New Mutants #31 - Fear Itself Tie-In, Part 3

3

The New Mutants have made their way into Hel through a suspicious bargain with Mephisto, but will they be too late to save Dani Moonstar?

The Good

I liked that this issue got a little adventurous with the concepts presented; the whole "consumed, so let's show you some memories" sequence really struck me as a tonal shift from what we've been used to with New Mutants. That's needed every once and awhile.

The Bad

I'm not sure what gave me such a bad taste about this issue, but some parts just really seemed slow-paced. Nate Grey really doesn't seem like a good fit for this team, and he hasn't exactly done much since joining up.

I ask this every issue, but where's Cannonball?

With the serious tone of the story, I found the cartoony art style wasn't really a good match. While the monster designs were awesome, the characters looked quite silly at times. This carries over to the next issue, as the cover looks just farcical.

The Verdict

I feel like this series is lagging a bit behind in terms of Fear Itself, as it's just getting to the meat of its story when the main book is almost done wrapping up. I can see New Mutants' tie in ending with the next issue (hopefully), and getting back to the "good stuff." With X-Men: Regenesis on the horizon and the New Mutants joining Cyclops' team, I hope they're put to better use than they are now.
