The Good
Things have been tough for Nightwing lately. With Death of the Family, the loss of Haly's Circus and Requiem, the normally more upbeat hero is dealing with a lot. But what makes Nightwing stand out from other heroes is his ability to overcome the hardships.
As a Requiem title, we do see some reflection over the recent events dealing with Damian. Kyle Higgins gives us some great moments and the reference to what happened last issue was a great touch. There's a lot of opportunity for Dick to reflect on himself and what's been going on. This is definitely the opportunity for a turning point.
The return of the Dealer gave a nice creepy scene. It also plays an important role in further defining who exactly Nightwing is and what he really values.
The twist at the end was brilliant. It could be seen as a little cliché but seeing where this goes is going to be great.
The Bad
There were some panels where the art was off. I always envision Dick as more on the slender side and some panels had him a bit too solid. The way he looked in the coffee shop with Sonia also came across as a little weird. His eyes and lips made him look like a different character. Batman also didn't quite look like the Batman we have in the New 52 when he shows up at Dick's place. It was an enjoyable issue but the art caused moments of distraction.
The Verdict
Nightwing's gone through some tough times and everything is about to change. This issue is a great way of looking back over the recent events and reflecting on them while also setting up a huge new direction for the character and title. Kyle Higgins clearly has a plan with what he's constructing in this title and the level of excitement has been elevated to a new level. There were some moments the art became a distraction, which was unfortunate for an issue full of emotion and action. This was an issue containing separate sections but each event flowed nicely into the next without having a jarring feeling. If you haven't been reading NIGHTWING for some reason, this is the perfect time to find out what you've been missing.
