Kaptara #1

Chip Zdarsky and Kagan McLeod present a space tale with a different feel to it.

The Good

I feel like I've read so many sci-fi/space exploration comics. I'm always skeptical about them since many fall a little flat. With KAPTARA, there is a feeling of the story being a little different. As you read through the first issue, you won't be exactly sure where things are going. It ends up keeping readers on their toes. You might think you see how the characters are going to develop and then the story takes a bit of a turn. Chip Zdarsky takes some time in introducing us to the characters but there's no telling who is safe!

Just as you're getting to know the crew aboard this ship, a situation arises to put them to the test. Of course something has to go wrong. Problems are what drive stories. Kagan McLeod's art gives the story a nice feeling. It doesn't have the "typical" feeling or look you might expect.

In some ways, it's like we're getting more than one story here. There's a couple turns in the story that really mixes things up in the pacing of the issue. It adds to the "not knowing what's next" feeling.

The Bad

I didn't mind the shifts in the plot but it might give a slightly disjointed feeling to some readers. I did like that we're introduced to all the characters but with where the story goes, you might question some of the pacing in the beginning.

This issue does set things up for the series but it's hard to fully tell where the series will go from here.

The Verdict

Strap on your space boots and get ready for Chip Zdarsky and Kagan McLeod to take you on a space trip with unexpected twists. Right from the beginning you'll see there's a different feeling to this story. We get some fascinating visuals and an interesting set up that makes you wonder what will happen next. Some of the change in the story's direction might give a slight disjointed feeling but it will also keep readers on their toes. It's not your typical sci-fi story and you definitely need to be prepared to expect the unexpected.
