Moon Knight #5 - Scarlet Review

5

This is all about Moon Knight kicking major butt. It's a glorious story.

The Good

This is a true example of how a self-contained comic issue can be a wonderful thing. As much as I've been loving this series, there have been some times this approach has left me wanting a little more in terms of story developments. This is also a great example of the type of hero Moon Knight is. He's on a mission and does things in a way only he can.

The story is simple. Warren Ellis gives Moon Knight the task of trying to free a kidnapping victim being held in an abandoned building, full of armed thugs. With all the attitude we've seen Moon Knight (or should we say Mr. Knight) have, it's a glorious story.

Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire do wonders here. I'm not necessarily a big lover of violence but dang if this isn't fantastic to see. Shalvey manages to make this extended fight scene work. At no point does it feel tedious as he completely mixes things up from person to person. This really is something you need to see for yourself.

The Bad

It's unfortunate the building only have six floors and not more. It would have been great to see this go on even longer.

The Verdict

This comic is pretty much everything I could want in a Moon Knight comic. Warren Ellis delivers another self contained story but it is gloriously brought to life courtesy of Declan Shalvey and Jordie Bellaire. If you've ever been curious about what Moon Knight would do against a building full of thugs, this is the issue for you. We get fight after fight and you're going to want it to keep going. This issue really puts Shalvey's storytelling to the test due to the minimal dialogue and he passes with flying colors. Don't miss out on this issue. Reading this will make it clear why I love Moon Knight so much.

This just leaves me wondering what if they actually tried one big story? Maybe all of this gets connected in number 6.. Otherwise I'm kind of disappointed.

It hasn't been one continuous story thus far?

Damn, I thought last issue was great. This was so brutal, I loved it. The end with the drone was especially cool. I wonder what the team has in store for their last issue?

@wolverine08: You should, its a really good. Its everything a moon knight fan would ever want, with some amazing fights. The stories are all interesting, just not connected..yet.

Cannot wait to get this comic now, to bad I am going to have to wait to read it great review, hopefully the book keeps being great when the new team comes on.

@wolverine08: With the next issue, the next writer is going to keep the same style though.

@dagmar_merrill: and honestly I don't see a problem in that. These one off remind of the good ol days of Batman TAS

I don't know what else to say about this series at this point, just perfection on every level from the creative team. And yeah Tony, the only thing that would have made this any better would have been if it was a 50 story skyscraper.

Roll up those sleeves Marc, roll them up tight.

Behold his power. The power of being a literal lunatic. There's almost a supernatural element of having Khonshu's boon while fighting at night. Seems like he has certain buffs like an aura of intimidation, protections from evil and such. For all I know it's the costume that's simply making him too freaky for normal thugs to fight properly. This issue is all about my favorite aspect of Moon Knight, the part where he puts the hurt on a bunch of dudes. This run has been amazingly good. It's going to be hard to top after the next issue.

@k4tzm4n This whole issue needs to be in the battle of the week. Both a Drive and The Raid reference in one comic.

This, man I f*cking love Warren Ellis.

Stabbing men in the nipples.

Deadpool doesn't do that, but MK does.

@theacidskull: That end quote was so bad ass

I nearly lost it at that

Plus despite all the gritty gore and weirdness, Ellis can sure make you laugh. This issue was hilarious, action packed, badass, and f*cking funny.

You could tell from the cover alone this was going to be a kick-ass issue. Not that they all haven't been awesome! I'd so play a MK video game like this!

The Cover reminds me of Oldboy..:p

This book just continues to get better and better. Too bad Ellis is leaving after #6. This book is the way Daredevil needs to be, not that crap by Waid.

@jonny_anonymous: Exactly what I was going to say, cover reminds me so much of The Raid :)

I think this has turned me into a complete Moon Knight fanboy. Just seeing him decimate those goons without even breaking a sweat was beyond awesome.

Great issue. Definitely my favorite of the run. I love the suit. Nothing wrong with looking dapper when taking down a building of thugs.

God, they got the feel of Moon Knight perfectly.

The things MK is able to do with those Moon-a-rangs is downright terrifying.

Posted by dimitridkatsis

WOW! Moon Knight gets a Die Hard/Raid treatment? Cool.

i was thinking that after reading the issue myself. Im also making connection more towards Moon Knight being the answer to DC's Rorschach, especially in this issue. I know people have been saying that, but this issue in particular makes the connection uncanny.

This was the first issue of the series that I have read. Pretty good, pretty pretty good.

Posted by WaveMotionCannon

This book, DAMN!! Moon Knights version of the Raid and he gets into a knife fight with Morris Day what more can you ask for?

Posted by akbogert

I pity Brian Wood. There is almost no conceivable way he can live up to what Ellis has been accomplishing here (and the art team will have a heck of a job as well).

I picked this book up from the first issue knowing nothing whatsoever of Moon Knight and he has rapidly become one of my favorite people in the Marvel U.

Posted by ArchiZoom

I love this comic, my only complaint would be that they seem very short

Posted by longbowhunter

@wavemotioncannon: Hell yes. I was hoping someone would mention Morris Day decked out in some Prince hand-me-downs fighting Moon Knight...with gold knives no less. That was my favorite thing ever!

Posted by WaveMotionCannon

@longbowhunter: lol. I was like this dude looks so familiar, all they needed was Jerome sneak attacking MK with a mirror.

This had to have been the best issue of anything I've read that has come out in the last year or so. The way every bone-crunching blow popped out was just extraordinary. Reminded me a lot of Ellis and Aja on Secret Avengers 18. Absolutely fantastic.

The other thing that really stood out to me was the obvious reference this issue made to Asian action films like The Raid, Tom Yum Goong and Oldboy.

Edit: I don't even remember consciously changing my avatar. It was just that good, I guess.

Wow wow wow wow wow. Amazing.

This was such a bad ass chapter. I love love love this.
