Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #2 - 99 Problems... Two of Five

5

A perfect example of the Parker Luck. Spider-Man finds himself in the midst of a wacky and surreal battle against a huge number of his foes. Good luck, Spidey. You'll need it.

The Good

Matt Kindt and Marco Rudy are delivering a great and different Spider-Man story. For as long as Spidey's been in action, we've seen pretty much every scenario he could get in. Having to fight pretty much all his enemies and with the visuals Rudy throws in, this is a fight unlike any we've seen before.

It's almost hard to tell who's having more fun with this series. Kindt gets to come up with several different scenarios for Spidey to face his foes. Rudy mixes up the style and you really have to stop at each page and take in all the detail. The variety of the style matches the state of Spidey's mind. He believes he's been drugged by Arcade and that very well may be the case. Seeing the different styles meshed together on a single page may be a little distracting for some but, visually, it stands out from other adventures. It truly illustrates what we can assume is going on in Spider-Man's head.

Apart from the visual feast, we really get to see what makes Spider-Man the great hero he is. The odds are incredibly stacked against him and of course he's going to fight with every ounce of strength and determination he can call forth. And throughout all this, there is still the bigger mystery of who exactly is behind all of this.

The Bad

This may not be your typical Spider-Man story. That's what I'm digging about this. That being said, it might be too abstract for some.

The Verdict

This is a great use of the Marvel Knights imprint. We get a slightly darker story presented with a great variety of art style. Matt Kindt has placed Spider-Man in an interesting situation, forced to face numerous enemies while Marco Rudy provides the art in a way we really haven't seen before in a Spider-Man comic. If you've been missing Peter Parker or just want to see a story that doesn't have to be tied to the current continuity, this is a great story to check out. You'll be blown away by the visuals and get to witness Spider-Man fight like he's never fought before.

Why can't Kindt write like this when he does DC work? This series has been the best Spidey story in years so far I just hope it can keep it up.

Currently loving this. If the standard of the new Marvel Knights branding is this, I'm a happy fan. Just hope others are picking it up.

@battheman008: I have to agree with Jonny, Slott has overstayed his welcome and its time to bring in someone new.

If that's what you want fine. But Slott is still producing a high quality Spidey story. He has created a unique and fantastic story not seen before. I like twists in my comics.

I'm going to have to agree. I like what Slott is doing. Some may hate what happened with Pete, but the story is interesting and I'm enjoying it. I just wonder had he not gotten rid of Pete, if people would still be acting the way they are towards Slott. You have to admit he's done some great things with Spider-man 2099 and linking his world to the current Spidey world, as well as some other things going on.

@idontlikebirds: I may have not liked what Slott did with Peter but I did enjoyed the spiderman 2099 story and how spock thought himself as inferior.I am curious to see what happens with next Goblin story line he has set up the events for it well so have to give him credit there.

I would actually like this, mainly because would be change for spider-man that isn't a shock value gimmick.

I would be down for Kindt on Spider-man as well. Slott has overstayed his welcome and his work post-ASM 700 has been average at best.

I'd prefer if Kindt had a different artist with him. Marco Rudy's work is beautiful and unconventional, but I don't know if it would really work for an ongoing. For a mini-series like this, it is absolutely perfect, but I could see getting a little tired of it month-after-month.

There's no reason he HAD to get rid of him. All it did was piss off fans to gin up sales. And we are stuck with a pretentious, MURDERING AND SELF RIGHTEOUS HYPOCRITE for a protagonist. Slott can stick it.

I'm highly interested in this one, but am not quite sure if going for single issues or trade. Actually, I would probably like buying a collected HC but I just can find the announcement for the TPB, no HC whatsoever. Anyone any clue if there will be a HC and when?
