Ted McKeever takes us on a trip to a strange town with some strange things about to happen.
The Good
Time for something new and different! You can't argue with a comic that has a story to tell. McKeever introduces us to a small town that is home to a chicken factory known for its giant enhanced poultry products. Our main character is a quiet man named Catfish Mandu. Catfish works by the nuclear furnace and its his job to make sure the poultry is processed through it. You might be able to see where this is going. If you've seen the cover, you know the book will have some explosive moments.
And that's just the beginning of the bizarre nature to the story. Whether it's a strange chicken lurking in the shadows leaving a gift on a doorstep or the roller skating Kitten Kaboodle (who you don't want to mess with), it's hard to say where this series is going.
That's what makes it so interesting. It's something new and different. It grabs your attention. There's a story to be told mixed in with McKeever's art.
The Bad
The bizarre and confusing nature is great but it also makes you wonder what's going on and what will happen. This is a three-issue miniseries at $4.99 for 36 pages. It's an interesting story but you have to wonder how the rest it will play out.
The Verdict
For those always wanting to try something different, MONDO definitely fits that bill. Ted McKeever introduces us to an interesting little world and you can't be sure what is going to happen next. That mystery makes the series fun and exciting but also gives some tiny feelings of doubt. With mutated people, deadly women and a strange chicken, this isn't something you'll want to miss. It's strange enough to grab your attention but not too strange where it feels forced, strange just to be strange. I have absolutely no idea what could or will happen in the next issue but you can bet I will find out the day the next issue is released.
