Kick-Ass 2 #3

4

Kick-Ass 2 continues (finally) and be prepared for some insanity. What starts out like a simple continuation of Dave's adventures with his new superhero friends turns into something else. It's from the mind of Mark Millar so we get what we expect...and then some.

The next issue of Kick-Ass 2 finally arrives. It's hard to recall when the last issue was out but we're able jump into the action. It's not just more of the same as the plot moves forward in a way that will amp things up.

The Good

The whole idea of Kick-Ass is to give the feeling of a normal person dressing up as a superhero to fight crime. This series has followed the original by including other normal people and giving Dave a team and others to relate to. Reading this makes you feel like you're watching one of those documentaries on real-life superheroes. Then Mark Millar pulls the rug out from beneath you.

Known for pushing the boundaries, Millar doesn't hold back here. It's not all about the heroes fighting crime. For a little bit I started wondering where this was going to go. Including others has been interesting and helped to make this different from the first series but it didn't feel as if anything major was going to happen. That changes here. There's a couple pretty big developments that will have big repercussions.

John Romita Jr's breakdowns with Tom Palmer's finishes and Dean White's colors are a joy to see. Romita's art is sometimes hit or miss with me but I dig his style with the extreme situations that Millar comes up with. I couldn't imagine someone else doing the art.

The Bad

When did the last issue come out? I can be understanding of delays. I won't go on a tirade if we don't have a set schedule. It is disappointing and does interrupt the flow of the series. It's not a perfect series but I enjoy the wackiness that Millar and Romita Jr come up with.

There's almost a feeling like this was two separate issues. There's almost a distinction between a calm portion and the crazy parts. That could help in catching readers off guard but makes it feel a little weird.

The Verdict

We're finally treated to another installment of Kick-Ass 2. This series has been taking Dave in a different direction. He's found others that share his passion of dressing up and fighting crime. His world is almost perfect but...you know that can't last. Mark Millar adds his touch and moves the story along. John Romita Jr's art with Tom Palmer's finishes and Dean White's colors makes the series visually appealing. Romita Jr's art depicting such intense scenes is something to see. If you thought this volume was just going to be Kick-Ass going out on street patrols with his new friends, you will be pleasantly surprised after reading this issue.
