's place. It was an enjoyable issue but the art caused moments of distraction.

The Verdict

Nightwing's gone through some tough times and everything is about to change. This issue is a great way of looking back over the recent events and reflecting on them while also setting up a huge new direction for the character and title. Kyle Higgins clearly has a plan with what he's constructing in this title and the level of excitement has been elevated to a new level. There were some moments the art became a distraction, which was unfortunate for an issue full of emotion and action. This was an issue containing separate sections but each event flowed nicely into the next without having a jarring feeling. If you haven't been reading NIGHTWING for some reason, this is the perfect time to find out what you've been missing.

Really excited for the new direction. I love that while you read Kyle Higgins' Nightwing you can tell how big of a fan of the character he is.

On the cover, that starfish that Nightwing has for a right hand was just too much. How much space does he have between his fingers for crying out loud? He needs two or three more fingers on that hand, to fill the ginormous gaps between his fingers.

Oh god! It can't be unseen! It's like a fat little man made out of Play-Doh.

Right? I just knew I'd be looking at hands the entire issue, to see if he did it again. I just couldn't do it. lol

I just recently fell off Nightwing in an attempt to buy more creator owned titles. Seeing Juan Jose Ryp on art made it tough not to pick this issue up.

I didnt liked this.

This crying over Damian kind of reminds me of Tim Drake when they killed his dad and all his friends and then he turn into miny bruce

And is so underwhelming, I was really enjoying Nightwing up to this point, now it feels that is heading to a very boring direction and in addition to that everything that was done in the last 16 issues just accomplished absolutely nothing.

and I absolutely HATED the ending, I dont have that much experience with Higgins writing but I know he is not that hack of a writer.

I know that the Tony Zucco Is Alive! is not his idea, It had to be the editor who mandated this piece of crap, is just such a mediocre plot, its such and overdramatic piece of bad writing that i cant believe that DC is actually expecting us to eat it

This issue knocked it out of the park for me. When I saw the covers for the Requiem issues here, this is what I thought they were all going to be like. And then about 5 seconds later I realized without Steph, Cass, or the REAL Tim Drake (not that pale imitation Lobdell has been crapping out), Nightwing was the only character who had any meaningful interaction with Damian, and most of that wasn't really cemented until mere pages before his death. At the time I was reading it, the art didn't bother me, but looking back it is a bit janky at times. I was hoping for the other side of the phone call we saw in Batgirl #18, because without that I have no idea why she's on the cover.

I hated this art. It all just looked so weird, especially everyone's lips. Can't wait for Brett Booth. AND, I can't wait for Nightwing to go to CHICAGO!

Higgins said Brett Booth is taking over the art next issue, so I'll pick Nightwing back up with issue 19.

@Rixec: He should have kept it instead of putting it on Robin's grave.

I think he got ripped off too. I don't know anyone that owns an X-Bax480. What an idiot.

I think he might have ordered it before Damien died.

I enjoyed this issue.I think it was quite good, the twist at the end was a little bit of a surprise, but it really makes me question Nightwing's motives for being a crimefighter.Even after the events that were to too long before it.I'm quite intrigued about what booth will do on art duties coming up,i hope they at least explain the suit redesign,i'd find it weird otherwise.

I think the Death of the Family and Damien is too much too soon for these stories. They should have been spaced out it seems like. It seems awkward that the family would be so mad at Batman even after the events with Joker. I would think the death of Damien would overshadow all of that and bring a family together no mater how dysfunctional. I think Dick came off a a little self centered here, and I liked the issue, but Bat-man just lost his son and Dicks worried about whether Bruce is keeping something from him. That just seem a little more about previous story arches that happen than what the character would do in the moment I could be wrong.

Art is not normally an issue for me, but I had this issue in my hand today, and had to put it back. On the cover, that starfish that Nightwing has for a right hand was just too much. I agree with almost everything in this review - the only difference being the art. It didn't bother me that much, but that's largely because I was expecting Ryp's style this month. It totally threw me for a loop last month though. That said, I'm excited to see what Brett Booth brings to this book. Overall, I really did love this issue - especially the twist at the end.
