Invincible Iron Man #510 - Demon Part 1: The Beast in Me

5

With FEAR ITSELF over and Tony back in the saddle, what new challenges does the man of Iron have to deal with? What happens when someone figures out where that bottle of wine went during the battle against the Serpent?

The Good

Tony bringing Splitlip to an AA meeting and the subsequent internsal dialog was just amazing. Fraction took something that could have just been a broody mess and turned it into something entertaining an relateable. Hearing Tony say "It's enough to stay dry for today, I'll work on staying sober later." was great wordplay.

Seeing Stane, Hammer and Mandarin working together really makes me fear for Tony's well-being in this one, and I can respect a writer that can craft a threatening villain for a hero to face. THe whole "We've just declared war" line was a great one, as the next little while is going to be a rough one for Mr. Stark.

I'm happy that they brought Splitlip back from Asgard, though; I think a bit of mystical flavour will do the book good, and he doesn't seem out of place. Seeing his eyes light up at the technology he's going to be working with definitely will bring some character to the "Stark getting his company back on his feet" storylines.

The Bad

Not much. This is strictly "Tony's story"; the lack of Pepper Potts is very evident, especially with the last two issues of development. I miss her involvement, but I think the decision to omit her wasn't a terrible one: I just hope they'll come back, is all.

The Verdict

"Oh boy. This is gonna get awkward."

That's what I thought when I saw Mandarin's reveal at the end. That's a good thing.

As I said above, the next little while is going to be tough for Tony, and I think that's a good thing. While it may not have seemed like it at the time, the decision to fall off the wagon during FEAR ITSELF was a big deal, and I'm glad that Fraction didn't decide to sweep it under the rug in favour of new adventures.

The whole PR storm that's going to engulf Tony's world is reminiscent of Daredevil's constant fight with the tabloids; I always like to see what happens when superheroes have to deal with the media.

Great issue. Great kick-off to a new story. Pick up this book.
