Justice League #26 - Forever Numb

4

More is revealed about the other members of the Crime Syndicate.

The Good

We've been watching the Crime Syndicate and other villains move throughout the DCU but we still don't know the full details as to what happened to Earth 3, the Syndicate's home dimension. Geoff Johns comes up with a great way to fill us in on more of the story behind some of the characters. It seems like we should already know about them. The Syndicate members are backwards evil versions of our heroes yet they're stories still offer some surprises.

One member, in particular, takes the center stage in this issue (and it's not who you might think based on the cover. What's fascinating is seeing the story unfold from different angles. It's interesting that issue 25 was released a couple weeks ago and we're already getting this one in the same month. Johns fills us in on the other members besides Owlman and Ultraman by jumping back five years ago for some of the characters. It's still an eerie feeling seeing these twisted versions of the characters we know. You almost get a dirty feeling inside seeing them portrayed in this way.

The art by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado is as great as you'd expect. With the art and colors, the story has a great feel to it and you can't help but feel pulled into the story. Seeing the backstories on these members for the 'first time' in the New 52 is something that can only be done once. It's great seeing them handled by a top notch creative team.

The Bad

The story is moving forward a bit but this is more of a focus on the other members of the Syndicate. There are definitely some cool moments but compared to last issue and some of the seeds planed in this one, it feels like we're going to get an even bigger issue next time.

The cover is a bit misleading. We do see Power Ring's story but the image on the cover doesn't have anything to do with this issue. It looks more suitable for next month's issue of FOREVER EVIL.

The Verdict

Geoff Johns continues to flesh out the members of the Crime Syndicate. You would think it'd just be a matter of taking the origin we know and turn everything around so it's all evil. Johns does a great job in fleshing them out and making us understand where they're coming from. One member takes the center stage in the 'narration' portion of this issue and it will be interesting to see how things progress for this character. Ivan Reis and Joe Prado do a fantastic job with the art. It's a weird feeling seeing the flashbacks for some of these characters. There are still some mysteries to see unfold and Johns plants some big seeds for the next issue. The story keeps getting better and better.

Atomica's origin story was probably my favorite. That one scene when she falls into the STAR LABS room and you see "BEWARE: RAY PALMER! DO NOT RELEASE!" ...well, something like that. That was just awesome though. Ate that up. I love these new origin stories and feel they're very much needed to further enjoy Forever Evil.

@br_havoc: I'm basically just sensing marvel fanboyism. You obviously aren't a DC fan because if you were then you would be enjoying forever evil and JL like everyone else

@xescapetheliesx: Yeah because that makes sense because I dislike this event and feel it was poorly done compared to Marvel's most recent one then I must just hate DC.

If you had bothered to read my first post I clearly say that DC has owned Marvel in the event department for years but I felt this one has been very weak it still has time to come together it which is what I am hoping.

I mean if I was to take your comment at face value its that to be a DC fan you must love everything they do and not have an opinion?

@johnnygat: @comicbookfan93: Forever 2 has the answer to both questions. Owlman wants to kill him, but Ultraman wants to throw him whatever their running from(B'wana Beast)

I think that Superwoman is playing both Ultraman and Owlman. She's the key to the story with the hoodman.

@captain13: Actually, a lot of people give a f about these characters. They're awesome and different from your super hero monster of the week get-up. It really is a blessing how Dc rebooted itself. HERdeherher!

Okay so hooded man theories:

First off I think it's Earth 3 Lex, makes total sense especially when our Lex is the main character of Forever Evil. Also Johns has stated that this will change the dcu and that lex is the one to watch, never mentioned which Lex though.

As far as whose helping him, The obvious choice to me is Deathstorm, since he was hired by an enemy of the CS, which regardless of identity is likely the hooded man, and he was the only other than grid and outsider at their HQ at the time. The other possibilities would be owlman wanting to take down the CS, superwoman or the outsider with their own plan, or even ultraman who didn't want him to die.

idk about superwomans agenda, maybe she told ultraman about owlmans plan as part of his plan? idk.

Also I think the alien being that attacked Earth 3 is Darkseid, makes sense he lives outside the multiverse and destroys worlds. He was a big deal at the beginning of JL and we have yet to see him return. Ultraman then wouldn't want to kill hooded man/ lex because he being the smartest man alive would be the only hope in coming up with a way to keep darkseid away.

Lastly, Where on earth is the new gl chick we were promised from this event? there was even an add with her silhouette. and now nothing no mention of any kind or sort. Whats with that?

I really liked this issue, I enjoyed the back stories for each character.

As for the cover, that annoyed me too. I think the cover should have been a backshot of grid looking a screen with each CS member covered in this issue.

was a good issue but i was hoping for this issue to focus on superwoman as we have already gotten the tales of the other members of the evil trinity but of course not its all about grid (who cares) and the other members dont get individual issues but have their tales all told in one, no respect or too much fan service to the wrong fans. no equality at dc.

still waiting for that superwoman centric issue......

All of the flashbacks were being framed by Grid. All of the data on Superwoman has been deleted. Thus our framing device does not know, therefore we do not know. All will be revealed as we progress through the event though. Most likely, her history is going to be the most important of all.

just throwing this out there but it would be interesting if this superwoman was actually Donna Troy and the hooded man was Wally West, if did right this has the potential to be the most interesting shocker ever. Aside from that I really think its lex and I wanna say they are running from Braniac, but he would be good in their universe so it must be darkside.

why are there so many deleted messages. Also what if the hooded man is Constantine and the creature they fear is blight, evidence does support this.
