Justice League 3000 #2 - Things Fall Apart

5

The League of the Future is in shambles at at each others’ throats. Naturally, it’s an amazing time to throw them onto the front lines against an enemy who’s nearly omnipotent.

The Good

Keith Giffen has often epitomized hit-or-miss writing for me. When he hits, he hits out of the park, but when he misses, he was never even close. I’ve also often found that I like him a lot more at DC, which would explain why I absolutely love the first two issues of this book. Giffen’s greatest strengths have always been writing absurd, but not quite satirical and not overtly funny, books with a darkly comedic core. When he teams with J.M. DeMatteis, the good parts tend to shine all the brighter and bad parts tend to recede into the shadows. This book may very well be one of the best examples. The core Justice League has been resurrected by the twins Teri and Terry (DON’T call them the Wonder Twins) with fragments of their memories and personalities, but the missing parts seem to be the ones that work. Flash is a humorless wimp, Green Lantern has no ring and is by the book to a fault, Wonder Woman constantly wants to pound anything that moves (in more ways than one) and the World’s Finest are constantly trying to find ways to undermine and belittle each other. When they wind up on what was supposed to be some routine enforcement on a backwater world things, of course, go horrifically off script. Giffen has nailed all the characters’ voices in the book, you could put lines on a blank page and have a reasonably easy time assigning each one to the correct character, and the book has the tone of the Super Friends without the iron grip of Standards and Practices squelching the writers’ creativity.

Howard Porter spearheads the linework, giving every panel and beautiful, heady feel. This is one of the few books that I feel revels in the absolute, inherent bizarreness of technology and rather than trying to make the year 3000 look “realistic,” he goes for making it look cool. Like somewhere you’d actually want to visit, but probably not live. I absolutely adore the character designs as well. You could easily pick them out of a crowd, but the looks have been updated enough to be so much more than futuristic retread. These outfits stand proudly with Justice League 1,000,000. Hi-Fi’s colors are precisely the right blend of bright and grim. This isn’t a gritty, realistic book, but neither is it joyful and uplifting. It’s exactly what it needs to be, it’s Blade Runner with the sun up.

The Bad

Reality-warping villains are often tricky to handle as there’s really no good reason for them to have any kind of difficulty with anything beyond their own stupidity. The villain is far, far from resolved by issue’s end, but I’m hoping they come up with something better than a deus-ex machina or “villain dumb, make stupid mistake.” As often happens with books where Giffen is a writer, there is a LOT of text per panel and a decent chunk of it is expository, though very little of it describes what is happening in the panel, which is a plus.

The Verdict

This book balances humor and action amazingly well. By setting the story a thousand years in the future, but using a familiar cast, we get a best of both worlds situation where DeMatteis and Giffen are free to work their strangely dark humor, but we, as readers, still have a solid anchor point. Porter and Hi-Fi’s art is just cartoonish enough to be delightful right up until it needs to be dark and even a little messy.

I don't think I'll waste my money on this. I can't believe issue 1 got 4 stars!! I didn't even finish it. I was so bored with it I decided to quit wasting my time.

I'm having a blast with this book so far....it's quickly becoming my favorite DC book....it's just so much fun! with everyone just flat out refusing to call Superman anything but Clark, Wonder Woman's hormones, and Batman and Superman constantly at each others throats you can't help but have a great time with this

Wow, Y'all finally reviewed a Dc book. I thought you all had dropped Dc. I remember at one time this site was quick with Dc reviews but now it seems as though dc books are almost a second thought.

Wow, am very surprised with this, maybe JL 3000 isn't a waste of space, but i'll try it when the TP comes.

I kinda liked the first issue, but I found the characterisation to be awful. If that continues here, I don't think I'll continue with this.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the characterization either. All of them kinda just seem like..dicks. Batman's constantly pushing Clark's buttons just to push his buttons, Clark's an egotistical jerk, WW's just crazy. Flash and GL are the only ones I liked.

@the_stegman: I felt that Lantern did absolutely nothing, and Flash was a real downer. So I didn't like any of them. I really, really liked the idea, and the art style, but it's just NOT what I want to read.

Isn't it DeMatteis the one doing the scripting while Giffen does the plotting?

So Wonder Woman is just horny eye candy? Well, what's new with DC and their treatment of women. :/

This a really good issue, I give it an 8. I really like how it's a blend of comedy and action, make's it more fun. It's really heavy dialogue wise, like lots of text, but it's still a really good issue.

I've loved the first two issues. This issue was so funny, and in their imperfection they feed off each other so well. The Justice League 3000 crew harass each other about their power and abilities like comic fans do with each other. The regular Justice League are companions so dialogue like this would never exist, but THESE guys are definitely not friends and its hilarious. I plan to continue to read this because I believe its worth it and want to support it!

I'd be quite shocked if the characters didn't get some form of development. I think this book will be rewarding in the long run. I can't wait to see where it goes.

This issue was nice. Ending was pretty good. Only problem i have with this series is there is no Cyborg. He seems like the perfect guy to be in this book.

Why anyone is supporting JL3000 after what they did to Kevin Maguire (who was supposed to be the original artist for the series and then they just booted him) is beyond me. Or any DC book that has kicked out creators for daring to expand a books horizons (JH Williams III, Blackman, Roberson, Robinson, etc. etc.). But I guess DC's loss is Marvel and Indie books gain :)

@the_stegman: another bonus this leaves room for a lot of character development maybe wonder woman will act as a woman, flash will be funny, superman will stop acting like a jerk and become friends with batman, green lantern will get a ring tho not technically character development

Was anyone else slightly irritated that Green Lantern looks like the Spectre in some of the pages?

@the_stegman: I liked the first issue but it didn't wow me completely. This second issue though is really worth your time imo. It's fun and entertaining and the character interactions are great.

I think I'll wait until the Volume releases. The Volumes are generally cheaper than the individual issues which saves me enough to buy another comic.

I got into the series hoping for the same greatness I got from Justice League Beyond and I was sorely dissapointed
